4 out of 5 eggsAnother Writer

Pros: After several burns, it hasn't made any coasters. But it's only been installed for a week so take that for what it's worth. Fortunately, with a Newegg coupon I got it for only a few bucks more than the more plebian DVD writers.

Cons: Like all writers nowadays it's a featherweight, weighing in at one third of the six year old Plextor IDE writer it replaced. Not exactly confidence inspiring for a writer that bills itself as "duplication grade." It's outward appearance, construction and heft is no different than the numerous Samsung, LG, ASUS writers I've purchased from Newegg in recent years. Of course I haven't opened it up to compare with my other writers, but I have this feeling that it came out of the same two or three factories in China that all the others come from (like one of the other reviewers posted).

Other Thoughts: And what is duplication grade, anyway? Well, if you look on Plextor's website, the only reference is the writer is "designed with a duplication grade controller." Ah, that explains everything; I feel better now. And I'm quite confident I can hear better sound and more bits from the music CDs I've "duplicated" so far.

I'd come back in a year and update this review after I know how long the device lasts, but seldom does a particular model writer of any brand stay in a manufacturer's catalog that long. I suspect like all other brands of writers you hope to get lucky and have one stand the test of time, but the reality is they are a throw-away item no matter how much you spend.

5 out of 5 eggsPerforms great as CD ripper

Pros: Reads and writes CDs and DVDs as expected
CD extraction with C2 error correction

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased this after discovering I couldn't bring my old IDE Plextor over to my new PC build. I was looking for something to use specifically to rip CDs with EAC and there's very little documentation around for newer drives as to exactly what error correction is supported. Based on my research I went with this drive even though it cost a bit more than most OEM drives. I'm happy I did - it rips CDs great and has the built-in error correction EAC uses to produce 'perfect' rips.

Highly recommended drive for anyone looking to accurately rip CDs. And, of course, it does everything else you need very well too.

5 out of 5 eggsBurns DVDs well, no coasters.

Pros: Good quality burns. Has not made a coaster on me yet (my LG burner produces 50%+ coasters).

Cons: Not sure. Perhaps could be quieter, but really this drive is pretty good for 30 bucks.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I expected

Pros: Reasonably priced, solid performance for digital audio extraction (aka ripping).

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Plextors have been the finest drives I've owned over the years. I purchased this one to augment my selection of optical drives, and it consistently matches the check-sums provided by the accuraterip database.

1 out of 5 eggsI Feel Cheated

Pros: Well, it's a functional DVD-RW. Nothing appears wrong with it. See below for why I'm not pleased.

Cons: I paid more for this than I should have. It cost ten bucks more than an IDENTICAL drive carrying the ASUS brand. That's right. This drive is absolutely, in every detail, IDENTICAL to the currently-most-popular ASUS drive selling on Newegg with the same specs.

Other Thoughts: I bought one of this and the ASUS drive at the same time, ironically, so that if I had any compatibility issues on a critically important system, I could fall back on the second drive. I knew Plextor to be a very reliable brand in the past, and so willingly paid 50% more for their drive. I was SHOCKED to find they are utterly the same. I dismantled them to confirm absolutely. Nothing about the two drives is physically different except the front panel and the stickers on the underside. They were obviously manufactured in the same facility of the same components; even the QC marks and internal tracking QRs inside the assemblies are THE same.

I have no idea whom to be angrier with; ASUS or Plextor. Wait, yes I do. Plextor charges more for the exact same product.

So did ASUS make the drive for Plextor to brand as its own? Vice versa? Did both buy from the same third-party generic manufacturer? I have no idea.

But if you're buying this product you may as well go with the cheaper one...

5 out of 5 eggsAlready Own TWO

Pros: Best DVD Burner on the market this year. Lets face it DVD burners are going the way of the Dinosaur. Fewer offerings than ever this year. The last 4 drives I have had fail have failed due to tray failure. So the fact that this drive addresses this is reason to rejoice in itself. And you can tell when you see and feel this tray in operation that it is something special. SOLID AS A ROCK!!! And that is just the beginning because this drive is also VERY quiet. Burns DL DVDs without a hitch... Zero Coasters... Well worth the extra $10.. You get bad drives with ANY manufacturer from ANY seller.. I find the reviewer who says they got two bad drives from Newegg so never again" Chances are they would never see another bad drive from Newegg because that is how the law of averages works.. ;~) I will review a new one again because I just bought another to put in my FW external case...

Cons: None So Far.

5 out of 5 eggsNormal Plextor quality

Pros: All good.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Plextor has been my choice for burners for over 10 years. They never let me down and produce very few coasters. I have some that are over 10 years old and still working just fine.

1 out of 5 eggsPLEXTOR Duplication Grade DVD CD Burner Drive

Pros: Worked fine for 2 weeks.

Cons: After 2 weeks the burnt DVDs, would flicker. Definitely would not recommend anyone buying one. This is the second burner I have bought from Newegg. I will NOT buy from them again!
