2 out of 5 eggsThought they were the best...

Pros: The best specs at the time. PlexUTILITIES something you can't get with other drives.

Cons: Failed. I get Tray In and Spindle Motor errors. I'm not a power burner either, this gets used maybe 2x a month.

Other Thoughts: About half of the time I get coasters and the drive just spins with a solid activity light. You have to power off the PC just to get it to stop - using a paperclip to eject the frisbee doesn't shut it down. It freezes and you're done. I thought Plextor WAS the best out there, and the price reflected it, and when I thought I was getting the top of the line I guess I was mistaken. Back to the sub-20 dollar burners for me.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent burner

Pros: It works

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: It's tough to get excited about a DVD drive/burner these days, since they've pretty much become low cost commodity items. This one has worked well - however, and I have no complaints.

1 out of 5 eggsNot what I expected from Plextor

Pros: Worked good for about a year.

Cons: Now when I try to burn DVD's it keeps giving me a medium error. Thought it was the dvd's I was using but I tried burning with an older lite-on and it burns fine, so it wasn't the dvd's. I must have thrown away 30 dvd's within 2 weeks.

3 out of 5 eggsOK, but not up to normal Plextor standards.

Pros: Purchased in December 2009 for a low-use PC for my father, it worked just fine as a DVD drive; mostly reading with the occasional writing. Bought it because it was a Plextor - the best - and I've been using Plextor since SCSI caddy-based CD-ROM days with zero issues.

Cons: All the drive had to do is sit there in the system and wait for the occasional use... but it wasn't even practical for that.

You see, every time the PC powers on or wakes up from sleep, the drive makes a loud double-grunt noise as it checks for media (it's somewhat quieter if there's media in the drive). This is a common thing for drives to do, usually most noticeable on laptops, but this is the very first desktop drive I've had that actually did this. And it's loud.

For a drive that advertises how quiet it is, this is unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: Did I mention that this grunting noise is LOUD? And annoying? Made me jump every time it did that when I was in the room doing something else for a month? Doesn't seem like such a big deal at first, and it probably doesn't seem like a big deal to you readers, but after more than a year of it doing this multiple times a day, it was just no longer acceptable for its job of sitting there, waiting for the occasional use.

Building a new system for myself, I AVOIDED Plextor because of this annoying drive, and bought an LG 10X BD. It's completely silent at power on. In fact, I liked it so much I noticed that there was a new 12X model available, bought that, and swapped out the 10X in my system and put that in my father's system.

Now his system is completely quiet with no annoying noises in the middle of the night when Windows 7 decides it's going to power on to do something.

4 out of 5 eggsRoxio Creator 10 ce Doesn't Load

Pros: Plextor is Usually… the best product, with the best software.

Cons: Save the Three Bucks and Buy the OEM.
I am Kinda Bumbed…
Roxio Creator 10 ce Doesn't Load.
Tech Support directed me to their user forum/knowledge base, and despite attempts to tweak the operating system, the burner software does not load.
Running XP Pro SP3 with current updates on an AMD system.
Can't use the light scribe.

Other Thoughts: First product review post ever.
Support did not reply to second request for assistance.
Must say I am really disappointed with Plextor.

3 out of 5 eggsWorked for a while

Pros: Looks cool, nice shiny disc tray front, lots of capabilities (like lightscribe and dual layer writing).

Cons: After about a year, it started writing dvds that would skip in all of my dvd players. I first thought it was just a bad copy, but I decided to write the same dvd with this drive and my other asus burner and the asus-burned disc was just fine. It never gave any errors, just wrote dvds that sucked.

Also about a month before this, the disc tray wouldn't open the first time I hit the button, like it was getting jammed. But I could press the open button again and it would open right up. And I never closed it just by shoving it in, I always used the button or eject function in programs.

Other Thoughts: Still works just fine as a cd/dvd reader, but I won't be buying Plextor anymore. My Asus driver is over 2 years old and still works.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: It reads everything I throw into it. Quite and fast

Cons: $40 range is a little much. (didn't knock an egg b/c I got it for less)

Other Thoughts: Bought it for a new build, it worked right away. Haven't had any problems since.

I bought it at $30. Not sure it I would pay $40 for it
