4 out of 5 eggsGreat player... when it plays.

Pros: The picture and sound from this drive are incredible. I am currently running two 8800GTX's in SLI, connected with a DVI-D cable, and running at 1920x1200 resolution. I also used the burning feature and BD disc to backup my iTunes music and movies with no problems.

Cons: Apparently Twentieth Century Fox decided to use a different format of BD's (BD+) on their movies, and the result was that almost no players could play the discs. This problem arose back in October 2007. By December Samsung and other companies had developed a firmware updates for their players. Despite a firmware update in January 2008, there is no such firmware update for this problem on the Philips drives (SPD7000, SPD9000). Movies that currently don't play: The Day After Tomorrow, Live Free or Die Hard, and Independence Day. I also saw in my research that people were having trouble with Ratatouille and 3:10 to Yuma.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive primarily to watch Blu ray movies, although I do plan on utilizing the burning capacity more down the road. When it is able to play a movie it does so flawlessly. For now, it is slightly frustrating to have movies laying around collecting dust... especially at $35 a pop. Hopefully a firmware update is coming shortly.

5 out of 5 eggsIt Works

Pros: The SATA connections are easy to hook up.

Cons: No tint control knob.

Other Thoughts: Initially, this was the only input for my new computer build. Thankfully, it worked like a dream.

2 out of 5 eggsCannot write Blu-Ray Double Layer!

Pros: It's advertised as capable of writing double layer Blu-Ray discs BD-R DL (50GB), with firmware BPBM.
It writes BD-R/RE single layer just fine.

Cons: I have been unable to burn 50GB BD discs. I have wasted 6 BD-R DL discs trying to get it to work. I have used the two types of DL discs recommended by the firmware documentation, and both failed. I returned the drive to Newegg, and they promptly replaced it with a new one. But the new one is not better.

The software that comes with it (Cyberlink) is not very good. When trying to burn folders that have thousands of files, it takes many hours (yes, hours) for the software to process the files and add them to the project. Other programs I tried will process the same folder in just a few minutes.

Other Thoughts: The firmware documentation lists the supported discs using only the unique identifier written on the disc itself, so it's very hard to figure out which brand and model of discs to buy. You need the free tool DVD Identifier to read the code on the discs to make sure they are supported.
For BD-R DL, these are the brands supported by firmware BPBM:
MEI000T01 = Panasonic LM-BR50DE

5 out of 5 eggsBlueRay is great!

Pros: I bought this burner and really pleased with it. I backed up my data using the free disk it came with it. Its a lot faster than I thought it would be since its only a 2x burner, but its fast enough. Movies are fantastic!

Cons: Only con is the price, but its worth it'

Other Thoughts: Its great if you can afford it. I also have the XBOX-HDDVD player and there is a small difference in picture quality between the HDDVD and BlueRay, BlueRay is smoother and more crisp and will be more future proof due to its higher storage capacity.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive.

Pros: Very pleased with the drive. It has the highest cache I ever seen for the drive because of Blu-Ray. It's really great for backing up servers onto Blu-Ray. It runs smoothly on Windows Server 2008 and Nero 8.0 and backing up onto DVDs are faster than normal because of the cache on the drive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The Dual-Layer Firmware was already installed when I got the drive. I used Nero's Infotool and it says that it has Dual-Layer BD-R.

4 out of 5 eggsSPD7000BD

Pros: SATA is a major plus and the drive has a good look to it. Works very well with my EVGA 8800 GTS 320MB video card in XP and Vista!

Cons: Still waiting on dual layer firmware upgrade and update to play java based blu-ray discs. Needs better software!

Other Thoughts: For the price this will do just as much if not a little more than the more expensive Sony Blu-ray burner out there down the road.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT DRIVE

Pros: The drive worked without a flaw right out of the box, although I did update the firmware. It produces full 1080p runnig blue ray movies. I ran it through several read and wtite procedures with cd, dvd, dldvd.and both dl and sl blue ray disc's and it worked fantastic, its also quiet and a good fit in my Zalman HD160XT HTPC case.

Cons: None other than price still fairly high as well as limited
media thats also high priced. You will need a HDCP video card and monitor, or you could use slysoft anydvdhd decrytor which works on any video card that supports 1080p.

Other Thoughts: Zalman hd160xt htpc case, asus p5wdh motherboard, e6600 cpu, ati hd2900xt graphics card, 2gig patriot ddr800 ram, 2 x fusion hd 5 tunner cards, HTomega 7.1 sound card, philips blue ray drive, 5 x WD 500gig hard drives 2 raid 0, silverstone decathlon 650w power supply. Thanks new egg for the great products and service.
