5 out of 5 eggsGreat for HiFi recording

Pros: I recently built a new computer, and I wanted to include the capability of recording HiFi audio for transferring my vinyl records to digital format. This card is working very well for this purpose. I can sample the signal from the Line-In stereo input at up to 192,000 Hz, with 24-bit depth and achieve excellent fidelity. Card installation and driver installation were straightforward. Do not forget to attach the power cable to the card. I am using the Tracktion v. 5 program (purchased separately) for the recording with excellent results. The card has essentially zero background noise when the computer is idling, or dedicated to recording. However, I can hear electronic noise when the computer is busy doing other hard drive-intensive activities such as a virus scan. I.e. I cannot record HiFi audio during a virus scan -- good to know, but not a problem.

Cons: I sincerely wish that the card had stereo RCA socket line inputs. Instead, the line input is a stereo 6.35 mm socket. Therefore, I had to find a stereo RCA-to-6.35 mm jack adapter for this purpose. This seems unfortunate, given the otherwise excellent design of the card. At a minimum, ASUS should provide a RCA-6.35 mm stereo plug adapter for this purpose.

Other Thoughts: The Tracktion v.5 program is a good audio recording tool and a good choice for getting the most out of this card.

My build components are as follows: Antec Gaming Series One black steel case, GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD3H motherboard, Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 processor, Dynatron K17 92mm CPU cooler, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit, COUGAR A760 model CGR B3-760 760W power supply, CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR memory, LG Black Blu-ray Burner model WH14NS40, LG Black Blu-ray ROM model UH12NS30, AFT PRO-57U USB 3.0 ports and card reader, ASUS Xonar Essence ST PCI Audio Card, Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5" 7mm SSD, Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB HDD, Western Digital WD Black WD2002FAEX 2TB, old/recycled HDDs: WD 320 GB WD3200AAJB and Seagate 200 GB ST3200822A, StarTech 1 Port PCIe IDE Controller card (for old recycled IDE hard drives), StarTech PEX1394B3LP PCIe IEEE1394 card, U.S. Robotics USR5638 V.92 PCIe Fax modem.

4 out of 5 eggsStable and low noise, but...

Pros: The lowest noise headphone connection I've ever heard from a PC since the SB16. 100% CPU and GPU load does not noticeably increase noise. The output amplifier has enough headroom to drive 300 ohm headphones with lots of support for bass. The TPA6120 sounds quite good for a reasonably priced amplifier. It uses real mechanical relays for output routing.

Cons: Hot switching between outputs can cause pops and clicks in the audio signal which happens when the relays switch. This may be hardware and/or software related. The relays are audible in themselves, but the headphones pop at the same time. I always hear pops and clicks when first starting up Windows, but never once everything is finished booting. This may not happen for all outputs.

1 out of 5 eggshorrible drivers

Pros: When it works it sounds very nice.

Cons: The drivers availible from Asus do not work. I reformated my comp and now can not get the latest drivers from Asus's site to work. The drivers on the CD provided when I purchased this crash windows 7 64 bit (I.E. stops workign after installing drivers). After installing the latest drivers form Asus's site the device manager says this device is workign properly, but it does not work. No sound at all! I am very disapointed in Asus over this device. Asus has gone down hill over the years. :(

Pros: if you have a high end pc rig. gen 2-4 intel chip and a late generation mobo , also a set of good power speakers in my case creation t-140,s or b&w mm1,s , set up on speaker stands, the win 7 driver from asus , play some 24/96 sacd rips or 96 k rips and you will probably enjoy listening to your music again.

Cons: price of admission is pretty high. win 7 drivers can be a issue. doa,s possible too. but if your pc rig is 1st rate and you have paitience. its worth it. i went through all that ,and now after a year , im ordering a second st. for a new pc build.if card doa , asus will replace it, just have to have some paitience if this stuff happens.

