1 out of 5 eggsHorrible

Pros: It is a disc drive....

Cons: this product reads a normal CD-R at only 8x...(supposed to be 48x...)
It stops reading discs randomly...

Other Thoughts: Simply do not buy...

Buyer Beware.

1 out of 5 eggsPlextor 870A

Pros: Nice looking

Cons: Windows Vista didn't recognize it, but it's in the BIOS at start up. Changed cables, tried everything, but nothing works. Looks like a dead unit was shipped.

3 out of 5 eggsok drive for the price

Pros: working ok but not without some effort.

Cons: Flimsy compared to 708A (and that's saying a lot!) 708A had external headphone port micro but this one does not. But LightScribe feature may make up for it (haven't tried it yet)
Had to do more work than expected to bring it on line. Installer did not assign a drive letter - had to manually do this, a real pain. Some applications (convertxtodvd) had problems initially writing to the drive but eventually was able to reload drivers to correct this.

Other Thoughts: Got this in preparation for upgrading to Win 7 x64 (my Plextor 708A apparently not compatible with Win 7 x64) 708A was a real work horse, hope this one also lasts.

5 out of 5 eggsBest IDE DVD burner with Lightscribe

Pros: 1) It works with most cases - only not in those cases where the drive has to be installed from the back, or front bezel may foul its opening. (2) Most robust CD/DVD tray with smooth classy mechanism. (3) Longest lasting drives - I have used more than a dozen Plextors - the oldest more than 6 years old are still working in dusty environment. (4) Has in-built cooling fan which turns on after some activity.

Cons: (1) Fan is quite loud - not recommended in cases without noise dampeners - cases with front lid help to reduce the noise. (2) OEM version does not come with any CDs or screws - so you will need to get separate DVD-burning software with lightscribe support - screws which come with case will work just fine. (3) Tray is full-width upto the edges - might foul with some cases. (4) Costlier than other brands - but that is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: Plextor has maintained its drive quality throughout the period I have been buying/using them. This is Plextor's first Lightscribe drive. They have only black bezels now - beige/silver bezels are not supplied even in retail versions - you can use in only black cases.

1 out of 5 eggsA very poor cosmetic decision

Pros: It works fine as a drive - just won't work with most cases

Cons: Look closely at the front view picture of the Drive. Plextor has decided to make the front plate on their drive full width and shiny. While this is pretty, if your case has a recessed drive bay, you will probably have interference problem, preventing the drive from opening and closing normally. Dell Vostro, HP DC5000, dc700, dx7500, and numerous IBM Small form factor cases all have this problem. It can be overcome by slightly filing the front plate, or in some cases bt shimming the drive in one direction or another, but why?

4 out of 5 eggsExpected better from Plextor

Pros: Fast, came w/ utilities disc.

Cons: Mine has had trouble reading DVD-R's recorded on other burners. Tray is flimsy compared to older drives.

Other Thoughts: You can see the effects of cost cutting -- drvies these days look and feel cheaper.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fit in my Lian-Li case with no problems.

Cons: Does not recognize Taiyo Udin TY Go2 dics(all that I use).No Firmware updates.
Not actually made by Plextor.

Other Thoughts: After trying 4 discs.2 blank,2 pre-recorded,with no success in the unit being able to recognize them. The unit made an awful racket. After I pulled it from my case,I noticed the top of the housing had started to come off. This unit is very cheaply made and is not a REAL Plextor. It's made by another manufacturer.
Highly disappointed.
I've bought over 50 Plextor PX708 and 716 units 4 years ago.They have been perfect.This 1 is a piece of junk.Don't touch it.

5 out of 5 eggsThis drive FITS, pure and simple.

Pros: Plextor makes fantastic drives and I was lucky to find this one as a replacement for a repair job I was doing. It went into a Compaq Presario SR1913WM, which has those funky external doors on the case that Compaq/HP loves to put on their trims. You know, the kind where you press the button, the door flips down, and the tray for your optical drive slides out? Yeah, pure window dressing, but it was something I had to take into consideration when buying this particular Plextor, since a previous review stated that its build prevented it from fitting into their case correctly.

I am happy to report that I had ZERO problems with fitting this drive into the Compaq Presario SR1913WM case. Even with the proprietary case doors, it still fit wonderfully and never gave a single problem.

The operation of the drive is smooth and burns discs without so much as a hiccup. Delivery was to me in three days, which was completely expected. I can ALWAYS depend upon Plextor and Newegg!

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: Don't worry about the drama of whether or not it will fit. Unless you have some sort of weird, custom mod, with huge, overlaying trim, it'll be fine.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, fast drive

Pros: As with other Plextor drives I own it is quiet with exceptional performance.

Cons: Media tray width.

Other Thoughts: If your case requires removal of the front bezel for drive removal or if you cannot see complete front of your present drive the width of the media tray on this drive will require case modification.
