4 out of 5 eggsSolid printer

Pros: Starts printing fairly quickly from power save mode, excellent text quality. Fairly quiet compared to other brands. Stable PS & PCL drivers. Solid build quality.

Cons: Only comes with one paper tray.
The price of the accessories for Okidata printers is fairly high. The 2nd paper tray was (at the time of purchase) about the same price I paid for the printer.
Ethernet port is only 100Mb, would prefer Gigabit.
Memory expansion was also expensive but I found a workaround.

Other Thoughts: I've had 6 Okidata printers before this one, and asides from my ML180 dot matrix, this is probably the best. I wore the other LED/Laser models out over the years.

I bought a second unit for my mother, and she loves it because she just needs to put paper in occasionally.

I did max out the RAM for both, as I find it improves the performance when printing complex documents. I used Kingston KTB-HL533/256 and it worked flawlessly. Got it from Newegg for $15.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat printer for what I needed

Pros: I work in finance, and my job requires printing fairly long text-based documents such as annual reports, quarterly reports, etc. Therefore I had a very specific need - a workhorse printer that can churn out double-sided pages of (mostly) text. I wasn't looking for one of those "all in one" printers that prints in color, scanning, faxing, copying. Overkill for what I need.

So far the B431dn has worked out perfectly. The first print job of the day requires about a 15 second warm up. After that, printouts come out almost immediately. It prints out pages fast enough for me - about 1 double-sided page every 3 seconds. The printouts are clear and crisp.

The install disk was super easy and I had the printer up and running in about 10 minutes.

Cons: I hear the toner cartridge refills are expensive, but that's probably true for most printers.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 13 months...

Pros: Decent speed and print quality.

Cons: Died 13 months after 13 months of use. Error "134" which is either the motherboard or LED printhead, per Oki service rep. Cost to just have Oki look at it is more than the cost of a new printer.

For a small office environment, this is the only laser printer I've ever purchased that has failed to last at least 4 years.

Other Thoughts: Will not buy an Oki printer ever again. Should have stuck with HP.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Printer I ever Bought

Pros: This thing is awesome. I have it hooked to my router and 8 computers access it wired and wirelessly through the router. I loaded the driver software disc into each computer, some with XP, XP Pro, Vista 64 bit, 7 and a Mac Mini with OSX before Maverick came out. The most interesting thing about the setup was the Mac just recognized it on the network and no disc was necessary for that 1 computer. I have saved a ton of money on regular inkjet ink. It is the fastest I have ever had, but it is also the only Laser (LED).

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Just came back to get another one for a friend that has been having all kinds of trouble with inkjet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Printer

Pros: Great printer, one of the best I have ever owned. I replaced two Brother HL-5240 printers with this one. The Brothers were very nice printers, but this Oki is nicer made. I plan to buy one more as a back up in the next few weeks.

Cons: It was a bit stinky when it printed the first hundred pages. It give you a blast of a chemical smell as the paper feeds out. I asked the Oki tech about this while calling in to figure out how the front paper feed works. They said it has a very hot toner fuser and that is what you smell. The smell seems to be gone now. Never did figure out how to individual sheet feed from the front.

4 out of 5 eggsStill Tank Tough

Pros: Quiet, Fast, easy setup, durable, duplexes, and very good consumables.

Cons: Ethernet isn't gigabit, stock RAM is a bit low, accessories from Oki are outrageously priced.
Prints with large areas of gray or black exhibit some banding, but it's not terrible, and doesn't detract from the overall print quality.

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd B431dn, and this one I got for the amazing price of $154.98, basically half price. This one I setup for my mother, took maybe 5 minutes to get it un-boxed, plugged in and setup on the network.

I added N82E16820239355 which is a 256MB DIMM that is compatible with this printer, bringing the RAM to 320MB, enough to handle pretty much any document you have. At $15, it was a no brainer when the Okidata version of that DIMM is $280, nearly twice what I paid for the printer.

I've been using Okidata printers for nearly 30 years (I feel so OLD...) and have rarely been let down by them I do wish their 2nd paper trays and other accessories were not so wildly expensive though.

5 out of 5 eggsPhenomenal! Where have you been all my years OKI??

