5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Aluminum construction; feels solid. Quiet. Easy Installation.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Installation was very easy. The only slight glitch was that my PC wouldn't recognize the hardware when I connected it to a USB 3.0 port. I rebooted, my PC saw the drive and loaded the drivers. Now it works great.

To those who have complained about fan noise, either I got lucky and I have a super quiet unit or you guys have a very low tolerance for fan noise. Even with then fan running, I don't even notice it.

4 out of 5 eggsGets the job done, fast and robust

Pros: Well engineered unit, mostly extruded aluminum.
USB 3.0 comes in handy for BD data quantities.
Uses standard IEC power cord, not an outboard supply.

Cons: Uses oddball USB 3.0 A-A cable, would have preferred a standard A-B cable as used on my USB 3.0 HDD dock.
Fit and finish are OK when assembled correctly but the thick plastic covers used over PCBs and contacts make this difficult.
The power switch on the back of mine has absolutely no function; my enclosure is always on regardless of switch position. At least it failed in the right way, since it functions correctly I don't plan to pursue RMA, but docking an egg all the same.

Other Thoughts: I had a compact BD burner powered via USB 2.0 port. Mine died after relatively light use and I suspect this was due to power limitations. Assembled my own replacement with this enclosure and a standard 5.25" desktop BD burner. This assembly is MUCH faster than my old drive and I hope it lasts a lot longer.

This one is too big to fit in my laptop bag, but at least the package box is big enough to hold the assembled drive, and has a nice handle to boot.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product for a laptop

Pros: Purchased my first touch screen laptop. However, never came with a media drive. I needed a bluray burner. Purchased this external enclose to pull my bluray burner out of my old desktop. Super easy to do, made out of metal. Very durable and tough, but still light. Love it!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised.

Pros: Does actually operate at USB 3.0 speeds
Solid design
Everything fits correctly
Somewhat attractive enclosure, certainly not a work of art

Cons: Paint scratches pretty easily
Blue light looks dumb and is really bright

5 out of 5 eggsOptical Burner

Pros: The device is well made and it was easy to install my Sata Blue Ray Burner. No software is required, and the read write speeds are great with the USB 3 interface.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected

Pros: Unit is substantial and not cheap. Unit is made of aluminum and has a separate on/off switch on the back of the unit. The optical drive slides in tightly and fits well. The power cord has a standard wall plug.... no brick.

Cons: Nothing negative to report.

Other Thoughts: Unit was purchased to open up a bay for a storage drive and is living up to expectations.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly..... But!

Pros: Very robust unit extruded aluminum shell will finished.. Since I'm used to noisy computer operations some of the complaints dealing with the fan I hardly notice..All the connecting cords are very good quality though I wished that the 3.0 cord had been color-coded.

Cons: So let's make a list!
Cheap on parts!...... There are eight mounting holes in the unit to securely mount the DVD player to the unit problem is.... Only four screws!
Rubber feet....... If you are laying this unit flat on a table, no problem you have rubber feet to keep it from moving and level. But once again it comes down to being cheap, stand it on its edge there's nothing but bare metal In which case doesn't even sit square on the table..
Poor fitment...... This unit slides together, to finish up the assembly you mount a plastic back plate and screw everything together. Problem was nothing fit quite right! Discovered that the case(outer shell)Slightly warped, making a flush fitment of the plastic back plate impossible! There are some mounting seams on the back plate, I wound up with a razor box cutter slicing and dicing in small amounts to make the back plate fit. VANTEC....... where is your quality control!

Other Thoughts: You know if I didn't need this unit so desperately and the fact that there are not that many manufactures making external enclosures for CD/DVD units I sure would have sent this unit back! I definitely have to give Vantec Credit For using heavy-duty materials but little else.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly

Pros: Great build quality, worked perfectly with my Pioneer Blue Ray Drive, USB 3.0, plugged it in and it worked with Macbook Pro Retina, no hassles.

Cons: Loud fan

Other Thoughts: The fan is noisy but not deafeningly so, louder than my laptop fans though.

4 out of 5 eggsNoisy fan

Pros: Update to my earlier review.

Cons: Like the other reviewer said, the fan is loud. I didn't notice it before because I was using it in a no-so-quiet business setting. It has a thermal sensor and starts up a little bit after you turn it on. I ended up just disconnecting the fan. Neither the HDD or power supply gets more than warm. I'm not worried about it.

Doesn't come with any kind of blank for the hole in the front. I know that most people will use this with an optical drive but I'm not. I have a shock mounted 3.5" HDD holder that required a 5.25" enclosure.

Other Thoughts: I still love the use of a regular IEC power cord. Not having a stupid wall wart is awesome.

Discovered that there is a spot to solder an eSATA connector on the controller board. That'd make this enclosure even better.

4 out of 5 eggsFast and Loud

Pros: The body enclosure is made of aluminum and other metals. Design makes it easy to install the drive you want to use in the enclosure. Standard power cable is the same that is used for desktop PC power supplies. USB 3.0 speed are very fast.

Cons: Fan is very loud. I also own the model that has eSATA/USB, and that model is very quiet. To compare, this enclosure is 3 times as loud.

The USB 3.0 A-A cable is around 3 feet long, and makes it too short for my tastes. I am also disappointed the manufacturer went with A-A. The problem is the A-A is very difficult to find a replacement for. If they chose A-B, I could use my USB 2.0 printer cable to connect. If they used A-micro B or mini B, I could use my cellphone cable to connect the enclosure to the PC. USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 but very few devices uses A-A.

Because of the metals used in construction, this case is very heavy. With a Blu-Ray drive installed, it is around 4-5 pounds.

Other Thoughts: The packing box is very high quality and you can use it to carry around the enclosure after you have installed the drive.
