5 out of 5 eggsPlextor USB Externam BD Combo Drive PX-B310U

Pros: I have used this drive mainly as an external CD/DVD drive for my laptop that the optical drive crapped out on. This drive was comparatively priced to any other external drive plus it had the Blu-ray disc capability, so I opted to purchase this one. I have zero complaints on this drive.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The only thing I don't know how to accomplish (which is by no means the drives fault, hence I did not mark down the review any) is that I cannot play Blu-ray movies on my PC. I understand there is special software that's needed or perhaps an updated video card, but until that time it works for what I need it to work for.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't play BluRay movies

Pros: It can read files?

Cons: Well, I bought this to let the kids watch movies on a laptop while we were traveling without wifi. I know bluray is a dead technology, but we have a box set of Harry Potter and well I need to keep the kids quiet on an 11 hour trip. What you aren't told about this player is that the included software is like 5 years old and doesn't work to show movies. Literally spent an hour trying to get it to work, but just found many other frustrated users that Plextor would bundle non-working software. So I went to plan B and downloaded a trial of one of the newer software packages that normally costs $50, the price of this stupid drive, but luckily I would get 30 days free and that would get me through my trip! It worked, hooray! I packed it up, set off for our 11 hour train ride and wouldn't you know, on the train, set up the player and laptop and the player works for about 3-4 minutes before registering an error and shutting down. You see, when I tested I only watched for 1-2 minutes before I assumed it worked. The whole purpose for this was shot and I felt like I was using windows 95 when using this player. Oh, and it is huge - I would have done better to bring an xbox with us. What a hunk of junk - I have been happy with Plextor in the past, but clearly they are falling behind.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive, PowerDVD 9 is worthless

Pros: Drive is working great to rip my blu-ray and DVD collection to hard drive for Windows Media Center. Simple plug and play operation plus software that makes firmware and settings changes easy. Sale prices tend to be about half of other USB blu-ray drives.

Cons: PowerDVD 9 is worthless for playing commercial blu-ray movies. Probably just hopelessly outdated, but still worthless.

Other Thoughts: Didn't try other parts of the PowerDVD 9 suite. It is a full size external tray load 5.25 optical drive plus required power brick that looks rather nice until it sits next to a slim external slot load optical drive.

2 out of 5 eggsDid not work with XP

Pros: Price...

Cons: Only buy if you have a Blu-Ray enabled computer. Did not work with Windows X P. Software would not load. Lot of noise when it is running.....

3 out of 5 eggsPerfect Hardware, Not Great Software

Pros: Hardware great, looks like it will play whatever it needs to. Works great out of the box as a DVD player.

Cons: Large & bulky, software for playing bluray disks is not included with the player.

Other Thoughts: Overall looks like a solid product, Newegg has great service and shipped to me very quickly (received within 3 days of ordering) with no issues. Item looks like it will do what it says, but just make sure that you are willing to purchase the software that you need if you want to use this as an external Bluray drive as it does not come with the hardware.

1 out of 5 eggsCyberlink Blu Ray software is expired

Pros: None. Blu ray player will play dvd's.

Cons: This product is worthless without blu ray software. Cyberlink continues to put out software which expires. They do not give updates or patches when new security features are added to blu ray discs. Instead, they make Cyberlink PowerDVD8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15, etc. You have to buy the new version for $100. As soon as I installed the supplied plextor software (powerdvd), it told me I had to buy new software! Mine was already outdated. Cyberlink goes on A****n to respond to negative comments like mine, but never answer why they force you to upgrade every year. They get really aggressive and asinine about it. You might as well go buy a new (tv) blu ray player that automatically updates via wifi for free or a used Sony playstation 3 for the price they want for this software. Software is THREE times what I paid for this bluray with a coupon code I got on SlickDeals.

4 out of 5 eggsblu ray beginner

Pros: just received this today and plugged it in with no problems on a macbook air, and played the blu-ray of mongol(great film) using some free player software from apple store.

great first drive for friend or family who needs to play discs once in a while and their laptop has no drive.

sturdy construction. good power/open button. led is a nice blue. transparent stand. included software on a cd. I didn't try the software. don't plan on burning anything at present. I try to avoid using software from included cds. The version are usually old and outdated.

would like to get another for the good promo price of $30

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: kind of bulky to take with you on the go, but hey, it's not for that

1 out of 5 eggsCyberlink Power DVD

Pros: Actual unit is great.

Cons: Cyberlink Power DVD 8 is absolutley the worst and I've been dealing with it for three years.

Other Thoughts: I must rate this as a bad purchase unless you are going to go out and spend another hundred bucks on other software. I have been updating, patching, and reinstalling the software until it drove me to buy a free standing Blu-Ray player. I have other BD Rom players built into computers and they also eventually will not play Blu-Ray's with Cyberlink Power DVD. Cyberlink wants that UPGRADE money.
