4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the money...

Pros: Cheap price, 24/96 compatibility, really good sound for the money.

Cons: Somewhat clumsy interface; controls to switch to 24/96 should be easier to find (see below).

Other Thoughts: Make sure you do a FULL installation of the software; you can then go into Control Panel to change the sampling settings and unlock the full potential of this card!

2 out of 5 eggsbad card

Pros: no pros. got the card at a nother store. it was fine for about 2 hour. went to play my game and the 3d sound is very bad sound like your in outer space. took out the driver and the software is not much. restart window and window would not restart.had to redo window xp what a pain.put back in my sound blaster live 5.1 with audigy driver work great again.

Cons: it not emu10k chip. music and game run in 16 bit not 24 bit. bad driver even the update driver did not help. no help from creative at all.

Other Thoughts: if you can get the old sound blaster live 5.1 get it and use the audigy driver package.

3 out of 5 eggsLinux users beware

Pros: Works fine in Windows, as all soundcards do.

Cons: Watch out, this soundcard doesn't have the EMU10K1/2 chipset and its newer counterparts in Audigy 2 ZS which is fully supported in Linux along with hardware mixing.

Other Thoughts: If you're planning to use Linux and don't know how to set up a software mixing system on your computer, get SB Live! 5.1 or the original Audigy cards which have the EMU10K1/2 chips and can do hardware mixing.

5 out of 5 eggsCant Go Wrong With Creative

Pros: Great sound, 8 channel

Cons: Port for mic is colored blue?!

Other Thoughts: One of the things I forgot to get when I first built my computer was a sound card. After a while, my onboard sound went bad and began producing a high pitch noise when playing games. With this card I no longer have the hissing noise of my onboard sound. This card is great and my music is clear and full on my 2.1 speakers and gaming headset. Not to mention that this has 8 channels, unlike my onboard sound, which will allow the option for me to upgrade 7.1 speakers in the future. The only thing that I thought was weird is that the port for the mic was colored blue which threw me off. Just look at the little icons near each port to figure which they are.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: Awesome and cheap card. It's amazing how much improvement this card provides over integrated audio. Program comes with a graphic equalizer and cool sound effects for games and stuff (EAX). Cheap too! And comes with a shiny sticker.

Cons: none!

Other Thoughts: Anything else is grossly overpriced! Get this now!

5 out of 5 eggsSchweet

Pros: The card its selt works great, installation was a snap. Diddn't bother using the software on the CD, but the drivers work fine. Not a whole lot of extras on this card, but if sound is all you need, its great.

Cons: Not alot of "extra" features

3 out of 5 eggsiffy

Pros: used to have great sound quality

Cons: sound is bad with the experience i had with it after a month or so.

Other Thoughts: i installed this back in aug. and all was fine. nice crisp sound coming from my 2.1 desktop speakers with subwoffer. i had to reformat windows cause i got a virus in my computer i couldnt get rid of and ever since then i have had nothing but problems with this card. everytime i go to play music or even games, it skips and it gets really annoying. i tried the drivers from the cd and the website and nothing works.
heres my specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 Rev 2
512MB Kingston 333MHz PC 2700
Gigabyte GeForce FX5200 128MB vid card
this sound card

5 out of 5 eggsThis is sick.

Pros: Great Sound, Inexpensive, Easy installation.

Cons: Installation CD could be better, too many bundled APPS.

Other Thoughts: I work at home as a freelance programmer, and listen to music all day. I just built a brand new system using a K8V SE deluxe. It has the SoundMAX onboard audio, and a set of cheapo JBL speakers made for Compaq (very cheap). Since I listen to music all day, I decided it was time to upgrade my sound a bit. So I bought the Logitech X-530 surround speakers. I was going to call it a day, but newegg recommended this relatively inexpensive card. So I thought, hmmm, thats a good idea, and bought it too. Well, this card showed up before the speakers, so I installed it with the cheap speakers I already had.

WOW

I was shocked at the sound coming out of the old $x speakers. Literally amazed. Then I found the setting to go from 48khz sampling and 16bit, to 96khz and 24 bit. Now Im speechless. If you dont think there's much difference between onboard a decent card, you are in for a suprise. I cant wait for the speakers to show up.

2 out of 5 eggsArchangel

Comments: The reason I give a poor rating is the lack of good solid drivers and false advertising. I have the retail box and it claims to support halo, UT2k4, and the such but if you enable hardware sound in the games you'll get crackle and pops and missing sound. The drivers that came with it destroyed my installation of windows (random restarts) and reformated twice trying to get them to work. DON'T INSTALL THE ONES ON THE CD! download the current ones from the creative website. The updated ones still don't fix the crackle/pop issue in games though.
