5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Feature Set for Little Money

Pros: Amazing set of network printing features for little money and in such a small size. Initial print quality is great, though I obviously have not had the printer long enough to really judge print quality over the life of a toner cartridge. I'm using 1200 dpi mode and printing on both sides. Very fast printer for its size. Easy to configure with comprehensive web admin (using Ethernet connection). For network management geeks, this printer has an extensive SNMP MIB with a MIB dump yielding over 1800 items including the standard Printer MIB, the PWG Job Monitoring MIB and a Samsung printer MIB.

Cons: Included toner cartridge is rated at only 1000 pages. Replacement toner is 50% more expensive per page than for my older larger Samsung printer (ML-3560), but you get a new drum more often. (Comparing 1500/2500 page rating of 2955 toner vs 6000 page rating of 3560 toner.)

Other Thoughts: The web admin (SyncThru) is much more comprehensive and responsive than the windows admin (Easy Printer Manager). I changed the password in the web admin to a new 25-character password and then could not log in. I thought I was locked out. I was saved by a forum entry at edugeek.net where user justanswering posted in Feb 2012 that he figured out that only the first 18 characters of the configured password were taken in his similar Samsung printer. I was able to log in by entering only the first 18 characters of my long password. Also, do write down the Login ID and Password if you change it, because I have yet to find any way to recover a lost password, or without logging in, to reset the login to the default ID of admin with password sec00000. Maybe there's a secret power-up button press, but I have not found it.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid WIRED network printer

Pros: Relatively compact size. Yes, part of the paper tray, when set to letter, does protrude 1/2" out the rear (letter is NOT the shipping default), but the power cord plug sticks out more. Not any louder than my several year old HP laser.

Legal size will protrude 3 3/4", and for all you foreigners, A4 sticks out 1 3/8". Adjustment is made at rear of paper tray, tab to the right when looking front to back. These standard sizes are labeled, and have detents, on the length adjustment slide.

Standard widths are noted on width adjustment slide, but do not have detents.

Printed text clean and clear, sharp. Feels solidly built.

Cons: Instructional DIAGRAM can be a bit obtuse for some adjustments (e.g., the width adjustment of the paper tray is done by pushing the tab inwards, towards the tray, to free the holding pins). Easier to see the length adjustments by completely removing the tray.

Tradeoff: while the flap of the output tray serves as a cover to protect from dust when closed, if you forget to open before printing...

Other Thoughts: First set up using usb connection (have plenty of extra usb cables around as, noted by MANY, usb cable not included). Windows 7 x64 found the drivers it needed for printer to work; I just patiently waited for windows to finish finding what it needed. Printed test page to verify.

Connected to network switch via a cat5e cable (also not included). Had already downloaded ML-2950_SP_setup.exe (set IP)
http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/model/ML-2955ND/XAA-downloads

Ran program; it found printer; let program set IP address. Let Windows 7 find the drivers it needed to connect via wired network connection.

Disconnected usb and deleted the "usb printer" entry from Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Devices and Printers. While there, used the [right click] Printer Properties to rename the wired printer to a recognizable name. Successfully printed test page.

This being my first duplex printer (main reason for buying), unfamiliar with its physics: printer ejects 3/4 of the page to the output tray, then drags it back in to print other side (moral: don't be in a rush to check that print job).

Have not noticed any problems with "single sheet" pickups.

Once you have the IP address, there is a web UI for configuring.

If you want a WIRELESS printer, look elsewhere, but for a wired network, works great.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Printer

Pros: Intuitive, easy setup by simply following included illustrated instructions.
Driver installed easily. Did NOT choose to send info to Samsung (unchecked second box) and software/driver still installed without a hitch.
Makes EXCELLENT prints with default settings.

Cons: No USB cable included, but this is PLAINLY stated on the box and all sales info. Still, as inexpensive as they are to a manufacturer the omission of a cable to connect their printer to the computer just says CHEAP in my book, so one star off the rating for this.

Other Thoughts: Bought on sale ($60) and feel I got MORE than my money's worth. Recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, fast and affordable

Pros: Getting a laser printer with duplex for under a hundred dollars is fantastic!
Confirmed working with Ubuntu and Mac OSX lion
Large amount of ram for price
Quiet compared to my old Kyocera fs1020d
No fan that turns of for prolonged periods of time

Cons: No physical on/off switch. I feel like It's using power even when its off
Manual feed tray only accepts 1 page at a time
Small output tray compared to last printer

Other Thoughts: I put the extra savings towards the $3 extended warranty to cover my bases
Overall I'm super happy there isn't a constant fan and this printer smells less too.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung ML-2955ND Printer.

There is an On/Off Switch.

Please refer to your User Manual and look under the "Machine Overview" section. There is a product diagram that shows the Power Switch.

4 out of 5 eggsGood printer, annoying software

Pros: Good, inexpensive networked laser, networkable, duplex. Consumables are not absurdly priced.
Can be detected and installed out of the box (at least by Win7)

Cons: Driver waits until first print job to prompt to send "customer experience data" to Samsung. Stops everything cold until you respond. So your stuck with either manually installing to all machines anyway, or dealing with questions from half the users - while wondering if the users who aren't asking clicked yes in violation of our security policy.

Other Thoughts: Five-egg printer, but I won't give five eggs to anything with software this intrusive and potentially troubling.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent repair service

Pros: Good printer.
Good quality printing. very fast and quite.

Cons: It stopped working and I contact to Samsung through the chat, and the man did everything for the return, shipping, and repair. They sent me a UPS label for free shipping. They repaired the same day they received it and shipped the same day and I received it the next day. I never have such a service quality before from any other company.

Other Thoughts: I strongly believe Samsung is a good company and the product quality be world top class. I will buy Samsung if it is available.
