2 out of 5 eggsNot impressive

Pros: Good quality printouts if you have the time to wait for them. It also makes a great paperweight if you have room for it on your desk. If anyone ever walks into your office with a gun, you could take cover behind this printer and be completely safe.

Cons: Since it only can print one color at a time, the print speed is horrendously slow. Four pages per minute, if you're lucky. Printing 400 1 page, 2-sided newsletters takes almost an entire work day. No joke. It frequently balks when sending large jobs to the printer (about 4 MB is considered large for this printer)...says it doesn't have enough memory to complete the operation. It is also very, very noisy. It even periodically rotates the toner, which is also noisy. It is also very large, if you didn't pick up on that already.

Other Thoughts: After only six months of use, I've now replaced this printer with a Brother HL-4040CN color laser. The Brother is easily 5 to 10 times faster than this HP. The same set of newsletters takes less than 30 minutes on the Brother. I'm not kidding. The Brother is also a third the size of the HP. I got the entire Brother printer with cartridges for less than it costs to purchase just the replacement cartridges for the HP.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Multi-Function Printer

Pros: None

Cons: Everything

Other Thoughts: The HP 2840 arrived and once it was installed starting making electrical buzzing sounds every so often. The color printing is slow and the scanner even slower...when it works. Ran into issues about a month ago with "Scanner Error 6" which basically turns it into a huge paperweight. You cannot by-pass and cannot print or copy until this is fixed. Unfortunately, HP's answer "Turn it off, then turn it back on"...yeah, that works wonders. DO NOT get this model, but if you don't believe my horror story and have to have it, save yourself a few headaches and get an extended warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsNon functional network printer

Pros: Good color/bw print quality

Cons: Network functions dont work. (Both in XP and Vista)
Page counting toner supplies. 1 character = 1 page.
Non exising product support.
No duplexing.

Other Thoughts: We got this printer 1 year ago, drivers for vista took forever to be available.
Drivers are big and bulky and take 40 - 50min to install per machine.
Network scanning feature doesn't work in neither Windows XP or Vista clients. (We have 20+computers and tried turning on/off firewalls etc)
Print quality is very good both in BW and color, but slow. The printer wastes a lot of toner and drum. The supplies count pages and when the count is up you have no printer. Even a single character counts as 1 page.
HP support only shipped a CD with drivers and after not being able to solve the problems, ignored any other request. We replaced the printer with a Brother MFC series and all users are happy.

Buyer beware, this printer is no good.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Printer for a Great Price

Pros: I'm not sure where all the negative reviews come from. This printer has been nothing but a pleasure so far. I've run it through its paces and used every feature, everything works flawlessly. Scanning, copying, printing, faxing, etc. The latest drivers for Windows XP allow me to use all the features over the network (no USB cable connected). And best of all, it's fully supported under Linux! I can use all the features right from openSUSE 10.3 without any problems. And the best part is, this was an open box special!!!

Cons: It's really LOUD! I can't really use it while people are sleeping, everyone in the house can hear it. Especially when the toner cartridges rotate.

Other Thoughts: It was the same price to buy this printer (open box special) as it was to buy all new toner cartridges for my 2600n. I was concerned about the future toner costs, but these cartridges last a loooong time, and Rosewill has started making compatible toner cartridges that cost a lot less than the overpriced HP replacements. I'm looking forward to trying those.

1 out of 5 eggsUseless printer/fax/scan

Pros: Are there any? Printing works, that's about it. I'm afraid to even try any large complex printouts as nothing else works properly (fax, scan, copy).

Cons: Faxing only works once after power-up. After that, faxing will either cause the printer to reboot, or it will hang in an endless "Storing Fax" stage.

NO Mac OSX Leopard support for fax/scan!!! Only printing works.

Other Thoughts: I've updated the firmware to the latest 20070524, and still have the problems.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware –high maintenance

Pros: it CAN scan across the network (another review says it can't), stores faxes until it can print them up, can see the status of the device remotely via html.

Cons: have to constantly do little fixes to it- if you make a legal copy and don't specify paper type then it will jam; if any cartridges are "out of ink" then you can't print/scan/fax/copy-it becomes completely useless until you get a new cartridge. If the device is doing anything and you press a button it gives a loud annoying beep (it can't multi task, even though it has multiple functions). It has an issue with "MAGENTA CARTRIDGE MISSING"- just search for that on HP forums if you're still considering buying this.

Other Thoughts: GET A WARRENTEE!!!! If your really going to get this then a 2-3yr warrentee is a must or you just throwing away cash.

to scan across network you have to have a machine running with the full software suite setup on it and tell that machine where it can "scan to", the scan-to will show up on the options on the scanner. It doesn't need to be connected via usb to do that-hence- it can scan "across the network". But it constantly has errors and you'll need to restart the computer and printer about once a day. (application has memory leaks)

4 out of 5 eggsGood, cheap, network scanning

Pros: Inexpensive, good quality color and black/white. Network scanning setup is easy for 1 user and simple for an entire office.

Cons: Queue'd jobs are a little slow. This is not nearly as fast as a high end Xerox, but it is also a tenth of the cost

Other Thoughts: Setup Network scanning:
You need a XP Pro PC that has access to a shared drive that is ALWAYS ON. This is important, the way this machine is cheap is that it is "dumb". There is no intelligence on-board. Thus, the intelligence needs to be in a software program.
Install HP software on a PC that is always on and has access to share drive.
Create Scans folder on share drive. Hide folder for privacy.
In the share create a directory for each scanning user.
From HP software direct the "Scan to..." to network share/user’s directory (you will create a profile for each user)
User Group Policy to create a map drive to this user folder within the hidden scans folder
Now, as long as
a.) the "scanning" PC is on and has access to the share
b.) the user has a profile in HP software
Your users can choose their name from the display on the Printer and automagically scan to their mapped drive. You are a hero ;)

1 out of 5 eggsBROKEN IN VISTA

Pros: Very nice print quality. Great tool for XP users.

Cons: 1. Only printing works with Vista, NOTHING ELSE. This is INEXCUSABLE.

2. Slow to print subsequent copies of document fed through sheet feeder. Second or later copies take at least 20 seconds per page.

Very disappointed that HP totally dropped the ball on VISTA SUPPORT.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

Pros: Great Color & B/W output. Laser = no smearing. Has about all the functions one would need. Network port (great for wireless printing when connected to a wifi router)! Vista makes wifi connectivity very easy, and the included software makes it a breeze on XP.

Cons: Need to be connected via USB for scanning. It won't work over network. XP drivers & Vista 32bit drivers are great. However I'm running 64bit Vista and as of this writing it only supports B/W printing. I haven't tried XP or 32bit Vista drivers yet. No duplex.

Other Thoughts: I bought this simply for 1 user - me, after evaluating how much inkjets cartridges costs. The toners cost a bit, but last much longer than inkjets (4000-5000 pages). Better to pay more up front, than get a free printerand keep buying overpriced ink that lasts for about 100 pages. Plus my GF (school teacher) loves it as it saves her many $$ trips to Kinkos. It's really overkill for us, but we love it so much now we'll never go back to the inkjets.

2 out of 5 eggsSuboptimal quality all-in-one unit

Pros: excellent service and return policy

Cons: Prints and faxes well, but scanning is not sharp. I returned the machine is due to the copy function. It's possible to achieve accurate B&W reproduction, and well as color reproduction, but it is not possible to achieve both together. A typed document with a colored border will be inaccurately reproduced either by color, or by black and white print. You pick. I had tech support in my home. They agreed. I tried 2 different units, both the same. I don't recommend this product, and returned it for a refund.
