2 out of 5 eggsCould have been great

Pros: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus is easy to install in any typical configuration (wired network, wireless network, or USB).

The printer sips ink and prints quickly.

Text and graphics are both excellent.

Print cartridges are fairly priced, and the cost-per-page is comparatively low.

Cons: I have *never* had a problem with paper jams. However, my unit typically has problems picking up photo paper or card stock (both HP-brand, no less).

Envelope printing is a train wreck. Just forget it. Even standard #10 business envelopes require such a wide left margin that the printed envelope looks terrible. HP needs to improve its drivers, but that will likely never happen, of course. My solution? I have to keep an old HP DeskJet 6940 connected to use as a dedicated envelope printer. Thanks so much, HP.

If you want to use the printer with Linux, good luck. I have had little success, even with the latest hplip download. It's fine for printing standard 8.5 x 11 pages. Forget scanning, and scan-to-computer isn't even an option.

Other Thoughts: I would think twice about buying this model if you intend to print pictures or homemade greeting cards. This printer seems to have trouble pulling anything heavier than standard 20 lb paper out of the tray.

Why do printer manufacturers still have lousy Linux support for these all-in-one printers? Support your products!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Printer

Pros: It will do everything as well as connect any way you wish. I bought mine through HP as they had a $100.00 off deal and have loved it. Be sure and get the XL cartridges to get the best value for your ink.

Cons: So far none. The software installed flawlessly on my network and five different PC's can access it. It would be great if when one tray empties it would automatically select the other, but then on is intended for legal size paper.

Other Thoughts: This makes my third 8000 series printer connected to my network and each new generation is better than the next. I like the 8600 because it no longer uses a "brick" power supply. The power cord now plugs directly in the printer. While nothing has yet compared to my LaserJet 4, it is not color but over a million pages over a decade later and has never needed anything more than toner. Speaking of which, always buy OEM; the same applies to the ink cartridges.

1 out of 5 eggs4 new printers, 4 failed printers

Pros: If it worked, it would be a GREAT printer...

Cons: Very disappointed. After 4 different printers in 2 weeks (each one lasted less than 3 days before problems arose), we have given up on HP for our business. We quit buying HP printers a few years ago because of quality problems. We let ourselves be talked back into trying their new 'top of the line' 8600. The first one had scanning/faxing problems after about 2 days (a line down the middle of the page). The second printer had the same exact problem. The third printer could not successfully set up because of print head issues and the forth started squeaking loudly after about 2 days. 4 new printers, four bad fails...

Needless to say we are looking into other printers and definitely NOT HP. To their credit they replaced them as they failed, but 4 for 4 ! We stopped the loss there when they offered to send the 5th printer out. HP quality used to be the best, but our experience the last few years puts them way down the list. A few years ago I wouldn't look at any other brand for a printer. Now I will no longer look at HP.

Other Thoughts: I understand that HP is a large company, but although they did to their credit send replacements, I was a little disappointed in the 'canned approach' to the problem. After 4 failures in a row (in less than 2 weeks), it seems like they would have wanted to look into this problem a little more. I understand statistics being what they are, not likely to happen, but still a little disappointed.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: reasonably fast, good print quality, lots of bells and whistles, individual ink tanks

Cons: sometimes inconsistent duplex printing, setup a bit complex (not for your average home user; I found setup a bit tedious and in some parts backwards and I've been working with printers since the LaserJet II was state-of-the-art)

Other Thoughts: I bought it from Woot for a steal of a price, but would buy again even at a higher price (but not full retail price)

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This printer is fast and and accurately prints in both black/white and color. It seems to be very frugal on ink usage which is good since the cartridges cost an arm and a leg.

Cons: Unfortunately for such a good machine the software is garbage and very difficult to set up. I have had to reset it up several times. It will work well for a while and then it will refuse to work and it has to be set up again. I have not been able to get the scan function to work correctly in over 6 months. I have set it up as USB, ethernet and wireless and have had the same problems with all three.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent printer, economical and fast

Pros: Wireless connectivity was a snap, auto-duplexing works flawlessly. Print speed is very fast. The tilt out screen is great, plus the bright-white LED inside the case is a great idea that helps when loading cartridges. The touch screen is useful and lets you customize all sorts of things without the need to have the computer on. Copying is fast, as in scanning. HP ePrint from apple iOs devices is seamless.

Cons: I can't call it a serious con, but the touch screen does not respond to the same touch on all locations. Sometimes a finger tap does it, other times it needs a finger nail tap. Not hard to use. If you can't figure out a touch screen, don't buy this printer...

Other Thoughts: This printer is huge. I under estimated its size and now we need to get a table to put it on as it no longer fits on our desk. It's fairly quiet in operation, and it makes nice little noises when you tap things on the touch screen.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat All-In-One

Pros: Amazing at conserving ink. I can not believe how much $ I am saving on ink as compared to my Canon Pixma printer which I had previously. The ADF actually works, and the software allows you to scan multiple pages into PDF format as an attachment to emails - cheaper than FAX'ing documents.
Photo's using plain paper are quite acceptable.
I don't why there are complaints about the touch pad. I found it quite sensitive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The only possible complaint - not actually a "CON" - which I have is the ablility to accept a FAX on the HP OfficeJet by punching "25" on my portable phone.
Canon had this feature.

5 out of 5 eggsHP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

Pros: Best AIO available. Ink cartridges last much, much longer (3X's) than the HP photosmart AIO's. AND the photoprints are almost as good as the HP Photosmarts. Double sided printing. Huge input paper tray. I like everything about this printer.

Cons: The setup/installations instructions could be a lot better! The instructions assume that everyone is familiar with HP touchscreens. Swipe your finger across the screen folks in order to move the items.

Other Thoughts: The ink cartridges are expensive but the usage really is minimal compared to any other printer or AIO I have ever had & I've had many over the years. I have not installed the WiFi features because I do not need them. Therefore, this review does not address those features.
