5 out of 5 eggsI woder if it will last???

Pros: I fit is made by the same company as my old Plextor CD Writer, it will be the last one I ever buy.

Cons: None - I hope this one is as reliable as mt old CD writer is.

Other Thoughts: I really do not know how this company (or whoever makes these drives) stays in business. I also have a Plextor CD Writer that I have had for more than 15 years and it is still going strong after literally hundreds of burns. :)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent ! ! !

Pros: Sweet drive reminiscent of the old Sony's of 10 years ago. Quiet. Does it's job. Will burn anything I put into it. More that what I expected.

Cons: None. Super drive.

1 out of 5 eggsResponse to tom g

Pros: Reviewer probably didn't know he was posting misleading info.

Cons: However, tom g cannot be correct in his claim that ripped audio from the Plextor version of this drive is any different from that from the ASUS version of this drive.

Other Thoughts: As I mention in an earlier review, this product and the currently most-popular ASUS drive are absolutely identical and were made by the same manufacturer.

I hail from the electronics manufacturing industry. I know whereof I speak. I dismantled both drives and can confirm the fact absolutely.

I also know how CDs work.

CD audio is essentially digital data comparable to an uncompressed WAV file. Any and all CD or DVD readers will retrieve absolutely THE same data when reading the same disk, absent serious read errors.

Conversions CAN vary. If CD data is ripped to a 320kbps MP3 file, it will sound better than a 128kbps MP3 that derives from the same audio data. MP3 also has more than one encoding scheme and various softwares exist that implement the standards in slightly different ways. Also there are other audio formats such as AAC, etc.

BUT. All else being the same, it is patently impossible that one optical drive would produce an "improvement in sound quality" over another where ripped CD audio is concerned. The digital audio data obtained from a given CD disk is always identical regardless what drive or computer is reading the disk.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent cd ripper

Pros: I've tried several DVD drives for ripping cd's to my server and this is by far the very best sounding one. I've even had the ASUS one reviewer claims is the same. Not so with sound. I use rimhillex to slow it to 4X and freinds easily can tell the improvement in sound quality. I bought another.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsAnother Writer

Pros: After several burns, it hasn't made any coasters. But it's only been installed for a week so take that for what it's worth. Fortunately, with a Newegg coupon I got it for only a few bucks more than the more plebian DVD writers.

Cons: Like all writers nowadays it's a featherweight, weighing in at one third of the six year old Plextor IDE writer it replaced. Not exactly confidence inspiring for a writer that bills itself as "duplication grade." It's outward appearance, construction and heft is no different than the numerous Samsung, LG, ASUS writers I've purchased from Newegg in recent years. Of course I haven't opened it up to compare with my other writers, but I have this feeling that it came out of the same two or three factories in China that all the others come from (like one of the other reviewers posted).

Other Thoughts: And what is duplication grade, anyway? Well, if you look on Plextor's website, the only reference is the writer is "designed with a duplication grade controller." Ah, that explains everything; I feel better now. And I'm quite confident I can hear better sound and more bits from the music CDs I've "duplicated" so far.

I'd come back in a year and update this review after I know how long the device lasts, but seldom does a particular model writer of any brand stay in a manufacturer's catalog that long. I suspect like all other brands of writers you hope to get lucky and have one stand the test of time, but the reality is they are a throw-away item no matter how much you spend.

5 out of 5 eggsPerforms great as CD ripper

Pros: Reads and writes CDs and DVDs as expected
CD extraction with C2 error correction

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased this after discovering I couldn't bring my old IDE Plextor over to my new PC build. I was looking for something to use specifically to rip CDs with EAC and there's very little documentation around for newer drives as to exactly what error correction is supported. Based on my research I went with this drive even though it cost a bit more than most OEM drives. I'm happy I did - it rips CDs great and has the built-in error correction EAC uses to produce 'perfect' rips.

Highly recommended drive for anyone looking to accurately rip CDs. And, of course, it does everything else you need very well too.
