4 out of 5 eggsASUS Xonar DS

Pros: Better sound quality then my ASUS on board. PCI Slot was a plus for me. My MOBO only has one PCI Express 1x and it is occupied with a wifi card.

Cons: Drivers are often funny with initial set up (Win 8.1) but with a little google-fu and 20 min I was up and running.

The ASUS Xonar DS Audio Center is Terrible. It looks, feel, and has the controls similar to Winamp from 2001. So terrible. With the huge conglomerate that is ASUS they could not do better?

Other Thoughts: I never would have given this card a try if Newegg/Creative Labs had a PCI card that was not a decade old. So this seemed to be my best bet.

Newegg currently has two of these cards (Xonar DS) for sale. I purchased this one (Item #: N82E16829132017). The other one is (Item #: N82E16829132013). The card of the review was a few more bucks and shipping was more expensive. I was unable to tell a difference when buying but I only bought this one in hopes that some revision was done and this was a "updated" version.

2 out of 5 eggsnot windows 7 compatible

Pros: Hard to say, it never worked.

Cons: Newegg needs to give comprehensive info on os compatibility on all pci products. When I installed the software for this card, it made allot of my os functions freeze. I had to manually shut down all of the software so I could access windows control panel to uninstall. Supposedly windows 7 is backwards compatible for such issues but I guess not for this one. I downloaded the windows 7 drivers from but it doesn't fix this issue. I'm just going to have to get a card with newer tech.

Other Thoughts: For a 60 dollar product you would think that newegg or asus would give a little more info to help you with your purchasing choice. Kinda sucks that I was only able to find out that this card is incompatible with my new system well after the return date.

5 out of 5 eggsUsed to think it didn't make a difference

Pros: -sound quality

Cons: You've gotta know how to manually install latest drivers before you can click the setup.exe from the Asus Website. I had to find the device in device manager and tell it where the driver folder was, install it, restart, then i could click the setup.exe from the Asus driver I downloaded. Had to restart again

Other Thoughts: I'veh had this card for over a year now. I used to run an older P35 board with a core 2 duo. I used the Klipsch Image S4's, and couldn't tell much difference between on-board Realtek audio and this card. I was a little dissapointed. But....

I upgraded to a Sandybridge and was using the on board audio. But my earbuds failed. I decided to buy some cans. I got the VModa Crossfade LP's. On max volume they didn't sound loud enough at all. Figured I'd need to get an amp. But first tried installing this card again.... It. Sounds. amazing. No joke, this card puts out WAY better sound than the on board did. Not only that, but somehow without an amp it can get 3x louder than the on board as well. I was beginning to think audio cards were a gimmick if you werent a music professional. But not anymore. This $50 card sounds ridiculously amazing. I HIGHLY recommend getting a card like this if you use cans and want the best bang for your buck. I highly recommend the Crossfades as well. FIVE EGGS!

5 out of 5 eggsAsus Maximus IV Extreme-Z

Pros: Solid card that works well for my flac collection and my HD518.

Cons: I can't record at 192kHz?..

Other Thoughts: This is in regards to KJ riot's comment. The reason why this card doesn't fit on your Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z, is because that mobo does not have any PCI slots.

All those out there that are preparing to buy this card... Be warned.. PCI is not the same as PCI-Express . . .

5 out of 5 eggsA Qualified Thumbs Up

Pros: Lots of features - great value.

Cons: Software suffers severe suckage.

Other Thoughts: Picked it up based on forum reviews planning to replace my HiFi Link (USB) on the home theater PC. Did the full installation and it sounded simply horrible. Heavy breathing - and out of a tin can to boot. Tried all the available tweaks in the Xonar control panel without luck. Rather than just toss it, I did a full uninstall - with extreme prejudice by rolling back to a prior XP restore point. Once the restore was complete, XP found the new hardware again, and I inserted the CD as requested by the "found new hardware" routine. This gave me the basic driver ONLY. Fired up media center again, picked the same music, hit the go button, and ... wahoo! Works great! Not sure if it's a major improvement over the HiFi Link yet, but it does sound a lot tighter with the Xonar. Needless to say, I will NOT be installing the full software package that came with the card ever again.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: See other thoughts

Cons: Would not install, or fit into my motherboard no matter what slot i tried. I have the Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z. Either not all asus products fit each other or im stupid.

Other Thoughts: No clue where to go from here. Dont believe I can get a refund since its opened, and whats the point of exchanging for a new one. Very Upset.
