5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Linux

Comments: I bought this device for its Toslink (SPDIF) input and output. It works under Linux (kernel 2.6.8 & alsa). There is even a switch on the side that lets you bypass the internal mixer. Not bad for the price.

3 out of 5 eggs

Comments: Owned one of these things for about 6 months and it worked well for the amount of abuse it took. However now the volume control for the headphones has been damaged in such a way that the right channel will drop off if you try to ajust the volume. The conclusion I've reached is that you need a good soundcard for and at-home computer, this is what you want to get; but if your looking for something you can travel with you will be better off looking elseware

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but terrible software!

Comments: The card is about equal to a Soundblaster Live in sound quality, which is OK but not anything to get excited about. In games hardware 3D and EAX took a huge performace hit. The drivers that came on the disk did not even work, and when the heck is Creative going to figure out that most people don't want a dozen other apps installed with the driver? Luckily Windows XP has a driver for USB soundcards that works fine with all features.

The only redeeming features the card has is optical in/out and an SPDIF switch, which are both very important to me. The price is reasonable too. If you can live with the minor annoyances and need a cheap USB card with optical in/out, then go for it.
