Great Value
- Pros: First page printing is quick--around 15-20 seconds from turning it on to printing. PPM is quick, quality is way better than any inkjet you'll find for the price. It's a great value, and HP reliability to boot. Does envelopes well, too.
- Cons: All laser toner tends to be expensive, but this toner is more reasonable than most. A great value.
- Other Thoughts: I work with half a dozen different laser printers with work, and I must admit this one performs as well if not better than some professional office machines we have that cost 5X as much. The first page is certainly quicker. If you're looking for a reasonable printer, skip the inkjet and go straight to this laser. Quit reading reviews and just buy it. It is a good bang for the buck and you won't be disappointed.
It fit my needs perfectly.
- Pros: I don't print that often, but when I do print I usually print hundreds of pages at a time. My main printing needs are for manuals and schematics. I also have no need for color.
I wanted a simple personal printer for these needs. Inkjets dry up too quickly when not in use. A simple monochrome laser printer was definetly the way to go and the HP LJ1020 was the perfect solution.
This would likewise be an excellent printer for students.
- Cons: A potential major issue for some users: It should be noted that this printer is a USB "Win"-printer. That is, it relies on your computer's resources to do most of it work. As such, it can't standalone. However the resources that is does consume from the computer is light. In fact, I have one of my HP-LJ1020's connected to an older dual-P3 and even on that machine the overhead is light enough that it is basically transparent.
GNU/Linux users will, no doubt, instantly alarmed by this being a "Win"-printer, however it can be made to work just fine with Linux using the foo2zjs drivers.
Not a major issue: The tray doesn't hold that much paper, so if you do a lot of extensive printing (i.e., manuals), you will be frequently re-filling paper.
- Other Thoughts: As quite a number of other user reviewers have noted, the printer does not come with an USB cable.
However, the HP-LJ1020 doesn't require a special proprietary USB cable. It uses a standard USB cable with the end connecting to the printer being simply just a standard USB Type-B female connector.
It is likely that you may already have a USB cable in a drawer somewhere that you can use with the HP-LJ1020. If not, you don't need to spend much on these cables. They can even be found in Walmart for four bucks.

Excellent Mono Laser
- Pros: Quick crisp printing at an extremely good price. None of the ususal HP bloatware installs OOB.
- Cons: No USB printer cable included
- Other Thoughts: I purchased this for my home office, which I'd describe as moderately heavy use. I've had no problems.
- Pros: This printer is great for a small home office. It is simple, quiet and fast to use.
- Cons: None.
Awesome Printer
- Pros: Great printer for college - I print papers and reports weekly and haven't changed the toner yet.
- Cons: The replacement toner is almost as much as the printer, but this printer comes with one pre-installed.
- Other Thoughts: Very good printer.
