4 out of 5 eggsJames R. Review Update

This review is from: Nikon COOLPIX P600 Red 16.1 MP 60X Optical Zoom 24mm Wide Angle Digital Camera HDTV Output

Pros: I wanted to add some info I failed to include in my P600 review. Specifically, the poor focusing at high zoom is greatly alleviated at smaller image sizes. It handles very well up to 8mp images. The 16mp size will require a tripod when zooming into higher powers, i.e. 40x plus.. Or, zoom slowly. Hope this helps

Cons: Please see original review, 11/30/2014

4 out of 5 eggsNeeds Nikons Attention

This review is from: Nikon COOLPIX P600 Red 16.1 MP 60X Optical Zoom 24mm Wide Angle Digital Camera HDTV Output

Pros: This is a very versatile camera. It has all the usual settings, special effects, and adjustments you expect. They are easy to access and they all work well. The best feature of the P600 is the quality of the lens, which was the major reason I went for this camera. Beautiful colors and sharp images throughout the telephoto range. Try shooting an object, say a decorative plate, at 2 feet and then zoomed in from 50 feet. Compare the 2 and you will have near perfect duplicity in color, sharpness, and contrast throughout the images. I also like the light weight and the location and ease of use of the controls. The 2 zoom options and locations were much more useful than I expected. Those 2 items are now a part of me!

Cons: A very troubling problem is the slow focus at a higher zoom range. Often you must press the focus button half down to find your subject. In a split second you've lost your shot! You can work around this with slower zooms and patience, but it is very aggravating. I havn't found anything on the Internet to explain this, so maybe it is something Nikon can fix with a firmware upgrade. Another serious problem is the mis-advertising of the Wi-Fi capabilities. It only works on a few Android devices, and on some Ipads/Iphone devices. You will have to really dig to find if your device is compatible or not. Unfortunately, mine is not.
, even though it is fairly new and has ver. 4.3.

Other Thoughts: I'm hoping Nikon will address the two shortcomings I noted in the Cons. At the risk of saying I'm old, I have used and enjoyed a variety of Nikon products over the past 50 years.
This camera will also be a pleasurable Nikon experience if they will listen to their customers and do the needed followup.

4 out of 5 eggsNikon Coolpix P600

This review is from: Nikon COOLPIX P600 Red 16.1 MP 60X Optical Zoom 24mm Wide Angle Digital Camera HDTV Output

Pros: The secret of getting good photos is to have your camera with you all the time. The Nikon Coolpix P600 fits the center-console compartment of my car whereas a digital SLR does not. It's easy to tote around all day long; a digital SLR starts to feel like a boat anchor after several hours.

Excellent image quality.
Movies look and sound very good.
Beautiful camera design.
Easy to read menu's.
Very nice lens cap and leash.
Folding display screen is excellent.
Wide-angle/tele switch on the left side is very useful for vertical format's much easier to get to instead of the one on the shutter button.

Cons: Low light focus ability is only adequate.
Movie taking ergonomics are somewhat clunky....sometimes you have to hit the button twice to get it to record.
The camera takes a few seconds on start-up before it's ready to record images.
The eyepiece diopter wheel settings are too coarse. I can't get a sharp focus in the viewfinder, and I have to put on my reading glasses to see the image in the folding display.

Other Thoughts: I've put about 700-photos on this camera since I bought it. Camera buffs I've shown it to really lust after the anodized red with black accents design. Earlier Nikon's had folding display screens that were almost useless, the P600 has a folding screen like the Canon PowerShot and that's what sold me.

My previous camera was a Canon PowerShot SX20-IS. It lasted about 15,000 photos and about 5-years before the lens started to have problems. The Canon took forever (3-seconds) between shots and you would miss lots of great photos while waiting to take the next shot.

The Nikon, with a fast chip, seems to take almost 2-seconds between shots but the performance has been acceptable so far. I'm sure with burst mode, you could get the shot's you want, but the 'grab' shots won't wait. I can get the lens cap off, hit the ON button and grab a shot somewhat faster with the Nikon compared to the Canon.

I take lots of 'technical' photos of machinery and equipment and the Nikon is clearly better than the Canon.

There will be better cameras coming down the pike in the the meantime, I heartily recommend the Nikon Coolpix P600.
