3 out of 5 eggsDoes as advertised - big, loud, rumbly

Pros: Rips at a decent speed. Transfers ~ 500 images from CD in about 30 seconds (600 KB/second). Sustained transfer of a single disk image was faster. I... think that's fast? I expected moving the laser around for hundreds of different files to slow things down. Maybe it's quicker for a single, larger file... ?

Cons: Loud. Sounds like my desktop computer's fans when ripping 80 MB of images. Distracting volume that is noticeably higher than my Macbook Pro's old internal drive, which were not quiet.
Shaky. The thing vibrates my desk enough to be annoying.
Big. Nothing "Slim" about it.

Other Thoughts: I original bought an external enclosure for my Macbook Pro's disc drive, replacing it with a second internal SSD. It was VERY quiet within the external enclosure. It unfortunately got lost while moving.

I've owned several Rosewill internal disc drives and external hard drive enclosures over the years. They make solid products that tend to last and I doubt this is the exception. However, for nearly $40 I expected a "Slim" drive to be slim, and I did not expect it to be so slow and so loud in the year 2014. I may replace it yet.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Seems to operate fine once the OS has loaded.

Cons: Crashed whenever I attempted to boot from it. I could not get it to install Windows (which was my primary purpose for purchasing it).

4 out of 5 eggsNice performing drive

Pros: Compact unit, performs well, USB interface surprisingly speedy - great flexible use, excellent construction

Cons: Dual-USB cable is a little awkward - probably a proprietary cable (I haven't looked to replace it).

Other Thoughts: overall - especially for the price - this well constructed unit performs as well as internal drives. I bought it so that I didn't have to have DVD units in all my computers (3). It's been a great buy

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive

Pros: - Works with practically any machine via dual-mode USB
- Easy to set up and use
- Aluminum case is attractive and stands up to light abuse
- Modular cable allows for easier storage / deployment
- Read / Write speeds are fine

Cons: - It could be cheaper?

Other Thoughts: Comes with some standard burning software in case you don't have a more feature-filled suite already. Would have been nice to have BD-ROM reading functionality for the price, but still a good value as is.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice external drive.

Pros: Metal case.
Works like it should.
Seems well built, good fit and finish.

Cons: Not USB 3.

Other Thoughts: This is ideal for an external drive to load an O/S. Only USB 2, but in reality, for a CD or DVD, you don't really need USB 3.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid device

Pros: The body is very well-made, looks like a single piece of milled or extruded aluminum with a backplate and the drive tray serving as the front of the device.
The surface finish is 'brushed' black and looks very nice even after handling.
The activity light is dim enough to ignore if you are playing a movie on it; the drive itself was louder than a 120mm fan but still quiet.
I was able to install Windows from a disk that looks like it lost a sandpaper deathmatch. Should have no problem reading through scuffs, dirt, fingerprints, etc.

Overall, glad I bought it. I would still feel that way if it was another $5.

Cons: May require two open USB ports. This is common to most if not all external burners, just something to be aware of. You can often get away with only one port, but that is not a guarantee.
Included Y-cable is a bit short.

Other Thoughts: It's a solid aluminum external burner with no extra power needed. Get one. Use it for netbooks with no optical drive, plug it into other machines for duplicating backup disks, keep it as a spare in case your main drive dies.

I did not use the bundled software, so I cannot comment on that part of the package. There are many free programs for burning disks and watching movies, so if you don't like what comes with it go check out sourceforge.

This review cannot address reliability, since I've only had it for a week.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat backup drive

Pros: Thin,
Plug and play
Aluminium enclosure

Cons: Can be a littlle noisy when spinning up
USB 2.0

Other Thoughts: I just needed a small footprint backup CD/DVD-RW drive and this looks good and works well.
It is USB 2.0 but this does not affect its speed and it has been working well.
Aluminium keeps cool to touch and is cheap to boot.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great Drive.

Cons: Limited by the speeds of USB, but you know this before you purchase.

Other Thoughts: Great if you have a system that you do not need an optical drive on often.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: Works Ok! I got it for my Asus Ultrabook & since then I've used it on a clients Notebook because they didn't know that the small laptops don't have internal optical drives.

Cons: None! It's a USB external optical drive & it only does a couple of basic things; burn & read discs.

Other Thoughts: I haven't had any problems with any Windows OS recognizing it from Vista - Windows 8.1 32-bit or 64-bit. I think that the negative comments usually come from less experienced & knowledgeable PC people. Those with extensive PC understanding, experience, & knowledge do through research & have the expertize to install almost anything.
