Other Thoughts: After testing several external Blu-Ray drives that I'm using to backup my movie collection via MakeMKV, I can easily say this one is the best I've found. Most drives these days (as of early 2016) are riplocked, meaning they artificially limit the speed that you can rip commercial movie discs to approximately 2x (the three I tested maxed out between 8.5 M/s to 9.4 M/s). With this drive I am successfully backing up my movies at speeds north of 30 M/s (roughly 8x, which is the speed that all these drives are supposed to be able to achieve with double layer discs).

This drive is substantially bigger than the other drives I tested (and most of what I've seen available). However, for me the size is worth it. I do take the drive back and forth between my office and my house, but I don't travel with it other than that. If you want something small and light for your laptop bag to carry around all the time, this is not the drive for you!

As for price, depending on where you can find it this drive retails between $240 - $260 Canadian right now (it will be less in the US), while the slimmer models generally run from $90 - $120.

Overall I'm thrilled that I found this drive and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is going through the same project that I'm working on (backing up your movie collection). The difference between backing up at 2x and 8x means that instead of taking anywhere from 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours to backup a discs, I can now backup the same discs in 15 to 30 minutes. When you're backing up hundreds of movies this is a huge time saver.

Pros: Nice paperweight.

Cons: Corrupted the driver for my previously functioning dvd-rw drive so now no optical drive is operational.
TurboUSB software failed to install, perhaps that's the culprit.
No software online, not even the same version 1.0 that comes on cd. Beg for mercy if you lose the disc?

Other Thoughts: Will contact Newegg for an RMA if no solution can be found at Buffalo's site.
