2 out of 5 eggs&%#@% PAPER JAMS!!!

Pros: When it works, it's really versatile. Set up easy with Windows 7 and wifi. Print quality is decent.

Cons: PAPER JAMS!!! Spent $100 to replace some rollers out of warranty because Newegg sent us an old stock machine - the service center could not cover this machine under warranty. Worked OK for 1 month, and jamming again. Wish Brother would stand behind their product...

Other Thoughts: First problem was the cheap Rosewill toner cartridges that leaked toner all over the place. Now continual paper jams that render this thing useless. Brother needs a longer warranty and should stand behind their product better.

4 out of 5 eggsReally Handy Machine!

Pros: Does it all! Love the scan to email feature. Set this up wirelessly on my home network with minimum hassle. Print quality is fine, but won't try to do hi resolution photos.

Cons: Owned for almost 2 years. Only printed 4500 pages so far, as this is my backup machine. Having trouble with paper jams when printing duplex, and we are not using cheap paper. This machine is heavy - be sure you have two people to move or carry it. Spent 45 minutes waiting on hold for customer service to walk me through the troubleshooting that I have done numerous times without success. Now taking it for service...

Other Thoughts: If not for the paper jams we have been experiencing lately, I would give this printer 5 eggs.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the Job

Pros: Setup was easy and instructions were excellent.
Print quality was excellent and the operation is
intuitive.

Cons: Too much emphasis on the fax features

Other Thoughts: This machine services our small office of three persons. It might not be strong enough for a larger office.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Wireless, Mediocre Print Quality

Pros: It prints stacks of envelopes like a beast!

Cons: After speaking with Brother support numerous times, the wireless setup still drops even in Ad-hoc mode (not connected to my router). I was told this would prove the machine is faulty and thus we could get it repaired, but being able to connect temporarily (a few hours) means every time I call and reset it and am able to connect, they say everything is fixed, only for me to lose my connection a few hours later and have to reset the network configurations over and over again.

And I knew this through review prior to purchase, but the print quality really is poor (images, even color text). I came spoiled from a Canon, perhaps, but this Brother requires a lot of work to get a half-decent image (calibrations, color-altering, etc.) It also requires cleaning more often.

Other Thoughts: All in all, friendly customer support is no replacement for a wireless printer that disconnects often and prints rather poorly.

5 out of 5 eggsEggcellent Printer!

Pros: I've purchased more than 12 of these printers for various clients and ALL of them love it. The biggest feature for them is the direct scan-to-email from the printer itself (it doesn't require any software on the computer) along with the touch screen. It truly is a miniature copy machine! I've installed this both wired and wirelessly with flawless results. The standalone printer drivers are only 18MB, unlike HP all-in-ones that are upwards of 300MB just to print! The result is a very simple and easy to use mechanism to print, scan, and fax. Bravo Brother!

Cons: The printer's web user interface is not the easiest to use for most people. Luckily I've discovered that it is a "set it and forget it" kind of setup. This only applies to networking the printer. The admin login is non-standard (usually admin/password) but is admin/access. That's about all my complaints!

Other Thoughts: Overall this is a great printer. I have lots of clients that can barely use a fax machine, let alone complicated software to control a printer/scanner. Because all of the functions (besides printing from a PC) can be done on the device itself, it makes it much easier for the end user. Like I said above, I've purchased about 12 of these and plan on purchasing many more in the future. BROTHER - DO NOT STOP MAKING THIS PRINTER!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Small Business

Pros: We use this printer for a 5 person office. It is great! It has all the features we need. I especially like the "scan to e-mail" feature. Everything is pretty easy to setup (< 3 hours) for all the networking and e-mail setup. Ink is available at local stores (Staples).

Cons: For our purposes none. Like I said if you are a small business (< 15 people) and print less then 150 pages a day this is the printer for you.

3 out of 5 eggs70lbs of features, limited control

Pros: 3,000 characters is not enough to describe the good and bad of this beast. You can visit the Brother website for the many positive qualities of this machine. There is a reason this machine has 4 manuals, each 100+ pages. It does come with a quick setup, and one of the 4 large manuals printed. Drivers, software, and manuals are on 2 CDs.

Type the MFC's IP address in a web browser on your LAN to access the web server. The web setup has options that are not in ControlCenter4. Be careful of that though. You may find yourself at the touch pad performing a default...

I am dropping the score because of the Cons. That was the main reason I purchased this. I am giving it up to 3 eggs because of the other features I cannot describe here. If you can overlook the other negatives, this is still a great unit.

Cons: I am required to submit documents to the home office. The scan to email was a great feature, I can loose the fax line completely. Load the ADF, hit a few buttons and walk away.

Turns out that all of the documents scanned are stored in 1 image.pdf. No way to make each document a separate file, AND there is no way to change the name of the file. So even emailing each document one at a time results in lots of emails with the same file name. Might as well revert back to FAX.

Be very careful of the Email RX feature. You will wake up one morning and find letters, nicely printed out, from relatives in Nigeria offering you money. Tech support also indicated there was also no way to buffer the emails and only print the important letters. I even bought the extra 256mb of memory from Newegg for that feature.

I expected a lot more in a stand alone multifunction at this price. There is the option to scan to a PC, then sort everything that way. But why give up half the multi-function featur

Other Thoughts: There is no way to preview photos on the touch screen. You can print out an index, which tries to read every file on the USB device, then prints out thumbnails of everything found. Color laser/LED printers are not up to the task of photo printing anyway. Not a loss there.

I am not sure if the processor is slow or if it's the 100mbit network port. Scanning documents at anything higher than 300dpi results in stutters in the paperwork. When scanned at 1200x1200dpi the pauses are visible up close when reprinted.

I am pretty sure WiFi would be useless for anything other than general printing.

Also, this DOES weight 63 pounds empty. Add paper all around and you are looking at a desk bender.

The stated print capacity is >750pages/month. The minimum is because there is a bit of toner waste. It needs to "recalibrate" occasionally. A firmware update supposedly makes it easier on those of us who don't print out reams a months.
Thanks for reading.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate from my last

Pros: The duplex scanning is great, once I figured out how to use it. I needed to setup their software on the computer first and then when you "scan to pc" it's the very last option before you press start.

Cons: The only gripe I have, seeing as how I've only used it about a dozen or so times, is how loud the auto-loader is on the scanner. Sounds like they used a cheap motor to save some pennies. I'm crossing fingers that it doesn't die to soon as this was one of the main reasons I purchased this printer.

Other Thoughts: I'm looking forward to seeing how the scanner holds up. I'm an instructor and I'll be scanning and storing all my students work so that I will have .pdfs of all their work.
