1 out of 5 eggsBad Customer Service on DOA printer

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: ???

Cons: The printer never worked, warranty replacement not supplied yet, it's been three weeks.

Other Thoughts: This printer printed a satisfactory test sheet, then presented with a "paper jam" error message during the first print job that would not go away.
I purchased this printer in time to meet an important deadline to no avail. Because the printer was DOA, I missed my deadline.
I contacted Brother tech support who could not resolve the malfunction. I had already done all the recommended troubleshooting to no avail, and the tech couldn't fix the problem, either.
He promised to send a replacement printer. They sent a <gak> REFURBISHED printer to replace a new printer! I immediately contested this as a rip-off.
So, facing my outrage at this cheat, Brother promised, in writing, to send *new* replacement by overnight shipping--as I requested. They actually shipped the replacement more than 24 hours after making this promise, after close of business. It has been two days since it was promised, and it hasn't left the local UPS sorting facility. Based on the tracking information, I won't get it for three more days.
My communications with Brother were horrible. They never sent tracking information until I wanted to know where the replacement printer was. Brother evidently has no problem with cheating a loyal customer (I've used Brother laser printers for decades, & Brother sewing machines) by sending a refurbished printer as a warranty replacement for a new printer that was essentially DOA.
Brother also feels there is nothing wrong with promising a replacement on a time frame they have no intention of meeting. When I brought these multiple issues to their attention, they insisted there was nothing they could do since the printer was en route. They claimed they could not compensate me for "lost time."
I advised them this wasn't about lost time, it was about cheating me by sending a refurbished printer to replace a new printer that never worked, and about lying to me regarding shipping a new replacement overnight. They asked what compensation would I consider.
Okay, I get it. . .so I suggested replacement printer cartridges for the printer. The customer service supervisor actually said "the printer comes with a full set of printer cartridges." She deliberately misinterpreted my request to avoid remedying Brother's wrongs. She ultimately decided that one black replacement printer cartridge would make this aggrieved customer whole.
This aggrieved customer does not agree and, accordingly, uses this forum to advise potential customers that this Brother inkjet printer was essentially DOA and my attempts to have Brother fix this have been totally unsatisfactory. I regret relying on Brother's representations to resolve this issue because it prevented me from seeking alternative remedies that would likely have proven more satisfactory.
I probably should have just returned it to the retailer, but I was already on the phone with Brother tech support and I made the mistake of trusting them to deal with me honestly and fairly. Brother didn't, much to my regret.
See how one really bad incident can ruin years of customer satisfaction? It wipes out all the accumulated goodwill. I understand how a rare defective product can slip through. But Brother's posture of minimizing, cheating and lying makes it appear that their products are not reliable and of substandard quality.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed- Twice

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: Easy to set up
Wireless connectivity
Adjustable scanner settings

Cons: Wireless doesn't always work; sometimes freezes for long periods

After 3 weeks, printer began printing in horizontal "stripes", where it printed some lines of text normally, faded some lines of text in or out, and failed to print other lines of text entirely.
Troubleshooting and cleaning did not help.
Sent it back for an exchange- staff was very helpful and sent a replacement. Replacement did the same after 2 weeks. Contacted support over a week ago with the issue; emailed support again today as I have yet to hear back.

Other Thoughts: I'd wanted a printer with a good scanner so I could import my art easily. After some practice with the adjustable scanner settings I got it down to 3 or 4 scans per drawing to get the desired color on the digital rendition. A USB cable (not included) made transfers from the scanner to the computer much faster, but the included program was somewhat buggy and needed to be restarted with each scan.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: Easy setup. Wireless. Duplex function. High resolution scans. Well built

Cons: It doesn't make coffee!!!

Other Thoughts: Setup is easy despite what other reviewers are saying. If you have setup any wireless devices and have some common sense, it's a no brainer really.

Wireless works just fine. I use the default router from FiOS and it simply works without any hiccups. I have yet to try printing from an app on my android phone but all is well printing and scanning wirelessly to and from the laptop :)

It can actually print double-sided to save some trees!!! In such a small package (relatively speaking), I didn't expect that. So kudos to Brother for this feature!

