This version of Canon's flagship image stabilized ultra zoom PowerShot has been wildly popular since the day it was released. Unlike the S2, the PowerShot S3 IS is a relatively minor upgrade to its predecessor, much more of an evolutionary change than a wholesale reinvention. The basic spec (aside from the sensor) is pretty familiar; 12x optical zoom, flip 'n' twist LCD, tons of photographic control and advanced movie mode with stereo sound. The amazing Canon DIGIC II processor optimizes image quality and makes image processing faster than ever, and the ultrasonic motor makes the zoom function almost silent.

With a full range of shooting modes for the novice, and precise control for the experienced photographer, this great addition to the Canon line is great in almost any shooting situation. Spontaneous video recording is available at the touch of a button, at 60fps for up to an hour. Still shots can even be taken while shooting video using the proprietary MovieSnap feature, making this a fully featured photographer’s dream in a compact model at an excellent price.

  • newegg 6.0 Megapixel The feature-rich PowerShot S3 IS has 6.0 Megapixel imaging power for the high resolutions needed for big prints and close cropping.
  • newegg 12x Optical Zoom The extra-long 12x Canon optical zoom is all contained in a sleek, compact design that embodies sophistication to closely capture intimate details.
  • newegg DIGIC II Image Processor Canon's DIGIC II Image Processor provides markedly faster startup, auto focus and playback for improved processing speed and image quality. DIGIC II assures more colorfully vibrant images.
  • newegg Image Stabilizer Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology ensures awesome-steady shooting with phenomenal picture clarity even when you are in motion.
  • newegg 16:9 Widescreen The PowerShot S3 IS's widescreen resolution produces images and film clips perfect for a widescreen TV or computer monitor.
  • newegg ISO 800 The PowerShot S3 IS features the new ISO 800 setting to negate the effects of camera shake and sharpens subjects in low-light situations with high shutter speeds for greater shooting flexibility.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent point-n-shoot camera!

Pros: Small and compact.

Lightweight.

Excellent picture quality for a non-DSLR format.

Very easy to use for an amateur, yet maintains a decent amount of manual settings for "pro" usage.

High-quality Canon lens, great wide-angle to zoom ratio.

Captures motion-video at good resolutions.

Articulating LCD viewscreen; clear, sharp display.

Highly versatile.

Great battery life.

Cons: Non-DSLR.

Sensor pixel-count is average.

Cannot mount filters to the lens.

Lens cap is easily dislodged by accident. The cap has to be very easy to remove since the zoom lens protrudes from within the housing; if the lens cap were firmly affixed, the lens-motion mechanism could become damaged if the lens were accidentally zoomed-in while the cap is in place.

Zooming while capturing motion video records an audible motor-noise.

LCD screen not as big as some cameras in this price range.

Other Thoughts: This camera was used frequently for several years, my wife even began her professional photography career (which is still going strong) using this camera.

Canon has since progressed to better and better "high-end" point-n-shoot cameras, all of which I would recommend to any amateur or mid-grade photography enthusiast.

Nothing (in my opinion) will replace a true DSLR in the foreseeable future, but this little gem gave them a good run for their money.

5 out of 5 eggsCannon Camera / Pls don't use Sony in same Context

Pros: I just want to say that Cannon may have made some sorry printers in the day, but their digital cameras are the shizzATTT.

Cons: Not sure. Idont own this one yet. Nor have i spent more that 180 on a camera. I always get 1-2 years use at least under EXTREME abuse situations with Cannon. For instance, i have a 3 year old power shot i was using in the field today. The lens wanted to stop moving in and out. I simply beat the hell out of it, and it started working again. I know it wont be long now, but i have banged this camera about 100 times more that the manufaturer suggest as acceptable. Tough product!!

Other Thoughts: That IDIOT that said that he preferred a sony. I think his name was N/A. Well that about says it all!!! EVERYONE who knows cameras knows that Sony digital still cameras SUCK!!!. The WORST photos i have ever dreamed....... So please take that propaganda somewhere else. Perhaps back to you marketing dept. I am very admte about this as i have spent money on a few sony cameras, and, not only do they NOT HOLD A CANDLE to Cannon, they shoot the worst photos you have ever seen. Go away with that cr@p. Japanese products are the BEST. But not Sony Cameras.. Sorry for the fact.

3 out of 5 eggsRather disappointed in this camera

Pros: Takes good pictures as long as there is very high light.
I like the continous burst, rather than the 3 picture burst on other cameras I've owned.

