3 out of 5 eggsWorked great for 2 yrs

Pros: Fast, handles most DVD RW CD RW

Cons: Not the quality I had expected from Plextor

Other Thoughts: My first CD burner was a Plextor. That was way back when they used a caddy. That drive performed perfectly for nearly 10 years. Figuring that Plextor was still a good name, I purchased the Plextor Duplication Grade DVD/CD SATA Burner Drive PX-891SAW-OEM.
It worked well for 2 years, but now the eject button on the front does not work too well. I need to press it really hard, and in a certain spot to eject the disk. I opened up the drive to see what I could do, and was dismayed at the low quality - thin plastics that they are using today. Not a shadow of the old Plextor. But I guess for under $30, what was I to expect.
I may be looking for a blue-ray drive soon, but not sure I will go with another Plextor.

It is very disturbing to find that almost everything is made only to satisfy the price, and not quality. So we're throwing all this plastic out into the landfills every year. It's a shame.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than the Alleged Asus Clone

Pros: Fast and very quiet.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: It is interesting to see the claims made here that this drive is identical to the Asus. I just replaced my Asus with this drive. The Asus was horribly noisy and the noise level varied considerably from burn to burn. This drive is very quiet. Read all the many reviews on the Asus saying that it is noisy. Then look at the reviews on this dirve.

5 out of 5 eggsRegarding Keith L post

Pros: I have the Asus version of this drive, and can rate it 5 stars based on its performance:

Excellent price
Reads scratched discs well (error correction)
Classic bezel design

Cons: Is price $5 more than the Asus model, which is identical.

Other Thoughts: Keith L seems to think he knows more than he actually does. While his analysis of copying digital data is partially true, he has forgotten or simply doesn't know about two important factors when coping this type of data.

Have you ever wondered why some programs, specifically CD audio ripping programs, recommend copying at a lower speed? Error correction.

This is an inherent feature of the drives firmware and the quality\condition of the laser. A good firmware will have efficient error correction and isolation\retry arithmetic. THIS COULD BE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ASUS AND PLEXTOR MODEL. I don't know if it is, but if a reviewer wrote he believes one model produced better results than the other, this could be why.

5 out of 5 eggsI woder if it will last???

Pros: I fit is made by the same company as my old Plextor CD Writer, it will be the last one I ever buy.

Cons: None - I hope this one is as reliable as mt old CD writer is.

Other Thoughts: I really do not know how this company (or whoever makes these drives) stays in business. I also have a Plextor CD Writer that I have had for more than 15 years and it is still going strong after literally hundreds of burns. :)

1 out of 5 eggsResponse to tom g

Pros: Reviewer probably didn't know he was posting misleading info.

Cons: However, tom g cannot be correct in his claim that ripped audio from the Plextor version of this drive is any different from that from the ASUS version of this drive.

Other Thoughts: As I mention in an earlier review, this product and the currently most-popular ASUS drive are absolutely identical and were made by the same manufacturer.

I hail from the electronics manufacturing industry. I know whereof I speak. I dismantled both drives and can confirm the fact absolutely.

I also know how CDs work.

CD audio is essentially digital data comparable to an uncompressed WAV file. Any and all CD or DVD readers will retrieve absolutely THE same data when reading the same disk, absent serious read errors.

Conversions CAN vary. If CD data is ripped to a 320kbps MP3 file, it will sound better than a 128kbps MP3 that derives from the same audio data. MP3 also has more than one encoding scheme and various softwares exist that implement the standards in slightly different ways. Also there are other audio formats such as AAC, etc.

BUT. All else being the same, it is patently impossible that one optical drive would produce an "improvement in sound quality" over another where ripped CD audio is concerned. The digital audio data obtained from a given CD disk is always identical regardless what drive or computer is reading the disk.
