2 out of 5 eggsAwful for printing double sided

Pros: Affordable printing per page

Cons: Cannot print back to back, even manually. I knew buying it that it did not have a duplexer and I would have to manually flip my pages to print double sided. After printing one side of a flyer on 50 pages, I flipped them over to print the other side. Every other page gave me an out of paper error. Not only did it give me the error, but it beeped 6 times incredibly loudly which irritated me even more. It's like it's yelling at me. There was clearly paper in there and once I opened the drawer and closed it and started it up it would print 1-2 pages and beep again. I even tried manually feeding the paper through because it was thicker and feeding it through the first time did round the pages out, which I think might have been why it couldn't detect the paper (even though I did everything I could to make them nearly 100% flat). Whenever I manually fed the pages through, it would take 1 and then continuously give me a paper jam notice. There was NO paper in the printer because it wouldn't even pull it in before giving the error!! It kept telling me to take out all four drums, remove the paper, and replace them. More than 10 times I removed the drums and started the process over. Nothing. I had to cancel my print job and start it over... once I did this it would take ONE page manually and then on the second page I tried to feed through it would say there was a jam. I am so incredibly ANGRY right now. Now I have to deal with shipping this giant printer back to return it and it is probably going to cost me an arm and a leg. On top of this I am due with my baby this week and I'm trying to get all my business affairs in order before taking time off. I am now going to have to go pay out the ears for professional printing because I got sold a piece of junk. I guess you get what you paid for. I do NOT recommend this printer.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: Good color printing, the three we have don't have any issues jamming. The color toner isn't cheap, but it is cheaper than all the others I've recently checked.

Cons: Toner isn't free

5 out of 5 eggsGreat printer, especially for the price

Pros: Crisp black printing
Nice scanning software (included with all Brother MFC devices)
Linux print drivers

Cons: Starter toner cartridge only half full

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from B/W Brother that I've had for years so very familiar with the product because of that. I've only printed 1 thing in color so far and it looked good but I really like the black text as it seems very crisp and clear even though I have it on toner saver mode.

Like all companies now, they only half fill the "starter" toner cartridges. In the past I'd buy Brother and non-OEM cartridges but on this one I am going to buy the toner and just refill the cartridges myself. You can get everything you need (including reset gears which don't come included) for about $38 online. There are tons of videos on youtube that give you explicit directions. You can also just buy the non-OEM filled cartridges online too for about $65 for the 4 pack.

Although the printer does suck up the juice when it starts, it's actaully better than my older Brother MFC. My old one would kick off the UPS which this one does not do so for me it's an upgrade although if you are use to inkjet you'll be surprised at how loud it is.

I got this working in no time flat on 2 Win7 boxes and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The Brother site has the Linux drivers and directions so it was pretty smooth. I don't think you can use the included scanning software on Linux but I don't have that need so not an issue for me.

For the price I paid ($235) this was a great buy as I've been happy with my Brother laser printers for 10+ years.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Scanner - different brother

Pros: Need to add a little help here. I noticed "NA" complaining about 6-buttons to scan. The Brothers have a great "Control Center" to help with scanning. EVERYTHING is done in three clicks. 1-click -open Control Center, 2-click scan to file (mine is set to assume PDF format), 3-type a name and click SAVE. It's that easy.

Cons: the cheaper they are, the slower they are. I have seen several of the toner door openings broken after only 25k copies on the 200$ B/W models. Heavier doors would be a plus. Separate toner and drum pieces is a downer but, I tell my self "it is for the environment"

Other Thoughts: I am a reseller that has sold many of the B/W models. I can not speak of this model in particular BUT, the Control Panel software is standard Brother stuff. Make sure that you do the "suite" install so that the OCR and PDF features work for you. I am using the Brothers as cheap scanners where the doctor's office was recommended to buy the 700$ HP or Fujitsu's.

2 out of 5 eggsdisappointment

Pros: Print quality is superior. Scan if fast. Price is right. In my previous experience reliability of Brother products is excellent.

Cons: First. Toner live. Promised up to 2200 pages. Fact 594 page before black cartridge need to be replace. Most of this pages - copy of bank checks (actual use = 1/8 to 1/5 page at best!).
Second. Not user friendly interface. To scan each page to computer you have to literally press 6 different buttons to start scan even of you just scanned page seconds ago and no changes been made.
Third. Noisy fan. After you print page fan turns on for 10 min! - it's like tape telephone to your head and force you to hear dial ton for 10 min - it's that laud.

Other Thoughts: I have been using "E***n" brand for a while but after 2 of those died in 3 years I've got Brother. I have been using Brother Inc All In One for 9 years and after it's finally died I've got Brother again - this time Laser expecting to get more copies for less money paid for incs.
My mistake. Not much difference in cartridge live/cost.
But NOISE - unbearable in home office. Maybe in noisy office environment it will go unnoticed.
If after reading this still decide to get this All-In-One get ready to live with this noise for long long time.

2 out of 5 eggsMac OSX 10.8

Pros: The printer seems to be worth the 294.00 when I got it on sale. The fax setup was straight forward and the copier worked right out the gate.

Cons: Mac OSX 10.8 will not work with the CD they send you! Also I was not having any luck downloading the drivers from their website. They would instal but I would still not be able to see the printer. I run parallels 8 so I installed it in windows and they was so easy it was frustrating.

When warming up the printer makes a lot of noise and this isn't my first laser color printer. Maybe something is loose in the printer because it sounds like stuff is coming apart.

Other Thoughts: Print quality is good but nothing to brag about. Very loud when warming up along with funny noises. Doesn't currently work with mac osx 10.8... hopefully we can fix this soon.

for 294.00 I would buy another one for my home office but at full price it just wouldn't be worth it to me.

5 out of 5 eggsHighly functional

Pros: Quality 3 in 1, this thing does not feel cheaply made despite the low price. Uses Control Center 3 management software, highly configurable. Ink is inexpensive. Automatic document feeder works well.

Cons: Once in a while I get a phantom printer jam, curable by simply pressing OK. Printing envelopes in humid weather will seal them shut. You can get around this by folding the lip back around the envelope and feeding it in.

Other Thoughts: You can't beat Brother laser printers for the price.
