1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute garbage -DO NOT BUY!!

Pros: None.

Cons: Everything is a con with this trash printer. Sloooww printing, and I mean sllloooowwww. Constant paper jams! Sub-standard and confusing software (and I am a Comp-Sci grad). Oh and the "best" of all, you cannot print with only black ink if even 1 of the color cartridges is empty! So basically this is a worthless piece of garbage, atay away, HP has gone downhill with sub-standard products and practices which hurt the consumer.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk - ZERO eggs

Pros: I can't really think of any at the moment...

Cons: Disgustingly slow and buggy software on the printer. When powering on, it takes over 2 minutes to boot. Loses WIFI connection at times and/or it will not wake up when I print from across my WIFI network.

Other Thoughts: I have had this printer now for about 14 months or so. I bought it at Staples. I just now had the need to copy 2 separate pages. I tapped 'Copy' on the touchscreen, loaded my document (no alignment markings) and hit copy. I pick B/W copy and after about 10-15 seconds I get a B/W copy. OK it worked, but then the unit proceeded to spin on the screen stuck on "Copying 1 of 1" stuck in some stupid loop or something. II could hear the hardware inside clunking around just lost. I tried to be patient, finally after several minutes I tap 'Cancel' and then it spins for several minutes stuck on "Copying Canceled...", again stuck in some loop. I can hear the hardware clanking around non stop. After unplugging and restarting (2 minute cold boot min) I was able to tap 'Copy' again and print my second page, to the same result. Now here I am writing you this with the hope I can get at least one person to NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. Did it copy, technically. I have had similar problems with scanning. I would give 0 eggs if I could. Just don't do it.

2 out of 5 eggsReliability

Pros: Nice color printing
Many functions

Cons: Poor software
Reliability is a problem. They don't last very long.
Tech support is marginal and they aren't anxious to honor their warranty. But they will, if you are persistent.
Too much plastic

Other Thoughts: Overall, it could be a great printer, when new.
Prints well and has a lot of versatility. But don't expect to own one for a long time. They could use a little better build quality. If they built them better, even at a small price increase, it would be an attractive product.

4 out of 5 eggsNow that's an HP!

Pros: I bought this Printer to replace a J4680 printer that I have been having trouble with since I got it, yes also HP! But I have been using HP for more than ten years and because one model didn't work well for me doesn't mean that I'm going to change. This HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium is so far the best HP that I've bought from HP and I love the software program it doesn't have the other program (Photosmart Essentials 3.5)that gave me trouble with my other printer. But I still love my HP printers!!

Cons: The only Con. is the being able to pick which drawer to put the envelops in, it's the top drawer by default.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Printer!

Pros: This is my third HP printer and it works as described and I especially like that it didn't have the same software suite that the previous printers had. Setup was easy and I truly like the features on this printer.

Cons: No cons yet! will write back with an update after I've used it for a while.

Other Thoughts: I really had to get another printer, the previous printers software suite gave me a lot of trouble on a Win.7 system. So I'll give that one to one of my relatives.

1 out of 5 eggsNOT an OFFICE Printer

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: This is not an Office quality or functional printer. It is limited to Letter Size paper for all but simplex manual print and scanning (Single sided manual operation).
Does not auto detect paper in the auto sheet feeder within the scanning software.
Does not duplex any paper sizes except 8"x11" - any odd sizes within this format cannot be duplexed.
Cannot scan mixed mode paper sizes
Cannot print mixed mode page sizes
Will not print from second tray without manual selection PRIOR to the print job
Draft Print (to save costly ink) is lousy quality compared to previous HP Officejet models forcing use of higher ink usage of Normal, or Best for reasonable results.
Scan software has reduced functionality and has a number of usability issues that cause additional steps (not Office Friendly)
ADF (automatic document feeder) does not have tray or catch bin for any paper larger than letter size. Pushing larger pages onto the floor.
Touch screen has reduced functionality from previous version and has mis-calibrated touch areas which push in in to the video help mode wasting time.

