1 out of 5 eggsgreat short-term drive

Pros: worked great for 1 year

Cons: stopped reading dvds after 1 year of average use

Other Thoughts: this drive is very expensive (3 - 4 x more)compared to others that I have used (that haven't had any problems). you would think that meant it would be better, it's not.

1 out of 5 eggsKeep Searching

Pros: None

Cons: I have owned 2 Plextor CD/DVD burners (PX-176A & PX-716SA). Spent hours trying to get them to function properly. The few times they acknowledge that there’s even a CD or DVD in the tray, usually end up with “power calibration error”. These drives have been tested with 3 different Mobo’s and more “approved” media brands than I care to admit to purchasing. Did they work when I purchased them? Well, sort of, but nowhere near the advertised speed. The cheap XXXX drives I’ve purchased since are faster (in real time performance, not advertised hype performance) and have worked flawlessly regardless of media.

If you like spending hours banging your head against your monitor, playing the “which firmware upgrade will magically transform my overpriced drive into something other than a paperweight”, by all means – buy a Plextor. If you actually want to “use” the drive, then keep looking – there’s nothing to see here.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive

Pros: Delivers high-quality burns time after time. PlexTools allows much fine-tuning.

Cons: Relatively expensive- but worth it.

Other Thoughts: Burned a 100 pack of Verbatim DVD-R 8X media with no coasters! Used GigaRec and VariRec together to make a successful CD over-burn. Used it for reading a marginal disk burned on another drive. Worth the extra money.

5 out of 5 eggsBest of the Best

Pros: Plextools, Firmware upgrades are more often then most other manufacturers. Fast, Power Rec awesome.

Cons: None Great at everything it does.

Other Thoughts: For those posters that said that the drive door is to slow, use the plextools that come with the drive or get it off line "its free" to adjust the speed of the door if its to slow, and adjust your burning burning property's , also you can turn off power rec if you think the drive is to slow, Also for the CYCLE Redundancy errors, it's caused by cheap disk's, all of us owners of plextors through ought the years know, that plextor drives don't tolerate cheap and poorly made media, thats why we go with these drives, Read the Manual and you will find out these drives do so much more then any another on the market, if you use the tools it comes with, and also use good media with it.
For a Fact, Cycle Redundancy Errors are Not Caused By A Drive, It Is Caused By POOR MEDIA.. don't believe ME? Do some Research on it you will be Surprised What you Find Out, Over 820 DVD Burns With This Drive And Not One Problem Or Bad Disk, I allways Use Verbatim Disk's.. The Best MCC Made Media

4 out of 5 eggsWorking fine

Pros: Works just fine, reads DVDs and writes with no problems to date.

Cons: Not with me, but a pattern of misbehavior in previous posts, will monitor this drive for issues.

Other Thoughts: The tray eject is slow, but not buggy, seems just to be "careful" otherwise a decent product.

1 out of 5 eggsIncomplete = garbage

Pros: It works for simple things like burning CDs. Newegg doesn't disappoint on price or shipping speed!

Cons: I have a DVD-R camcorder, and I copy the mini DVDs to my hard drive for editing (my content, legal use!), but this drive can't handle it, and gives a "cyclic redundancy check" error every time, but I can copy these mini DVDs on my old Pioneer with no problem. I've had this drive for 10 months figuring that Plextor would make good with a firmware fix, but I'm updated and it's just as broken as the day I got it, so back it goes. I don't expect the replacement to work based on the horrible feedback for this drive.

Other Thoughts: I have to agree with other negative posters that it's shocking for a company with a great rep to let garbage like this into the market. Depending on how much the RMA shipping is, I might just get a new drive and write off Plextor forever.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Burner

Pros: The burner has worked as every Plextor I have ever owned has... Top notch burning, possibly the best you can buy.

Cons: Tray door opens very slow and appears to lag as it's reaching it's full extension.

Other Thoughts: A faster door tray motor would be worth the extra money for Plextor. Door motor may have some issues with cases that cover the tray with a door.

2 out of 5 eggsAp0stle

Pros: When it was not failing it burned great.

Cons: After about a year of use (and not that much use,) the drive became very sporadic. It would burn about 1 out of 5 tries and would read the disc about 1 out of 10 times of putting the disc in and out. The frustrating thing is that it worked like a few times so I just thought it was maybe a failing motherboard or bad connection. Turns out it was the burner after all.

Other Thoughts: Disappointment.
