3 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Features, price, works good for normal printing

Cons: Had some trouble with wireless dropouts, wish I could print/scan from a web interface.

The real problems I ran into were printing envelopes. I get black marks on the top edge of all envelopes. Called Brother support and was told that my envelopes are too thick (greater than 20-25lb.). They seem like pretty normal envelopes to me, but evidently not.

Also the lack of duplex scanning with the automatic document feeder is a bummer.

Other Thoughts: Not bad, but would look elsewhere next time. Still in search of the perfect printer.

1 out of 5 eggsConstantly jams, causing print heads to fail

Pros: Decent features; initial print quality; cheap

Cons: As other reviews point out, this printer constantly jams. I just want to add that, sometimes when it jams, the print head doesn't park, so the head is left exposed to the air. We bought just one black print cartridge for this thing (so its total page count is really low -- I think it's under 3 months old) before it died. A piece of paper got stuck in it (in contact with the print head), and we didn't notice, since it was a long print job, and we wandered off. Anyway, the paper pulled the ink out of the head, and now the machine is ruined (unlike some other brother printers, they dont seem to sell replacement heads for this model). We told it to clean the print heads, and that ate through half of all three color cartridges. Now black and magenta sort of print, but we're out of ink...

I have another brother product (an auto-fed document scanner), which comes with bundled software from Nuance. When I installed the drivers for this printer, it force uninstalled the other nuance software without prompting (so that it could install a terrible nuance PDF viewer that likes to hijack pdf rendering). The nuance package that came with the scanner isn't so great, but it does work, and it's the only way I can scan to PDFs and OCR without shelling out $100+ on replacement software. Anyway, the brother printer drivers force uninstalled the brother scanner OCR software, I had no way to use the scanner until I found the product key for the scanner drivers. It's a shame, since I really like the document scanner hardware, and at the moment, neither the printer nor the documents scanner are working.

Finally, the drivers seem OK with native Windows and Linux, but if you try to print from a virtual machine, the print speeds drop to under a page a minute. This is on two high end machines (and the CPU is idle during the slow printing). Not sure why, but my guess is that there's some networking issue or something. Not sure I care any more.

Other Thoughts: We broke one of the external hinges on day one. Not sure how, or what the hinge is for, but it makes it seem even flimsier. The hinge has something to do with the scanner.

One potential positive with this printer is that it works out of the box with bundled windows drivers. Unfortunately, those drivers only support low quality printing and scanning, so they're more of a time-waster than a feature.

This is one of those annoying printers that refuses to print black and white when the color ink is gone.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality Printer

Pros: This is a feature packed printer. text printing is much improved over brother printers of a few years ago. Very easy set up in Ubuntu Linux. Very good photo prints (read the manual on which options to choose for Best quality prints). Will allow custom printer ICC profiles to be used. Past experience tells me that Brother printers are very durable.

Cons: It is a little slow to start the first page of print after the machine is in standby.

Other Thoughts: I used a Brother printer for years. When it failed I decided to try an HP, as I had heard how great the Linux support was. The HP was actually much harder to install and the Quality of Photo prints was much worse. The Hp over saturated reds (magenta looked like bright red) and the prints lacked detail. I kept it a week then bought the MFC-J825DW from Newegg.

3 out of 5 eggsBLOATWARE! Printer seems solid.

Pros: The printer feels well built. I bought it to replace an HP that crapped out as soon as the warranty passed. Scanner is good, I like the LAN functionality, prints fast.

Cons: Bloatware, garbage bloatware. Nothing fills me with rage like seeing a pop up telling me about software to make my typing faster on my own desktop. I've noticed a significant performance decrease since installing the suite. I tried to install just the drivers and the scanning/network management software. I guess you need to install drivers only and then look for third party utilities to manage the scanning/etc. This isn't acceptable.

The photo printing lacks definition, but it's more of an office printer anyway.

Other Thoughts: Physically, the printer seems great, which makes me even more frustrated by the short sighted decision to garbage up the software.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat wireless printer

Pros: Connected to my wireless network in like 3 seconds. Love the way it shuts off by itself and restarts when you print.

Cons: Drops wireless connection, just have to shut down and restart. Pain in the neck.

4 out of 5 eggsGood printer but read ALL directions

Pros: Does everything but the dishes.

Cons: Installations a little tricky and if you have never used a printer like this before just take some extra time and read the instructions its not as simple as just popping in the install disc especially if you plan to use the wireless option had to deduct an egg.

Other Thoughts: Install could be easier, and the USB plug in could be in a better location took me a minute to find lol

4 out of 5 eggsOffline when in sleep Fixed and Loving it!!

Pros: Everything about this printer is amazing. The Ink not having the write heads on them will save some cash. Being able to scan something with out ever touching the computer is quite nice. Just to much to list really.

Cons: I did have the issue of the printer going offline when it went to sleep. Did a little bit of debugging and found out that part of my problem was the firewall on most of the computers in my house and then found that the printer and one of my DirecTV boxes was fighting for the same internal IP. Setting up a static IP is your best bet with this printer making sure you check your router to find an unused IP. after that I have had no problems at all.

Other Thoughts: after the offline when sleeping was gone I had nothing but positive experiences with this printer and if you have at least a little bit above basic knowledge of networking its not really a big problem.

5 out of 5 eggsFaster Quality

Pros: Compared to Lexmark on price, performance, and quality, there is no comparison. The Brother printer goes above and beyond. Ink prices are lower compared to any other competing brand.

Cons: No Cons.
