5 out of 5 eggsWorthy Purchase

Pros: Several years and several hundred successful DVD burns later, the drive finally called it quits. A most excellent quality product, very much worthy of a buy if you are looking for a good, durable portable disc drive.

Cons: A bit noisy and can be somewhat slow with only 1 USB plugged in

Other Thoughts: One of the best tech investments I have made. This drive outlasted two primary internal DVD drives in my computer, and performed far beyond any reasonable expectation for a $40 purchase. The humming it makes and the use of two USB slots is a small price to pay. I am one extremely satisfied customer, and fully intend to purchase another of these.

1 out of 5 eggsSkip for Mac

Pros: * Low cost
* Cable tucks away

Cons: * Very noisy
* no documentation
* Feels very cheap
* OS X DVD player recognized it to set the region but then never worked for movies after.

Other Thoughts: Playing a movie DVD results in the error message "A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]"

There is a way of working around this but it involves a hex editor and modding your DVDplayback framework. Or just using VLC. Either is ridiculous for a supposedly Mac compatible external player.

Manufacturer Response:

sorry for the issues you are having. please shoot me an email so we can troubleshoot. It is possible that your unit is defective and needs to be replaced. You said yours is noisy and is not recognized by your MAC. This dvd player is very quiet and compatible with Mac OS X 10.4-10.7.

thanks
Marco

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, quiet and fit to purpose. Using it on my Mac as a primary burning tool and no real issues to speak of as of yet. Responds quickly and functions just as quickly, if not faster, than my primary optical drive.

Cons: Seems to burn faster when both USBs are plugged in, though I can't say for certain. Also will not eject when using the button when a disk is inserted, requiring you to eject the disk from the desktop. Slightly annoying but not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Plan to use it heavily for burning, so will update if any problems arise.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks.

Pros: It works. Relatively fast, though I have this nagging feeling that being USB vice eSATA or SATA for that matter, slows it down. Still, I don't stare at the progress bar when using DVDs. Design is cool, lights are cool and it survived a trip half-way across the world in checked baggage.

Cons: None really. See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I don't like the super high gloss finish. It scratches and shows fingerprints easily.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: It's design seems nice (the way it holds the usb cord).

Cons: This thing is absolute junk. Wont work unless both USB ports are plugged in, it clams to only need it to BOOST the usb if you don't have enough power. Well it never has enough power. Very Disappointed.

Manufacturer Response:

Stylnchris, sorry that you have to use both cords to get your unit to function (this is for people who are still using USB1.0 or a USB2.0 pot that does not provide 5v of power. This unit is rated to run at 5V which is the spec for USB2.0 ports. in the event that your port does not provide necessary 5v then you should try updating your bios. This normally fixes that issue and allows your port to supply the required 5v. If this does not fix your issue then please contact me so we can trouble shoot more.

thanks

5 out of 5 eggsIt works!

Pros: Inexpensive, compact, and good build quality. Cable management system. Used it for some Linux Asus EEEPC that I had to reload using the recovery disc. Worked fine.

Cons: None