Other Thoughts: been through the tube 2 ch. amps push /pull class a a/b 1000.00 cd players , etc.etc. ended up selling it all, but i kept my cd,s the music is what its really about.this card and my frankenstein home made pc have allowed me to enjoy my music collection again. this card just puts me over that satisfied line.i dont find myself thinking about upgrading this or that,i just relax and enjoy the music.took me a heck of alot more money in 2 channel stereo to pull that off. i really emphasize to you, a latest 1150, 1155, 1156 2011 socket intel mobo 2nd-4th gen i5 or i7 intel a 600 watt or bigger quality psu, and best power speakers you can buy, is the only way to get all this card has to offer. my humble opinion at least.

2 out of 5 eggsWell... go for HT Omega instead

Pros: Easy to install. PCI.

Cons: Well, it's simply not up to the task compared to my Ht Omega eClaro.
One way to describe it: the is a "veil", something obstructs the sound. It's just not the best card on the market for this price range.

Other Thoughts: Returned it. Happy with the eClaro (but the software sucks).

5 out of 5 eggsPLEASE choose this over HT Omega Claro Halo!

Pros: Brilliant design and sound quality.
Possibly the best consumer sound card there is.

Cons: Doesn't come with audiophile grade headphones.

Other Thoughts: I owned the HT Omega Claro Halo card a week before this, mostly for the headphone amp. I RMA'd it for this one and WOW am I glad I did. Even though they use the same hardware, the headphone amp on this one is at least twice as loud. It powers my cans almost as loud as I would want them too, it does a amazing job.

This is a extremely good choice for headphones and replaces the need for more expensive equipment!

3 out of 5 eggsasus xonar essence st

Pros: nothing sounds as good as this card. it rocks the house. provided you use xp o.s. and included xp software.

Cons: built around your fathers operating system, namely xp. well xp and windows 7 dont like each other.and the driver download from asus website ie; pci st 7 12 8 1794 w7 well this driver is a patch job, cause its buggy as heck. keep getting no power connection at start ups, restart fixed this for a few days, now card is doa, computer store checked it and rma is in the works.this card is long in the tooth ,perfect for xp but . as for windows 7x64 it was not built up from the ground to have drive it. i dont think this can be resolved cause its a tiger masquerading as a leopard with the wrong software.its still a tiger, and dont really know what a leopard does. this analogy due to my own ignorance in technical terminology, point is it just dont take to the windows 7 op.system it wants xp, as it should due to its nature of being designed to run in that op.system.

Other Thoughts: not asuses fault that xp is now all but extinct, windows 7 is far superior to it and once you change over to it , you will never want to go back to xp. after a short while getting use to it anyways. too bad the card wasnt made later and based on the win 7 operating system with a download patch for xp that is glitchy. these two operating systems just dont get along at all ,win 7 primary,xp secondary would be a better choice for this card

5 out of 5 eggsNever failed me

Pros: Never stopped working
Great software and mixer options

Cons: Mixer lacks an export function (though you can google how to save them)
Asus support......good luck if you ever want a real answer to a question, better ask forum people instead

Other Thoughts: I've never had an issue with my card - and I've had a lot of components and cards that have been low quality garbage even wtih lots of, you can't use the headphones and speakers at the same time...but if someone is looking at this card, they should already know that. I primarily use my headphones.

5 out of 5 eggsThis card sounds "sweet as good honey.".

Pros: Doesn't overburden your cpu with its power cord input. Wonderful hassle-free setup. I was pleasantly surprised with the controlled crisp sound quality with both active bookshelf speakers and good headphones.

Cons: Sound has a little short pop sound that comes out of speakers or headphones when Win 7 64 boots up. I think it's due to my overclocking. However it's not that loud at all, and I'm used to it. It's not really a con to me, but may be for some that boot up everyday.

Other Thoughts: I really didn't expect it to be worthy to be herald in the "hifi" territory because for the price when compared to other options that I have tried I find this card to be a downright bargain.