As you can see from the specs, the scan resolution is really high. The quality matches the pixel count and the clarity is amazing to say the least. Of course the trade off is speed. 300dpi is sufficient for me.

The built quality is excellent as expected from Brother. The printer is heavy and very sturdy. If planned obselescence is not in place, I think this thing will last forever!!

I am sad to report that this printer will not make you coffee. So look else where if that is what you need from a printer...but seriously, can't think of a reason not to buy this if it fits your budget and you have the space.

5 out of 5 eggsBest printer I've ever owned

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: All in one economical printer. I bought it I believe refurbished however to this day it still works! It self cleans as long as you leave it on (sleeping) and you don't have to worry about the heads getting clogged. Best part, and I can't stress this enough is that I can use inks I buy on E Bay for a fraction of retail costs. Yes those china Inks work with this printer! The pictures look great too! I spend less than 20 bucks on 6 refills. I haven't gone through the second one yet and I've had this printer 2 years! Also this printer is wireless and easy to set up onto your wifi.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you want to spend little for something that will save you money on ink, this was it for me. I have not experimented with many inks and I want to note that using other inks is at your own risk. Using off brand inks voids your warranty. Personally I simply wanted a printer that's ink didn't cost more then coke in the 80s. I not only got that, but the pictures look fantastic!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat printer for the price

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: Features
Size
Print Quality
Price of Replacement Ink
Software is easy to install and figure out.
Occasionally will clean the cartridges to keep them from drying out.

Cons: Sometimes a bit tricky to get the wifi setup for more than 1 computer, however I just have it setup via wifi for my one computer and then shared through it.

Other Thoughts: Sometimes the random cleaning scares me in the middle of the night, not sure if their is a way to adjust its schedule.

5 out of 5 eggsI Like my Brother

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: I've had Brothers before, even remanufactured ones and they last so much longer and with less problems than an Epson did. I like my Bother.

Cons: I can't think of one.

Other Thoughts: A couldn't believe what a good deal this was, and had regular size toners added in.

4 out of 5 eggsStudents, Pick this up!

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: Solid construction, no heat output unless in constant use.
Interesting cable design- cables are inserted within the unit rather than on the outside; power cable is non-removable.
Quiet operation when in use.
Minimal power consumption (when Idle).
Sample Ink Cartridges Included (FOR ALL COLORS).
Bottom slot paper tray can hold 100 pages when inserted; simple to adjust initially.
User interface is fairly simple to navigate.
Driver and firmware support are available online.
Does not create an electrical resonance compared to the LaserJet printers Brother manufactures.
Network support via ethernet and WiFi. Network redundancy on this device is not a bad option to consider.

Cons: The supplied sample ink cartridges have an expiration of 6 months from the initial use. Unless you modify your printing needs, do not expect to print more than 250 pages before replacing them.
The device does NOT ship with a USB cable. I suggest you purchase one if setting up the printer via WiFi or Ethernet is not an option.
WiFi connectivity is not consistent. Even when a static IP is set for the device, power cycling must be done to remap and re-detect it on the network before use.
Copying speeds are very slow.
Document feeder is not strong. It has a tendency to jam with certain paper types.
Power cable does not have a separate grounding pin, which is strange, compared to other Brother devices.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: Low price.
Came with starter ink.
Refills not too costly.
Easy install
Made by Brother.

Cons: small paper tray

Other Thoughts: Not enough time using it to test durability. However, it worked great right out of the box. Easy setup and connected right to my wireless.
The paper tray doesn't hold a large stack of paper, so expect to add paper frequently if yo print a lot. I will give it a few runs and see if it warrants a fifth egg.

1 out of 5 eggsDevice not recognized

This review is from: Brother MFC-J450dw 6000 x 1200 dpi USB / Wireless Duplex InkJet MFP Color Printer

Pros: The price and yield per ink cartridge advertised were attractive.

Cons: The printer could not be recognized by any of the office machines by USB.

Other Thoughts: It would really be nice if these printer were actually checked before they went out the door
