Yes.  It uses the Windows generic CDRom drivers to enable the device.  I bought this for my wife's computer that is running Win 8.1 and she hasn't had an issue when she needed to use it.

On compatibility / support this states a lot of older windows systems. Does it work with windows 8.1?

It should work with any operating system capable of using an external DVD reader/writer.  The system drivers will already be included for Win 2000/XP/7/8.1/10 etc...

(It is basically a notebook CD/DVD reader/writer that has been mounted in an external case with a USB interface)

Will this work with Linux?

I am using the last LT release of Ubuntu, and it recognized, mounted, read and burned DVD's without a hitch. I only used it for data DVD's using the software that came with that distro, so I never used it for burning movies (should be fine) or copying games or other media that use dummy files to prevent copying.

I found that if I turned the burn speed down to '4x' I didn't ever get coasters when burning DL discs, but that may be a limitation of my DVD media, and not this burner.

I want to play CDs & DVDs on my computer, but my Macbook Pro doesn't have a CD/DVD drive. Is this what I need to hook up to my computer? Is this the one you'd recommend?

I would highly recommend this unit for that. I use it both on my macbook and windows pro tablet. You will have to download the latest drivers from rosewill for it to run on your macbook pro.

Not a dumb question at all. It list's everything but that. I bought it hoping it would because it should have the capability to and it does a great job.

It works on an Asus laptop and several desk top PCs, so I would probably inquire into the particular Android you are using to see if special drivers are needed. Check its manual.

Good question. Just popped a mini-CD into it and it reads it just fine.

I honestly don't know, but my guess would be 'yes'. If it were myself with that question I would canvass through all the reviews of the drive on Newegg looking to see if anyone is using it with a mac.
