5 out of 5 eggsReview of HP P3005x

Pros: This thing is awesome. My adviser ordered 2 of these for the office and they print fast and in good quality. This is a great printer for a small office. We have about 6 people printing over the network and no problems. Set up was easy too.

Also, works on basically every OS, *nix based, Windows and Mac

Cons: Nothing really, the duplex printing is a bit odd (it shoots out the page then sucks it back in) but not really a con.

Other Thoughts: The guy who thought the menu setup was awful and poorly setup obviously hasn't dealt with networked printers before. It is basically run of the mill HP style and to me it is set up logically and orderly. We assign ip addresses at my office and that was a breeze to enter, as was the host name etc. Another cool thing is that you can print out stats for it and all kinds of stuff. This thing is super customizable. If you are looking for a nice small office printer that isn't a couple grand this is perfect.

4 out of 5 eggsPrinter is L337

Pros: The print rate is pretty good, and the quality never degrades over long print jobs, even as the fuser gets red hot. The time to first page is great.

Cons: Menu is confusing and poorly setup. The fuser randomly streaked pages for about 10 minutes one day and hasn't done it since. Rollers on tray 3 randomly squeaks and jams.

Other Thoughts: Good value for a small business but a little pricey for home use.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Fast, Inexpensive (comparitively), Duplex

Cons: Cant print from tray 3 if tray 2 is open...but not that big of a deal

Other Thoughts: Just got this to replace an HP 5si, that has been kicking stong for 12 years...This printer is smaller, faster and much less expensive than I spent 12 years ago.

A great buy!

3 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: Very quiet! Starts the print job fast.

Cons: We use this to print payroll and it prints SO SLOW! I even put an addition 256M of ram in it. Our old printer that was built in the 90's was faster.

Other Thoughts: It does support all the major protocols for printing. Of course we only used the raw 9100.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Printer

Pros: This replaced an old parallel-port laser printer that was shared to the network. Three words describe the experience. NIGHT AND DAY. First prints are an order of magnitude faster (since it doesn't need to go through a host machine). Duplexing is fast and flawless. And print quality is great.

And, unlike some of the cheapo HP Laserjets, you do NOT need to install the entire "HP Suite" just to use the printer. Set up a new network printer, point it at the printer driver, and you're done.

Cons: Price isn't for cheapskates. If you want cheap, go buy a crummy inkjet and suffer.

Other Thoughts: I wish the documentation shipping with the printer was a bit more detailed. The printer was accidentally bricked once (PEBCAK) and needed a factory reset (which isn't documented in the manual).

Other than that, it's a great printer.

3 out of 5 eggspc driver good, mac driver bad

Pros: the windows side works great! options do what they should etc, and speedy!

Cons: mac drivers suck, they cant even choose trays, it just defaults to TRAY 3

Other Thoughts: get it if you don't have a mac!!

5 out of 5 eggsRecommended

Pros: Easy to set up - we use it as a shared network printer and did all network and tray settings thru the top panel before even connecting to the network. Does everything we expected. Makes a good upgrade / replacement for printers like the LaserJet 4050 or 4100, although HP calls it a replacement for lower-end printers.

Cons: For two-sided printing, the HP driver wants you to chose between flipping up (usually best for landscape printing) or sideways (good for portrait mode). If you duplex both landscape and portrait, you may need to change your driver settings every time you change orientation. The Microsoft Windows drivers for some older HP LaserJets let you specify "long edge" duplexing, which works for me with either orientation.

Other Thoughts: This is the high-end of the P3005 line, with network connector, duplexer, and an extra tray (total 2 500-sheet trays, plus the foldout). The duplexer works differently from older models and may make you smile - watch the LCD display.
