1 out of 5 eggsWorst printer I have ever owned

Pros: Cheap

Cons: . Frequent paper jam errors (no jam)
. Cleans itself more than my wifes cat.... I often have to wait for it to clean itself after printing a handful of documents.
. Frequent loud snap/clcking noise. I'm waiting for a piece of something to come flying out.
. Whe a color cartridge runs out, won't print my black faxes.
. Fax log too small to be useful, log fills up and doesn't print faxes if a color cartridge is spent and you are not babysitting the device.
. Tech support.....need I say more.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy it. In fact, don't accept it as a gift either.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst HP printer EVER

Pros: - Sharp and clear print quality
- Reasonably priced
- Ink cartridges are not overly expensive
- Separate print-heads

Cons: - Frequently fails to feed
- All ink levels drop rapidly despite having printed just 200 pages mostly black pages.

Other Thoughts: I purchased my original printer from Newegg and had a wonderful "honeymoon" with the printer. After about 3 months it started to occasionally fail to feed. Despite having cleaned it several times I still could not get this printer to feed. After having it for nearly a year I contacted HP for help and ended up RMAing it. The replacement printer worked great up until it started to fail to feed as well. Removing the drop tray and trying to print something shows the arm dropping but the wheels not moving, then the arm retracts while the printer continues to TRY to feed for the next 30 or so seconds.

I've been a loyal HP customer over the past 15 years having purchased 5 HP printers, 1 digital camera, 1 19" crt monitor, and 2 HP computers, as well as 5 or more calculators, but now I have to question whether I should just find another manufacturer for my printer needs or not.

Poor quality and support seems to be the norm with most manufactures over the last decade and that's just

2 out of 5 eggsHP 8500

Pros: Enjoyed the duplex printing abilities. Paper handling worked well although I feared foul ups with all the monkey motion involved.

Cons: I had the printer 6 months and all of a sudden the print queue started acting up. Print one document maybe and then to print more the printer had to be unplugged and plugged back in. 4 calls to tech support and then 4+ calls to HP escalations. It appears they are going for a refund at some level. Hope it's a full refund. Tried much to fix. Nothing seemed to help even after printer replacement. HP was good about the replacement requirements. Wish we could have found a solution.

Other Thoughts: I have used HP Laserjet IIIP, Officejet V40xi and now the 8500A. Good printers. The others lasted 10+ years. Hope the technology evolves to promote this level of endurance in the future.

1 out of 5 eggsPAPER JAM !?!?!?

Pros: While it worked, things were great...

Cons: Right at 2 years old, with minimal use, the machine gets these "Paper Jam" errors, but there is no paper anywhere inside. Google this unit with "Paper Jam" and you'll literally see hundreds of users with the same problem. Once this machine gets that "Paper Jam" error msg, it's toast. No more printing, scanning.. Nothing. And there is NO WAY to correct this.

Other Thoughts: Can't believe HP put out a product like this, with absolutely no way to fix this error. Sad :\

1 out of 5 eggsHP ain't what it used to be

Pros: Does everything, better cost per page than most.

Cons: Manufacturing has really suffered and quality control is gone. Can't print ANYTHING if any one of the cartridges is empty. Scan speed is slower than I need. No dedicated envelope feed.

Other Thoughts: As a consultant, I've purchased a dozen of these in the last 6 months, most from Sams Club. I'm experiencing a failure rate of about 33%, including my own. I bought 3 of them in one day because the first 2 failed out of the box. Now I'm looking at my own printer which has a pool of cyan ink in the bottom and it refuses to recognize new cartridges. This printer is about 10 months old. I used to recommend these printers to my clients for the low cost of printing, but the high failure rates I've personally experienced are going to make me a Dell or Epson or Canon guy. What good is a printer that won't?

2 out of 5 eggsMajor Feed Problems

Pros: It's great printer, when it works. Beautiful images, wonderful documents, etc.

