Experience audio from your desktop computer like never before with the SND-P8CH sound card from Sabrent. The card has both analog audio outputs for up to 7.1 surround sound systems and an optical 7.1-channel digital S/PDIF output for playback of Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES DVD soundtracks with 24-bit resolution at 96KHz sampling rates. It also supports Dolby Digital Live, which converts any audio signal into a Dolby Digital bitstream for playback through a home-theater system via a single cable.

There's an analog line-in jack for recording from music equipment, CD players and digital audio players directly to your PC. An external input lets you connect a microphone for recording sound or for video conferencing, gaming or Internet phone calls or chat.

Installation is simple and straightforward. 5 out of 5 eggsTricky but fantastic...

Pros: Bought this to finally bring 5.1 optical to my home theatre pc/ music collection...Was a bit tricky...Needed some additional software to get the DT and Dolby Digital to playback...But now I can toss the DVD player...Very very very happy...

Cons: Was a bit worried with these reviews but you can make this card work for you if you have some knowledge of drivers/codecs and do some digging...

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than Creative for the price

Pros: Easily detected by ALSA in my MythTV box and audio is great.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Default frequency in MythTV was set to 32KHz and audio was terrible - fixed by setting to 48KHz. Oops.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Flexibility

Pros: Very flexible and easy to configure. Interface for the user is intuitive and to the point.

Cons: The optical cable that is included is odd on one end requiring the buyer to still invest in a matched-sided cable to connect to most standard receivers.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for MythTV HTPC

Pros: I use this card in a Linux MythTV HTPC. It is easily detected and very little configuration is needed to get the optical output working. All that you have to do is go to alsamixer and turn it on. I use the optical out to my Sony receiver and it sounds amazing.

Cons: There is no connector for external sound connectors that most ATX cases have these days. It comes with a weird optical cable that is useless in most home theater setups.

Other Thoughts: If you are a hardcore gamer this is probably not what you want. If you are building a mythtv system this is the perfect sound card: easily detectable in alsa, easy to configure, and has optical out to go to your receiver.

4 out of 5 eggsdecent cheap card

Pros: It's cheap, supports A3D and EAX which make my games run faster.

Cons: The driver always forgets the 'mic boost' setting. It ignores when games set the option. The only way to turn it on is to use the Control Panel icon or volume control to turn off the mic boost and then turn it back on. I don't understand why the option isn't on by default on all sound cards. I've never used a mic that didn't need mic boost.

Other Thoughts: I'm running version 5.12.01.0046.5.1 of the reference driver from www.cmedia.com.tw. I'm using stereo speakers and a stereo headset.

1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: Cheap, 7.1

Cons: Music stutters constantly. Updated drivers, uninstall/ reinstall, didn't help. Stuttering does not correlate with use of other devices or CPU/ memory load.

Other Thoughts: Thank you to NewEgg for the painless, no hassle RMA.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful soundcard!

Pros: Works terrific with Windows XP MCE and Windows Vista RC1! I built a PVR for our home theater and optical output is perfect on 5.1 output. Output through Vista is much more intuitive than Windows XP MCE... actually gives you choice of optical digital or analog output. Pretty cool!

Cons: Manufacture's website is not too friendly, but I really didn't need it. Vista installed native drivers as did XP.

Other Thoughts: Not sure why review on 6/19 had problems with window update. I didn't have that problem.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute piece of junk

Pros: Ummmm....ok...price!

Cons: 6 months old and it just conked out on me! Drivers are a pain to install. Doesn't do it automatically.

Other Thoughts: Do not let windows update replace the driver! It kills the sound!