Other Thoughts: In discussion with HP regarding the reduced functionality of the 8600 over previous Officejet models (8500, 73xx, etc) their response is that HP only includes the functionality that customers want which is based on complaints.... This is a horrible way to run a product development process - Produce the cheapest thing you can based upon complaints.... Come on HP where’s the innovation, the fulfillment of common office needs...
I have been an HP printer and other device purchaser for more than 20 yrs and if this is the level of product development HP will deliver, then obviously, HP is on a dead end road....

Sounds like customers need to react loudly or leave....

5 out of 5 eggsLove the Printer, Scanner, Copier, Fax

Pros: Purchased one of these for myself and another brand for My Wife. The HP blows away the competition. She is always sneaking into my office just to use this Multi-Function Printer. It prints great. The ink seems to last much longer I expected. It copies well. Full function Fax. Scanning is great. It is simply a solid "work-horse". I love the Direct Wireless Printing Option where I can print from my smartphone directly to the printer without having to install the printer on the network.

Cons: The only con is with copying. Pages the have been stapled sometimes need to be smoothed-out to prevent it from pulling more than one page at a time; however, it really is a minor issue. For large print jobs we have an industrial size color printer.

Other Thoughts: It came with far more options than I could have imagined. Easy setup. My Wife finally threw up her hands and had me purchased another for her. We moved her multi-function printer to the Server. Cost of ink seems to be less than for other brands especially with as little as it seems to use. Scan photographs, run them through photo editing program and upload to FaceBook. Does a great job. Last, for minimal investment, updated the I.R.I.S. to the full-blown premium version. Easy to install with printer.

5 out of 5 eggsFully Featured and Cost-Effective

Pros: The pigment-based ink is a great middle-ground between laser and inkjet. It doesn't smear, and is fast whilst being cheap.

Full-duplex is a really nice feature that I now can use all the time.

Scan-to-network drive is perfect for my NAS, and direct email scans are exactly what I need to replace all fax functionality.

The ink is very long-lasting. Cost per page is less than both lasers and inkjets.

Surprisingly, the software that comes with it is very lightweight, and anything above and beyond the drivers is not needed. All the configuration can be done through a web interface - a software-bloat-hater's dream.

Sharing a printer on the network has never been easier. No longer do I have to have my computer running all the time as a print server - it is just always there ready to receive. This saves me so much power each month.

Registering an email address with HP allows you to send prints to the printer from any device, and from anywhere in the world. It's quite a nice feature.

Cons: This is NOT a printer for pictures. The ink just wasn't designed for it anyway, and the printer prints so fast it does leave some lines in a full-sized picture.

The email print-from-anywhere feature prints the email, too. It's unfortunate because it's usually empty when I use it (other than the signature). It will also only print certain documents. I have only tested it with PDFs, but that's usually what I have to print anyway.

Other Thoughts: The price-tag for the ink cartridges seems high, but look at the fine print - they'll do 1500 pages rather than your usual 400 from an inkjet. That's on par with lasers, and for about half the cost of the toner cartridges.

5 out of 5 eggsAll I need

Pros: Finally an all in one that actually works. Copy, scan, print and fax. The fax only works if you have a land line. The ink lasts a long time. Had an HP printer that had a major drinking problem. 24lb recycled paper works great, not one jam yet.

Cons: Ink is still expensive but does last a long time.

Other Thoughts: I had the 8600 pro with one tray. Two trays make it faster to have different papers ready.

5 out of 5 eggsVersatile MF

Pros: Easy set up and easy to use. Wireless connectivity to multiple devices. Does print, copy, scan and fax. Interface is relatively easy to use. Print speed is fast.

Cons: A bit large. Would like higher resolution for some of my applications.

Other Thoughts: Replaced an older MF that had been a workhorse in my home office. This is a much more useful and easy to use replacement. It seems to be a good choice for my application.