Pros: FAST FAST FAST! I thought I would have to spend $500+ to get a fast laser printer. NOT THE CASE with OKI!

Really easy setup. I set the IP to manual using the small 3 inch LCD window on the printer itself and it was easy as pie.

Cons: It wasn't free?!? I couldn't possibly list a con for this printer.

Other Thoughts: So tired of HP/Brother/Dell/etc. games with inkjet cartridges that have a count set or "expiration date" on the ink. My HP all-in-one inkjet L7780 suddenly stopped working and told me the cyan cartridge was past it's expiration date. All attempts to reset, reseat, and finally replace it failed. The printer became stuck on "aligning." Ridiculous. I am done paying $80+ for the inkjet cartridges. Found this OKI and ordered it based on the reviews on Newegg. (actually the small family owned company I work for bought it - hence why my review isn't a "verified purchase.") I was just so impressed by it I had to leave a review for it.

5 out of 5 eggsBUY IT!

Pros: Is a workhorse, doesn't suck up toner, works well in a dusty warehouse. Price is good

Cons: has had a couple issues where it thought it had a jam but not really a con, probably due to the dusty environment

Other Thoughts: Story time... We had 4 brand-new Dell 3330dn printers ($500ea) that came in our new warehouse management package. They all sat in storage for 12 months while we prepared for the transition, (which caused the warranty to expire) Than after go-live and literally only 3 months of use, 1 of them, whether from being overworked or not, got too hot and melted some plastic cover on one of the rollers which messed the whole thing up, So I call Dell and get shafted because the warranty is up and they wanted $250 bucks for the new fuser assembly! Found this oki for $250 that same day and bought it, 3 months later I ask the warehouse guys how they like it.... they say it prints faster, uses wayyy less toner, & never bugs out not to mention the toner is around $60 cheaper. This may be sounding like a dell bash so I wont bring up all the other problems Ive been having with the remaining 3. It just makes me mad to think Dell wants $500 for a printer that is supposed to be the same caliber as this one if not better and wont even back it up. I got 2 oki's now (c330dn) and these 2 printers are the only ones out of my mix of Dell, HP, Canon, & Ricohs that have never once given me any issue since I first set them up. Needless to say I'm a dedicated OKI customer from here on out, Keep up the good work and affordable prices OKI!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Linux printer

Pros: This is my 3rd Okidata LED printer in 18 years. The 2nd one is 12 years old and still works fine, I just wanted duplexing. The B431dn has higher resolution, 40ppm and both PCL5 and Postscript 3 capability.

I dualboot Win7/Kubuntu. The B431 was instantly recognized by Kubuntu 12.10 via USB. Duplexing, PCL and PS are fully supported using the large selection of available Linux drivers. If you use Kubuntu 12.10, make sure you turn off the "reject all printer jobs" box which is enabled by default. Installing Win7 drivers was more problematic than Kubuntu, because hotplugging the USB cable wouldn't trigger the Add New Hardware wizard. That may be a problem with the USB port in my computer. I intalled the Win7 driver manually instead.

The B431 really is fast, both to the first page and per page. I initially printed a 300 page duplexed document, and there were no jammed pages or problems of any kind. It sure is nice to have reliable duplexing!

I haven't tried networking yet.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsSecond Printer

Pros: Works really well. Prints fast. Text is crisp. Warm-up time is pretty quick.

Cons: Doesn't come with any cables other than a power cable, which is unfortunate. I am not crazy about the color, but I knew it was black before I bought it so that really isn't a con. Maybe I am too hung up on the color, but my computer and other stuff is beige and I would have preferred a beige printer as well.

I set it up on a network and I had a small issue with setting a static IP Address for the printer. It was nothing I couldn't handle, but it took me a little while to figure out how to do it. I have two of these printers and as I recall, when I connected the last printer to the network I had the same problem. I just forgot how I solved it so I had to figure it out all over again.

Other Thoughts: I have another one of these printers which I bought several months ago. It works so well that when they were on sale here a little while ago with discounts, I ended up getting another one. I figured for $199 it was an offer I couldn't refuse, so I bought a second one. It is working great, and the wife and the two daughters love having two printers.
