1 out of 5 eggsNo Win8 support

Pros: Produces excellent 4x6 dye sub prints. An excellent obsolete product.

Cons: Canon has decided to pull the plug on this excellent printer. There are no drivers available for Windows 8 and Canon has no plans to provide any.

When a company stops supporting its products it time to stop buying that companies products. No more Canon products for me, EVER.

5 out of 5 eggsworks well for photobooth

Pros: Was pretty bullet-proof as a printer for a DIY photobooth for our wedding recently.
The little LCD screen tells you when either the color cartridge or the paper needs to be replaced. Was simple enough that our wedding guests were able to swap these out as the night went on.

Cons: For the price, none.

Other Thoughts: We just put some gaffer tape over the controls so no one messed with the settings.

Worked with Sparkbooth on a laptop running win 7.

5 out of 5 eggsInstalling on Windows 8

Pros: It is possible to Install on Windows 8 by using the following steps:

Click Change PC Settings

Click General

Scroll down and click Advanced Startup

Click Restart now. The computer will restart to a startup menu

Click on Troubleshoot

Click on Advanced options

Click on Startup Settings

Click Restart

The computer will restart and prompts another menu to choose. One of the options is to Disable driver signature enforcement.

Once this is done plug in the printer with a USB cable

Press and hold the Windows key and the "X" key to launch the Windows 8 Menu and click Device Manager

Under Other devices, right click the printer and click Update Driver Software

Click Browse my computer for driver software and then click Browse going to the contents of the cd in the driver folder

Click Install this driver software anyway

Once the driver installs the device will appear under printers.

Also note that once the driver is installed you can then install then install the printer for use wirelessly

Cons: None once installed

Other Thoughts: The other software that comes with the printer I believe needs to be run in Windows 7 compatability.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible Windows 8

Pros: Small and relatively inexpensive dye sub printer especially for machine quality photos

Cons: "Thank you for your E-mail inquiry regarding your SELPHY CP900.
Regrettably, your product will not be supported in the Windows 8 operating
systems. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
I did talk to them as well

Other Thoughts: Canon should not list that the software is compatible with Windows 8, if there will never be a driver

1 out of 5 eggsWindows 8 users forget it

Pros: Unknown. The printer is incomparable with Windows 8.

Cons: I use Windows 8. There are no drivers for this printer that will work with Windows 8. The technical support person told me that they might develop drivers in the future, but that they may not. He said I could return the printer to the seller, but that Canon would not stand behind the product. I received the printer for Xmas and will try to find out where it was purchased (presumably not Newegg).

Other Thoughts: One would expect that Canon would be up to date with drivers. Windows 8 was not a surprise. Every vendor had access to the information they needed to provide drivers. This is a huge disappointment in that company.

3 out of 5 eggsGood prints, but pricey

Pros: Good print quality (300x300 dye sublimation)
Fast (~45 seconds per print)
Small footprint
Wifi connected
SD and USB ports
Free Canon iPhone, iPad, and Android apps

Cons: Comes with only 5 prints worth of "ink" and paper.
Costly per-print price.
Interface is okay, but could be better.
Sensitive to dust.

Other Thoughts: Got this as a gift as normally I wouldn't buy something like this. Setup was reasonably easy. Needless to say, I'm impressed with the print quality. I've printed on professional dye-sublimation printers 15+ years ago, but never ones this small. It's a decent little printer if you want to print photos at home. Naturally, the prints will only be good if the original photo is good. If you use a mediocre digital photo, you'll get mediocre results. That said, I printed some sharp 5MP and 8MP images and they came out really well.

Now for the caveats.

The interface is decent, but takes a little getting used to. All in all, I had no trouble figuring it out, but a less technically savvy person might need some hand holding before they get the hang of it. Still, I think they did a good job considering how small this printer is.

The first photo I printed had blobs of cyan and magenta in the middle of the photo. Upon closer inspection, there were tiny little dust particles in the center of each blob. All subsequent photos came out fine when I made certain to keep the paper and surrounding area free of hair/dust.

Each print is rather pricey. The printer comes with only 5 prints worth of paper and "ink" (dye). A normal ink cartridge will print 36 prints! What the heck, Canon? That's just mean. You'd think they would include at least 18 prints worth...

A pack of print material for this printer goes for $35 which contains 108 prints worth of material. If you figure that you'll probably botch 8 prints, that means each 4x6 print is 35 cents. (Though, if you factor in the cost of the printer, it's more like $1.15 each. Yikes!)

In comparison to your local print shop or pharmacy, you can usually get 4x6 prints for under 20 cents each.

App for iPhone is decent. Didn't try the iPad or Android app. Would be nice if there was an app for Windows Phone.

I took off an egg for the costly per-print price and a 1/2 an egg for the measly 5 starter prints (only 5? I still can't get over that) and 1/2 an egg for the trickiness in setup for non-technically savvy people.
