Can a digital SLR be easy to operate and affordable? With Nikon's D40, yes it can and it can be more! It is a compact little camera which gives you stunning images with its state of the art 6.1 MP resolution. Designed to be easy to use, you get professional quality photographs without having to fool with all of the complex equations. The automated Digital Vari Program takes the guesswork out of photography!
The lens that comes with the camera is a 52mm, with a focal length range of 18 to 55mm. With this wonderful lens and a body full great function you'll get wonderful photographs full of the sharp images you are looking for. Take this on vacation, to the family reunion or to the playground, to record days you will want to remember years from now.
Where ever you go, what ever you do, a great camera is an excellent addition to your packing. Splashing along the white beaches of Florida, or driving the Blue Ridge Parkway during the Fall, you will get the beautiful, colorful pictures you crave, without the complications of heavy, multi-step cameras can give. You will get what you want with the lightweight, easy-to-use Nikon D40!
Pros: This is a great camera and a huge step up from point and shoot. If you think your point and shoot pics are good and want to move to the next level but don't want to spend over $1K, this is a great camera to start with. Big plus is its light weight and smaller size than some of the pro DSLR's. Thus it's not bulky. It takes great pics, especially landscape, and as one reviewer said, I still don't use all the features available. Slowly I've started using aperture preferred, etc. but in the beginning the auto everything was perfect for me until I started to get daring to try new things.
Cons: The macro is not as good as my Casio P&S, but you're supposed to use a real macro lens. Nikon macro lenses cost about $300, so that's a future purchase.
A camera case would be nice, and an extra battery if you have the spare cash. The battery lasts a long time, but if you take a lot of flash pics, it wears it down. I shoot 200 - 400 pics per outing so I have to recharge the next day (takes 90 minutes for a full recharge).
Other Thoughts: I don't use the RAW format, I just take everything in jpeg format and they're awesome pictures.
Also, the LCD viewer is only for viewing the photos. You can't use it for composing photos or taking videos like P&S. You have to use the viewfinder.
Several of my friends have seen my D40 and they plan to buy one too.

Great Camera - Good Price
Reviewed By: Jutt on 3/25/2007
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Easy to use; takes great pics; auto ISO/auto contrast settings work extremely well; light weight; very accurate, very bright 2.5" LCD; excellent kit lens; good battery life; great price
Cons: Light meter is off but you can compensate by adjusting the exposure setting.
Other Thoughts: I can't believe how fun and easy it is to take shots with this thing. The auto-ISO setting ( Canon doesn't have this feature) allows the camera to auto adjust to light conditions and it does it extremely well. The same goes for the auto contrast setting. Set the ISO and contrast on auto, adjust the exposure, and shoot without having to worry about anything. The battery will last you an entire day of shooting and then some. The 2.5" LCD is extremely accurate and bright unlike Canon's LCD. The menus are easy to navigate and the camera and lens are so light that it allows you to take the D40 anywhere and enjoy DSLR quality shots. I didn't have a Nikon SLR previously, so that the fact that you must have AF-S or the older pro AF-l lenses was not a problem. Also, dont worry about the 6 megapixels, the price and the quality of the pictures this camera produces more than compensates.

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: light weight, small, easy functionality, a great starting point for anyone wanting a DSLR, 2.5fps shooting, instant start up wide range and easy setup for any beginner.
Cons: too bad there isnt a higher ISO rating, or higher than 6.1MP, then again it is an entry level camera.
Other Thoughts: i got this for myself with my first paycheck, im not gonna say im pro cause im always learning but the 6.1MP is perfectly fine for an 8x10 print easily. id like to say this 6MP sensor is perfect, ive taken thousands of shots i wanna say in the neighborhood of 10,000 shots with it and its amazing and easy to use. i got this with the nikkor 18-55mm and 55-200VRmm lenses and also own a sb-600 speedlight flash.
im always learning new tricks and starting to use manual alot more, sometimes AUTO doesnt cut it for me, and someday i hope to upgrade to a D300S someday til then i love my D40. this is def worth the price.
