Full feature X-Fi on the cheap

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cheapest member of the true X-Fi family.
Cons: Lacks X-Ram
Other Thoughts: Contrary to what some other individual's reviews on newegg say, this IS a true X-Fi card and DOES support EAX 5.0. This card directly replaced the XtremeMusic in the X-fi line up, which has been cause for some confusion. It is the XtremeAudio which is the crippled card that offers no hardware acceleration.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Easy hookup, great price and very LOUD!!!! lol
Cons: None, for me.
Other Thoughts: For those that are having issues with Vista....... DO NOT load anything from the CD that you receive with this card! Go to the Creative website and download the Vista drivers and other software. Mine works perfectly and the tons of settings make it even more outstanding.

Decent performance on the cheap

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I bought this at $50 (rather than the usual, double that) because I wanted to use my front audio jacks on my Antec 1200 without the static associated with using on-board sound. I can't speak for the other differences, but I hear zero static now. Excellent.
Cons: Nope
Other Thoughts: Takes a while to install and update the associated software, but once it's done it's all good.

Great sound card!! Works GREAT on win7 x64

white Reviewed By: on 12/1/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: I don't know where to start, this card is just amazing! Especially for the price. I picked it up used off another site, but the egg has a decent price on this and it is 100% worth the full retail price.
Creative Software allows a multitude of adjustments, including individual volume adjustment for each speaker, EAX effects, CMSS (varying levels) and a very nice EQ.
EQ on this card is better than the one in the $150 2004 era Shelf system I am running off it.
PCI-- I only have 2 PCI-E slots and I am reserving those for higher-demand cards such as ATSC tuners or Wireless N.
Optical port. For those who do not know, this card DOES have a Toslink optical audio port. The port is shared with the microphone/line in 3.5mm jack on the rear panel. The connection is not a standard Toslink but rather a "mini toslink" Adapters can be had for approximately $4 to attach to your home theater. The design of this optical port allows the card to be low profile to fit into HTPC's
Cons: Creative Software- Yes I listed it as a pro and a con. While the software is very useful to me and does not seem to bog my system down, some users may experience this as has been stated in other reviews. I am running a mid range system (dual 3.0 2 gig ddr2, win7 x64) and am having no problems. Software is definitely "bloatware" weighing in at just over 120 megabytes, but like I said, the amazing adjustability makes it worth it.
Only HD audio for front panel- This card only supports HD audio on its front header, and there is no way around it. My case only supports AC 97 (yes, my case is new, it is a current year model from Raidmax) so the "plug sensing" doesnt work(my rear speakers do not mute when I plug in headphones), however it is still possible to use headphones and a mic since the software allows you to mute the rear jacks manually.
Other Thoughts: I listen both on my mid size shelf system (seperate woofers and tweeters) as well as a pair of Sennheiser Cx-300 earbuds, and soon to be a pair of Sennheiser HD201 headphones. Not the highest end as far as equipment goes, but let me tell you, this sound card makes my $20 earbuds sound like my $1000 home theater system. The ability to tweak bass, mids, and treble individually is paramount if you use lower end equipment that may be lacking in one of these areas. Bass on my earbuds is especially impressive, almost sounding like a dedicated subwoofer. I think that this card and the $20 pair of headphones I own outperforms bose on an iPod.

Works in WIndows 7 and i7

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: I was worried about Windows 7 64 bit, but it worked right out of the box. I disabled Windows update, and downloaded JUST the driver (Dated June 09).
Hooked up the HD header to it, and I've got speakers and headphones working dynamically.
Vast sound improvement!
Cons: -They need to include the latest Windows 7 drivers and software in the package. Unsuspecting buyers may install the 'XP' drivers instead.
-Documentation could have told me where the header pins were to connect to the front panel. I had to google.
-Software/bloatware is junk and may bloat your OS. I don't need yet another auto-updater running in the background.
Other Thoughts: I decided over this one rather that than the $160 PCI-Express, because I might as well use the vacant PCI slot on my stock mobo. This way I can preserve the space on my single-Gpci slot for a fatter dual GPU next time.
This is just a thought in space management if you don't have a higher end mobo with multiple more slots.
I figure this soundcard plays just as well as the more expensive Xfi. X-Ram is nice on the higher-end, but frankly, performance improvement will be negligible.
So, this is a GREAT buy for it's pricepoint at $60 to $70. Save your money for a quicker or 2nd HDD or something. I won't have to upgrade my sound card for a long while.
Those with driver issues, please download the latest from the website. Jun 09 - six months...so what? It works! - and even considering they put out Win7 64 bit drivers before the OS was even released in Oct.
I didn't install any of the software(bloatware);the drivers are all you need to keep your system running and optimized.
