3 out of 5 eggsDecent dvd drive

Pros: I've had this drive in my build for over 5 years. Still working for the most part.

Cons: Last six months it has developed some kind of bug. The door wont open on the first try unless there is a disk in the drive. Other than that, you have to continue to press the eject button countless times until it opens. but it does open.

2 out of 5 eggsI hate this thing

Pros: It works fine when it does.

Cons: I don't know what happens, but this thing will just plain not work sometimes. I put the disc in, the light goes on and I ca hear the noise of it spinning but nothing after that. I've looked at it under "computer" and it's there and shows that it has a disc in it but I doesn't act like it does. Clicking on it brings up the message "please insert disc" it then opens up with the disc I've already put in.

The only solution has been to go under remove programs and uninstall the driver, restart, have it re download and install the driver, and restart again. This happens everytime I turn my computer off, it's like the driver goes bad or something. I gave it 2 eggs instead of one because when it does work, it works fine but it's far too inconvenient

Other Thoughts: I don't know whats wrong with it. If I could go back in time, I would not have bought this.

5 out of 5 eggsFeel the BURN

Pros: Very versatile.
Burns most forms of media including Duel-Layered DVDs.

Cons: May have issues when updating firmware.

Other Thoughts: Had some problems when updating the firmware using Plextor's update utility. However, still functioned as it should, didn't brick it; and therefore, I can't take away any eggs. Have had this for over a year and still runs like a champ.

Pros: Works great. No issues thus far. Owned for just under a year. Ended up buying a second one so I could have two burning drives.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat while it lasted

Pros: Still can read disks. Used to be able to burn disks with no coasters.

Cons: Burning ability died right at the year mark. I did not give this drive heavy use, so I am really disappointed.

Other Thoughts: If I buy a cheap drive, I go in knowing I am taking a risk with it going bad, but I expected a Plextor product to give me more than a year.

3 out of 5 eggsgreat except for not being able to eject :-/

Pros: Lightscribe, read speed, reads DVD's other dvd/cd rom drives won't read.

Cons: The unit has stopped ejecting properly. In the last 2 or 3 months my unit won't eject, so I've resorted to using a paperclip to give it help. Not good.

Other Thoughts: I'm normally a big plextor fan, this is the first drive I've bought from them that hasn't worked flawlessly. And it used to open ok. Not sure if I'm out of the warranty period though, plus dealing with the hassle of replacing doesn't sound fun. Funny, except for this MAJOR issue that developed in the last few months, I would recommend the drive.

2 out of 5 eggsLightscribe part of this drive is garbage.

Pros: Burns CD & DVD's (including DL DVD's) without a problem.

Cons: The lightscribe part of this drive is a complete failure. I use Surething for all of my labels, and I have it set at maximum darkness. I also have the application running so I get maximum darkness.

This drive started having a problem with the occasional botched lightscribe job (unreadable/warped lightscribe printings). The print was normally too light even with both programs set at max darkness. Lighter than any other lightscribe I've ever owned. So, I decided to upgrade the firmware, thinking this would solve the problems. I've only burned a few discs with the new firmware, but the lightscribe has become even lighter. It hasn't had any print jobs that messed up, but the fact that I can now hardly read the print it burns is upsetting.

Other Thoughts: If you don't want this drive for the lightscribe, by all means, purchase it. If you are heavily into lightscribe, then I suggest buying a different burner.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Junk

Pros: It's relatively quick and quiet... when it works.

Cons: My primary use is as a CD ripper (using dBPowerAmp with AccurateRip). This drive is a tremendous letdown. Sure, it works just fine 90% of the time but it's for the other 10% that you pay the premium for a Plextor. My generic laptop drive does 100x better at reading through troublesome CDs. Heck, sometimes the Plextor doesn't even recognize the disc. What a waste of money.

Other Thoughts: Last Plextor I ever buy. They've lost their edge.
