4 out of 5 eggsOne downside

Pros: Quiet, fast, great print quality.

Cons: Document feeder (like for labels and stuff) is EXTREMELY fussy. You have to get the sheet in there EXACTLY right or it won't feed. If it's a hair's breadth off you get an error light. You have to turn it off and start over. Took 6 tries this AM.

Other Thoughts: If you're going to be printing a lot of labels or stuff that has to go through the document feeder you're going to be really frustrated. If you hardly ever use that, you'll be just fine.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: Linux aware. Even offers downloads from their web-site. Fast printer, nice print. Brother printers got good reviews in Consumer Reports. If it could print envelopes it I would give it 5 stars. Great value. I caught a Shell Shocker Deal at $45 for the printer. High yield (2600 page) toner only $45 = 1.7 cents per page.

Cons: 100% of envelopes tried got damaged. #10 business envelopes, two types tried multiple times. Trailing edges all get damaged, often the printer irons a wrinkle into the side for the last 3 inches. Damage is while using the straight-through feed. I am keeping my old Canon ink-jet printer just for envelopes. Power surge when it starts printing. LED bulb in desklamp flickers, UPS beeps. Fan is noticeable, but not too loud. Fan noise stops after 10 minutes of no action.

Other Thoughts: Kill-A-Watt readings - Power ON causes surges to 10 Amps - once stable it drops to 4 or 5 watts with fan running. After 10 minutes fan noise stops and power drops to 0 watts, 0 VA. Watching watts reading when printing from stand-by -> surge to 890 watts then as fast as the page is done drops back to 5 watts then in 10 minutes quiet - 0 watts. So I just leave it plugged in and on all the time.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Printer

Pros: Cheap got it on sale. It works great. No problems so far.
I bought Rosewill cartridges which makes it even more economical to run.

Cons: A little noisy, but aren't all printers?

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a backup my brother color printer. Even though it is not wireless, I was able to share it using my network.

5 out of 5 eggsHL-2220

Pros: Small, Prints Great,

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Replace's HL-2140 that is just out of warranty. Had not emptyed the 700 page toner that came with it. I purchased 3 year warranty with the HL-2220 just in case it doesn' last any better than HL-2140

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little black & white laser printer with Linux support!!

Pros: What a great little printer with a small footprint. The bottom tray holds 250 pages, more than enough for me and a lot more than my inkjet. You can also feed directly through manually, which is nice for label sheets or envelopes. Works so easily in Linux with CUPS wrapper/driver supplied by the vendor.

Cons: Holymoly this thing sucks a lot of juice when it prints something. It makes my apartment's lights flicker and the UPS go bonkers. I put it on a test bench and found it sucks 6A when charging up and normally sits at idle sucking nearly nothing.

Other Thoughts: Wow this printer was cheap on sale! We'll see how it goes, but the toner is likely to cost as much as the unit. There is NO LED screen on this thing, which makes it seem old-fashioned almost. You do get some indicator LEDs for issues. Doesn't bother me to not have to traverse tiny menus to get things done.. The driver support is great.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Cheap, fast, reliable. Loud?? Nah. Worked perfectly out of the box under Ubuntu 10.04 management. A great printer for Linux.

Cons: Are you kidding? (Wish I had gotten the wireless though).

Other Thoughts: I bought the HL2140 about a year ago to replace an Epson Ink-Jet when I found out that the Ink for the Epson would cost more than this laser printer from Brother. I also bought a toner cartridge at the same time for about $30 bucks because the rap at the time was that the printer could only get about 15 pages using the cartridge that came with the unit. Almost a year and some 500 pages later I am still using the original cartridge. Of course I followed some Internet advice and put electrical tape over the sensors on the cartridge so it could not tell you that it was low on toner when in actuality it was not. If you don't need color and want a reliable printer that just works and won't empty your wallet with ink cost, here's your daisy.