Cons: Continuous feed problems are the worst of any problem. You have to babysit it to be sure the paper actually feeds from the tray. The roller arm doesn't always drop and when it does, it leaves skid marks on the paper. I ended up doing a RMA on it after less than a year and only ended up with the replacement AIO doing the exact same thing after a few months.

Other Thoughts: My recommendation on this particular product family by HP, avoid it. The headaches involved make it far more expensive than a comparable printer by any of HP's competitors. I've been a loyal HP customer for 15 years and purchased five printers, two computers, and a digital camera during this time. This is the first time I have ever had to RMA a printer to them and then have the replacement do the same thing as the original.

2 out of 5 eggsCan't print B&W if any color cartridge is empty !!! . . . and every startup takes so longgggggggggggg

Pros: hmmm . . . it does work with mass quantities of cartridges

Cons: I just installed a new extended black cartridge for B&W copy functions for which I don't need color. But when I press the B&W copy button for a strictly black and white copy it reports that it won't perform my B&W copy task until I put in a new color cartridge !!!

Other Thoughts: There should be an easy override for doing B&W copies or printing so that we printer owners determines our acceptable print quality. Instead, I am being held hostage by HP to buy a product that I don't need.

Hey HP profit minded genius, I will now recommend against any further HP printer purchases after being exclusive to HP.

Trivia Question: HP "profit-minded-genius" -did you come from the design team that created the Vega or Pinto?

1 out of 5 eggsSupport lies -- NOT compatible with Server OS

Pros: Typical HP -- does a fine job of putting ink to paper once you get the drivers right.

Cons: Despite the name, this printer should NOT be used in an office environment! Download the drivers listed for Windows Server OSes and the installer will plainly tell you that you don't have an appropriate OS (they kindly list all of the current Microsoft CLIENT OSes, just in case you didn't already know them.)

OH, and if you call HP support, Dave (real name Habib) will tell you that you should re-download the software & try again... he'll happily walk you through click-by-click to get the same file!). When that fails, you should reboot your server (who cares about any users) and try again. When that fails, he'll send you a link to re-download the software (same file name -- they assume you have the intelligence of a coconut) and try again. Repeat as long as you have the patience to do so...

Long story short, they don't have a driver that will work with a Server OS. So plug it into your network and load the drivers on your client systems. And no printing from your server itself.

Other Thoughts: This experience is typical of HP in recent years. They have taken a stellar reputation for printers and run it cleanly and efficiently right into a ditch!

1 out of 5 eggsAwful AIO unit

Pros: Nice design of Panel Buttons

Cons: Everything.... Software will not install other than Driver... Leaves streaks when printing pictures, other than Best of High Quality mode which uses a ton of ink.... I could buy 4 of these units in a year based on what I would spend in ink...

Other Thoughts: This is a horrible unit... HP Support was of no help when trying to get the Bloatware/Software to install... Hp Forums will show this unit has had and still has many issues....!!!

2 out of 5 eggsBegan with such promise....

Pros: AIO features galore. When the software works it works well.

Cons: The bloated HP software package that is necessary for access to all parts of the printer is extremely buggy. ANY problem is met with HP support requesting you do a full level 4 uninstall (roughly 2~3 hour uninstall process) followed by a complete reinstall (45 minutes). Currently been running into the dreaded 'No Scan Options found' error that is followed by a request to reinstall the Solution Center.

Other issues include fast degradation of the rubber pickup rollers causing numerous paper jams. Occasionally the printer decides to do a full Printhead cleaning, burning through ink.

Additionally, the HP Software only offers a PCL driver and causes extreme slow downs whenever printing from the Adobe Reader software.

Other Thoughts: With over 50 units deployed in the field, I dread this printer and all it's numerous hang ups. Save yourself the hassle and get a nice laserjet unit and a small AIO for your needs.
This model and the previous model (L7780) have been riddled with problems. I will be avoiding HP AIO printers at all costs.
