A real printer for a business network on a budget
- Pros: If you need a fast, reliable, no-nonsense duplexing network printer with inexpensive toner replacements, then this is it! When you buy a Brother laser, you get great print utilities that take up minimal resources and are no-nonsense: install only what you need. You also get a reliable machine that just works and works and works and gives you no problems.
My previous machine was a Brother HL-1240 laser and I've had it 7 years now. The last paper jam was 5 years ago! The HL-5250 carries forward the spirit with more features (useable ones) and the same no-nonsense approach. Since it is a professional network laser, it has some useful hidden tools if you choose to access them. For example, it has an accessible settings and log page where it tracks time and cycle life of each component: just use internet explorer!
For printers, you need not look elsewhere... you're getting the best right here!
- Cons: The quick-print option that you can select to run in the task-tray doesn't seem to work. This may be because it is conflicting with the old Brother tray it overwrote from my 1240. This was an excellent feature that allowed me to select paper tray, duplex, toner-save mode and other features before I started printing stuff off. I didn't have to go in and configure every time I printed each document. I wish I could get it to work again... I'll have to do some troubleshooting!
- Other Thoughts: I originally thought this was a con, but now I understand: you have to open the front door to manually feed a sheet; they did this because the door acts as a paper tray to hold multiple sheets so you don't have to feed each individual sheet... nice!
Solid
- Pros: Setup was a snap... I didnt even use the CD. All you need to do is plug it in print out the network config direct from the printer to see what IP it has (see manual), and go to that IP via you favorite web browser. From there use the NICE GUI and make you changes... static ip, printer name, ect...
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: Good network printer for the cost

LOVE IT
- Pros: This machine is a beast! It is fast and a workhorse. You cannot beat it for the price.
- Cons: none
P.S.
- Pros: Fast
- Cons: Power hog
- Other Thoughts: I forgot to mention==I have RMA'd the printer as it is not worth enduring the power problems.
Power hungry but fast
- Pros: Fast printouts and the software setup process is easy.
- Cons: There is a power drain of such intensity when this printer wakes up that my UPS beeps and the power supply in the computer (PC Cooling & Power 510 SLI) trips and shuts off the computer. Everything BUT the printer are protected by an APC 650 UPS. Isolating the computer, monitor (2101 DELL LCD), basic 2-speaker audio, cable modem, router and printer onto its own 20A circuit made no difference when this printer is on the same circuit. Before this, the computer and printer ( Brother 1270N network laser) were on the same circuit as my cable TV box, DVD player, VCR, stereo system, and 32 inch CRT TV. Once in a while the UPS would beep but the computer p.s. never tripped until I replaced my old Brother 1270N with this one. Needing a dedicated circuit just for this printer is a bit much, and costly, just to get the speedy printouts.
- Other Thoughts: The curled printouts can be a real pain if you let more than 3-4 sheets accumulate in the output tray--they get shoved out onto the floor. Newegg.com continues to be an excellent merchant.
