From the camera to the player, that’s how easy it is to play movies taken with Canon’s DC210 digital camcorder. This compact unit uses 3” DVD-R/RW and even DVD-R DL media for up to 108 minutes of video per disc. If you want to look at what you’ve taken while still on vacation the camera comes with AV ports.

A 35X optical zoom will bring just about anything you want to shoot in close, and the 1000X digital zoom brings you in even tighter. The precisely matched lens features high-quality glass with a unique, super spectra coating developed exclusively by Canon to reduce flare and ghosting for a clean image. The Image Stabilization system will eliminate camera shake whether you're filming from a moving vehicle or making a long shot without a tripod.

The 2.7" widescreen display has the same 16:9 aspect ratio as your TV so what you shoot is what you see. You can also use the screen to take advantage of the easy editing feature. DVD functions mean you don’t have to worry about recording over something you want to keep. As soon as you start recording the camera makes sure to put the new footage on a blank part of the disk.

Pros: Records directly to DVD for easy viewing on a television (in DVD video mode, not the editable VRO mode).

Cons: Grainy image quality, almost impossible to edit the video on a computer.

Other Thoughts: I spent over a week trying to figure out how to edit the video from this camcorder on the computer. I was never able to open the VRO file it creates, and working with the VOBs proved difficult. I ultimately exchanged this for a minidv based camcorder and have been much happier. (Note if you go with a minidv camcorder, read reviews to see if people complain about hearing the tape motor).

4 out of 5 eggsNot a Bad Little Camera

Pros: Light weight, good price for a DVD camcorder, nice video quality, easy editing from camera

Cons: No USB option (I believe the DC220 has that option)

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure why others have given this camcorder such a bad review. I enjoy using it. The picture quality is quite good. Looks about the same as my friend's fancy Sony camcorder and is also on par with my previous Panasonic camcorder (which cost me 3x the price of this one several years ago).

I didn't have to purchase any video editing software, but I don't do anything to crazy. Dropping the DVD file into Windows Movie Maker works like a charm for me and I haven't had any issues with finalizing the disk from the camcorder and then playing in a DVD player yet. Of course, if I was going to be doing anything other than editing family videos I'd probably spend a lot more on a more commercial-line camera.

I really miss having a USB port where I can just download directly to my PC from the camera, but the handiness of having a DVD ready to play makes up for it.

Overall, I'd say it's a good buy for the money. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done.

1 out of 5 eggsIf you only want a point-shoot-play...

Pros: Easy to use; if you only want a this camcorder to shoot videos, make VERY minor edits from the
camcorder itself, and then drop in your DVD player -- the DC210 is okay.

Cons: After talking with Canon, I found out that they chose not to inform their users, or even their retailers, that the output video format in VR mode is "VRO" -- a new, largely unsupported format.

Users CANNOT edit their videos without conversion software -- which, according to Canon reps, WILL NOT be provided on the Canon site. And, this format is so new, I had difficulty finding conversion software and I was unable to find freeware to convert the VRO video files (get ready to pay between $15-$25 for
conversion shareware -- in addition to DC210'S $340-$400 pricetag).

Canon does not provide ANY software for this camcorder -- their reason: the camcorder is ONLY intended for point-shoot-play. Note: Canon didn't even bother addressing the new "VRO" format in the user manual that came in the box or the PDF file on their site (the term itself isn't in their documentation).

Other Thoughts: Canon has obviously chosen to ignore rapidly increasing consumer interest in video editing. They could have packaged the DC210 with, at minimum, some conversion software and a better user-guide. So, I'm giving the DC210 a poor (vs abysmal) rating only because it does do what they wanted it to do.

Canon gets an 'F-minus' for not shelling out a few extra cents for each camcorder sold to ensure customers have conversion software.

2 out of 5 eggsPlease avoid

Pros: Nice features, easy to hold...I think thats about it.

Cons: Awful quality, I was watching some old analog tapes 2 days before receiving this camera and was excited to start using the new Canon. I was very dissappointed, the quality on the analog was far superior. The video was extreemly grainy shooting indoors, even in well lit rooms. Well I didn't read the return policy before buying this, so I hope I can keep someone else from making the same mistake.

Other Thoughts: I think I covered most of it.
