5 out of 5 eggsBest deal in digital SLR

Pros: -Great picture quality
-Flash can sync at 1/500 second
-Lightweight and small camera body
-Low cost
-Great battery life, can photograph all day and be near full charge.
-Fairly easy to use, decent menu system
-A real viewfinder
-Decent results at high ISO settings

Cons: -Limited compatibility with older Nikon lenses
-only 6 MP
-Nikon stopped making them recently(get one while you can).

Other Thoughts: Bottom line: This is the best deal in digital SLRs, if you have some experience with digital cameras it is easy to use. You needn't break the bank, as you can get started for under $500, some point and shoots cost more than the D40! It is higher quality than some of its successors like D60, D3000, D5000. If you want to spend more, like $1,000, go for the D90, which is the next plateau. The 6MP is not as much a limit as you may think, get a 4-8GB SD card and you can store hundreds of shots. Because of this the pixels are larger and will perform better at high ISOs: 800 is decent, 1600 is usable, the lowest (default) is 200. Do set the exposure compensation 0.7 stop underexposed for best results, I find this necessary in almost all cameras though.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Entry Level DSLR and then some

Pros: The 6MP is actually an advantage with this DSLR. You get low noise levels at low light situations when the ISO is high, even at 1600 with the right lens. I have had this camera since they came out in 2006 I believe and it still ranks with friends' cameras which are later and more MPs. It has the auto settings for the beginners and then later it allows you to really tweak its settings. For more glowing reviews on this...see Ken Rockwell's views on this camera. Hear from an expert. I am ready to upgrade now after 3 years with this camera but I don't plan on selling it. I am going to keep it. Why? Because I love my little powerhouse.

Cons: Low MPs can be a problem when cropping..although compared to my friend's 10MP camera, we get almost the same results from cropping. It is so good that you are reluctant to upgrade..you don't want to retire it, even with today's latest cameras.

Other Thoughts: If this is your first DSLR, do not hesitate to buy this...you will not be disappointed. Also see Ken Rockwell's site after you purchase it, to get the most out of your D40. For sample pics...go to flickr and see the pictures produced by this camera.

5 out of 5 eggsFamily choice!

Pros: Great starter DSLR camera. Woarks great in both professional and in family point-n-shoot modes. Sturdy assembly, ergonomic body and easy controls. Great quality professional product that lasts for a reasonable price.

Cons: No major CONs. Auto focus is slow in poorly lit (i.e. non-professional) setting.
My wife finds it a bit heavy, but still enjoys the results.

Other Thoughts: Originally recommended to me by a college teacher for the Photography class.
Find a smaller (non-branded) camera bag if you want to take D40 on family outings leaving bulky lens collection at home.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a great 1st digital SLR camera. We have seen a great difference from the quality of pics from our old (point and shoot) power shot. Camera give a wide range of functionality and features to help make your pictures outstanding.

Cons: Would like to see what you are trying to take the picture of show up in the lcd screen prior to shooting it. You have to wait until you have taken the picture to see it on the screen. Not a big deal just a feature they should add.

Other Thoughts: Great price from NewEgg along with other products at super cheap prices.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing.

Pros: I LOVE this camera. It takes photos that other cameras in this price range can't touch. AND....if you get nice lens, and are competent, you can easily shoot professional quality photos.

Cons: Can't use a compact flash card, but it still works quickly.

Other Thoughts: A great DSLR all around-- not necessarily only for beginners.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat start!

Pros: light weight, small, easy functionality, a great starting point for anyone wanting a DSLR, 2.5fps shooting, instant start up wide range and easy setup for any beginner.

Cons: too bad there isnt a higher ISO rating, or higher than 6.1MP, then again it is an entry level camera.

Other Thoughts: i got this for myself with my first paycheck, im not gonna say im pro cause im always learning but the 6.1MP is perfectly fine for an 8x10 print easily. id like to say this 6MP sensor is perfect, ive taken thousands of shots i wanna say in the neighborhood of 10,000 shots with it and its amazing and easy to use. i got this with the nikkor 18-55mm and 55-200VRmm lenses and also own a sb-600 speedlight flash.

im always learning new tricks and starting to use manual alot more, sometimes AUTO doesnt cut it for me, and someday i hope to upgrade to a D300S someday til then i love my D40. this is def worth the price.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Deal

Pros: I love this camera. If you are using point and shoot cameras and are looking to take a little better quality photos then get this thing. But more than quality, this camera makes shooting pictures so much easier and faster. No shutter lag, no lcd lag.

It's rugged. I dropped this thing on solid rock while changing lenses and after I cycled the power it was up and running. Thanks goodness the lense was off or I might have broken it!

Cons: No depth of field preview, but not sure I would use this anyways. No autobracketing for easily taking HDR photos. The lack of a top LCD for setting doesn't bother me.

Other Thoughts: I have the stock 18-55mm lense which is lightweight and sharp. I've gotten the thing a little dirty but it still works like a champ. I also got the 55-200mm VR lense that works really well too.
