This is a surprisingly great printer and software package. The Faxing abilities alone surpass many dedicated fax only machines. Among the surprises is a well designed fast automatic sheet fed scanner and a flat sheet scanner that neatly use the same high quality sensor array. The Paperport software included makes converting manuscript pages to text files a breeze. This great software not only allows editing and clean up of pdf files but easy automatic printing of 2 or mores pages on a single sheet. The fax even has provision for single phone line use which detects and responds to a received fax and then using a pseudo ring sends the call through its EXT port for voice answering. Its flashcard input ports include writing as well as reading and printing from flashcards. Some other printers only have reading ability. The quality and fidelity of the color prints are outstanding even on plain paper. The 4 Ink tank costs are reasonable.
- Cons: There are so many abilities featured in this Brother MFC-240C that the casual user may be bewildered and not make the effort to learn how to use them detracting from its appeal. Brother should make a short card version of quick codes after menu selection such as one that I made and taped on the machine.
The specification that puts Brother on shaky ground is the published speed. About 20 ppm is only achievable by printing 20 copies of the same blank page. Do not expect to achieve anywhere near this in normal printing of a file from the computer or of copies by the fast sheet fed scanner. In the “fast” draft mode the best I got was about 4 or 5 ppm. Another drawback is that envelopes need to be loaded separately by removing the loaded paper and replacing it with envelopes- not exactly handy for the occassional letter writer but good for mass envelope addressing. An extra paper magazine to store envelopes can overcome this.