Cons: First, no date stamp. When I wrote Canon about it, their response was I could use software to add the date. Not what I wanted to do.
Second, unless it is very high light, the pictures come out grainy. I have experimented with the settings, and do not find anything that I like.

Other Thoughts: More than likely, this is the last Canon I will buy. Will go back to Kodak.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Camera

Pros: Takes amazing shots, better than my brother's Digital Rebel IMO. Tons of features for this camera like selecting only one color to show up in a picture or replacing a color with a different one, my nephews had fun seeing themselves as green or blue. Super macro feature is amazing for really close up shots and high detail. Many white balance modes to make sure your light looks white and not orange or some other funky color. Small and portable with high performance. Has the functionality for total customization or perfect for point and shoot as well. The fact it takes 4 AA batteries instead of a rechargeable one is awesome, i was kind of bummed at first but when i got it and started using a lot i was glad i could switch batteries without having to buy another expensive one.

Cons: None, well maybe the view finder is digital screen which is good for the extra stuff you can display, but the image is kinda tweaked in the frame. Not really a big deal to me since i mainly use the LCD screen on the back but might be an issue for others.

Other Thoughts: I bough this because it was a very nice camera that was SLR but takes amazing pictures and has a high zoom. I didn't want an SLR one for the price and two for the weight and size. This thing packs a powerful punch and is perfect for amateur photographers like myself. I have 2 sets of rechargeable batteries for this thing and haven't had a complaint yet.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 12x zoom, the flippy lcd mounting is fun and useful. Fun little videos.

Cons: A year and a day, just out of warranty and the zoom started making a grinding noise and not working, like a stripped gear. It hasn't been mistreated or stressed. Also, the battery life is erratic as is the time between shots even with fresh batteries, the same settings and the same SD card. The LCD is dim, on a recent trip I used a number of cameras, all point and shoots, taking pics for others with their camera and this one was the dimmest lcd with the least detail even on the brighter of its two settings. I would guess 40% of the brightness of other cameras. In some darker situation (evening or indoors) I learned to just settle for spotting the position of a bright object on the lcd and estimating what would be in the picture. At home, on the computer, the pics are great.

Other Thoughts: I moved from a 35mm slr and I considered a telephoto my basic lens and this sort of meets that need but it's broken and I haven't used it that much, maybe 20 times. It feels like I bought a Taiwan-made tool at a USA price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat starter camera

Pros: I love the built-in optical zoom and super macro mode. The camera has a nice heft like an SLR without being huge. Movable LCD screen works great for shooting from odd angles. Lots of shooting information available on screen, including a histogram. Surprising video quality with stereo sound (creates huge files). With good batteries, this thing takes hundreds of pictures.

Cons: Like everyone says, lens cap is lame. Manual focus has never been great, but that may be my own fault. LCD screen in open mode does not secure well to camera body (only a minor annoyance).

Other Thoughts: This is a great in-between camera. It has enough SLR-like features that I've been able to learn a bit, take great photos, and decide whether or not I'll be interested in investing in a DSLR in a year or two (almost certainly).

4 out of 5 eggsVery capable camera

Pros: Image stabilization is really what makes this camera. It is easy to use. Shoots movies that look very good. Shoots photos that look great. Long zoom is nice.

Cons: The viewfinder is why I did not give this camera five stars. Hard to see in bright light.

Other Thoughts: If you have only one camera this is the one to have. Very fun to use. Lots of buttons, but after you learn them it becomes easy and natural.

3 out of 5 eggsNICE...But...

Pros: Went to a Local Camera Shop and this was there. Very Nice, with good features...but....

Cons: Too Pricey for just a 6.0 MP Camera....All the features it has is most likely the reason, but still doesn't change the fact that it is 6.0 MP and can get a 6.0 alot cheaper with close too the same features.

5 out of 5 eggseasy to use, high quality shots

Pros: This camera takes absolutely fantastic shots with the "auto" mode if you just want to point-and-shoot. The Image Stabilization is wonderful - it really helps me out, as I have pretty unsteady hands.

Cons: The instruction manual is a little bit difficult to deal with. It takes a while to find specific things, such as manual focus, or how to set it on macro mode for extreme closeups. This might be my fault more than the manual.

Other Thoughts: I have owned and used a few other brands of cameras that were purchased in a similar price range, but this one is far and away the best digital camera I've used. It's gotten me excited about taking pictures again.
