5 out of 5 eggsHigh quality burner

Pros: Firewire with pass through makes this a very handy device. Also supports USB. Works on every system plugged in to as expected, Windows, Mac, Solaris x64. Full size burner, not a flimsy laptop drive.

Cons: None for my uses. Wish it came with a firewire cord instead of USB.

2 out of 5 eggsNewer isn't always better

Pros: Plextor name, however good that is any more.

The drive does report writing at the rated speeds, i.e. matching or exceeding the rated speed of the media used.

Cons: Drives fail prior to warranty end. The good is that they can be replaced, but it's not worth it. These seem to be a batch of lemons compared to past Plextor's.

Other Thoughts: The drive has performed fairly consistently over the last 6 months, about one coaster out of every 15-20 DVD+R's. I don't know if it's due to the bundled software or the hardware, but that's what we've been experiencing. We're an enterprise customer and have been using Plextor for years. This is the first time we've experienced problems that seem to be associated with a particular model drive - 810UF's. We've begun migrating to LG drives, mostly due to reliable first-in-class Blue-Ray capabilities.

1 out of 5 eggsWhat happened to Plextor?

Pros: Sturdy case. Solid feel and look.

Cons: I purchased this drive from my company's vendor primarily because I had a very good experience with Plextor PX-716 external and internal drives (I purchased four drives total, three from NewEgg) and I frequently use PlexTools software bundled with the drives to check the disks quality. Well, this drive does not come with PlexTools and it does not work with it beyond basic stuff - all advanced PlexTools functions are not available for this drive. I called Plextor support and was told that this drive uses a different chipset and is not supposed to work with PlexTools. Sounds pretty lame to me - if you can program chipset to burn CD/DVD, then you should be able to program it to read CD/DVD. Still decided to try the drive. Produced four coasters on four attempts (using Nero and Sonic on laptop and desltop), gave up and called vendor to get RMA.

Other Thoughts: I guess I should have read reviews on this site first.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Burner for the $$

Pros: I have purchased 6 of these units over the last year. I have not had one issue with any of them nor any hardware complaints from the folks using this burner. Not every file will burn at 18X, sorry, get over it.

Cons: CD burning software, stinks! Plextor should have included something better, like Nero. This was the only issue with the end user, software unclear at best. I replaced it with Nero and the complaints turned into compliments. I rated this unit 4 because of the Roxio software.

Other Thoughts: Nice that the prices have dropped on this unit. I will continue to buy this model. It is easier for IT technicians when it comes time to upgrading client computers, too. (Just unplug (hot swappable) the burner and reinstall the software)

4 out of 5 eggshey, not junk

Pros: It works fine. I installed (just plug into USB2), and it just worked. It is faster than the 4x DVD burner in my Dell machine. Disks burn correctly. No problems. It has Firewire support, not just USB2.

Cons: I have not seen it reach 18x speed with any of my DVDs. It seems dependent on the system speed of the computer, as burning is slower on my older, slower machine, when I move it there. But I have yet to see any burner go full speed using Roxio software.

Other Thoughts: I don't know why other reviewers are bashing this burner. I owned the previous, 8x Plextor burner. This one is similar, though I confess the quality seems a bit less. It could be slimmer, lower cost (that $130), and have more features, but I wouldn't call it junk.

2 out of 5 eggsNOPE

Pros: Over rated JUNK!! STICK with NEC, SamSung, or Older SONY models, examples 500ul,500ulx,500a,510a and 510ul. PLEXTOR is just JUNK and over rated, Don't be fooled by this junk. Not worth the money for this junky DVD writer..JUNK

Other Thoughts: Plextor is just an over rated piece of garbage that can't compete with and other models these days

2 out of 5 eggsNot a real Plextor

Pros: Nice external case I guess...

Cons: This is some off brand burner, LG perhaps, that Plextor slapped their label on, pitiful, I have bought numerous Plextor drives in the past and now they insult your intelligence with this abominable hardware. Very slow ripping, burns OK.

Other Thoughts: Save your greenbacks, buy another brand if possible, you will not be sorry.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Drive

Pros: Nice case

Cons: Drive would hang while reading any dvd, commercial or -/+ R.

Other Thoughts: I had 2 drives sent to me, one as a defect replacement. Both failed to read disks part way into the operation under WinXP on 2 different laptops. The USB port is at fault. Stay away from this drive. I bought it for the Plextor name but this unit is rebranded junk.
