Canon takes its "No Compromise" attitude up a notch with the XL2 digital camcorder. This 3CCD unit is packed with features for the professional or advanced hobbyist. What makes Canon's XL system stand out from all the others is the interchangeable lens system. There are four XL system lenses plus an adapter that lets you use the entire range of Canon photographic lenses. If that wasn't enough Cine quality lenses are available from major lens manufacturers.
In a good movie the picture is only part of the experience. The XL2 has two XLR connections for 4 channels of audio. Phantom power is available for condenser microphones. SMPTE time coding and color bars let you do precise audio and video edits to give your movie the look you want.
Canon has included a full range of connection options including S-Video, RCA and BNC. A LANC terminal lets you hook the camera directly to compatible editing equipment. The advanced accessory shoe will power and communicate with multiple accessories like VL-3 video light and DM-50 directional microphone. Just slide them into the shoe and go, no external wires or cables are needed.

It's about time!
- Comments: Try ordering a pro-sumer camcorder from the internet and all you mostly see is everyone from Brooklyn New York selling all theirs at half the price only to find out when you give them your credit card they call back and push accessories at 500% above retail. Once you agree and pay, your cost is twice as much as the advertised price for a camcorder. If you decline these accessories, expect your order to be cancelled. So one day I saw Newegg finally carrying some high end equipment! Yes, the Canon xl2. And guess what!?!? It was Newegg selling it! Why was I happy with that? I have spent over $4000.00 at Newegg over my lifetime and never had a problem with NOTHING or ANYTHING at all.
It’s about time you sell a camcorder for the professionals, what took you all so long punks!
This Is The One.
- Pros: Excellent image quality with outstanding control over color. Fine detail, low noise. Outstanding optics. Free software to make your computer into a camera controllable VCR.
If you are looking for a (dare I say it) professional quality DV format camera This Is The One.
If you are looking at anything else in the prosumer price range don't waist your time This Is the One.
If you want a camera that looks and feels like a real camera...
- Cons: The only complaint - The lens cap does not come with a Clip or a cord to keep it attached to the camera.
- Other Thoughts: I have orders over $14,000 in parts this year alone from newegg. This is my first ever review. This camera is really that good.
Newegg is definitely the place to buy it. I had a similar experience to one of the other reviewers. I ordered from one of those NY discount houses. After giving my card info I was told that the unit I ordered was a "wholesale unit" and it did not come with items like a viewfinder, battery , battery charger, etc. They then offered me the "retail version" which would have been $300 more than the price here from newegg.

HD version
- Pros: Great image processing system, fantastic lense
- Cons: not HDV
- Other Thoughts: Customer service allowed me to returned one because job availability preferred hi-def resolution.
Awesome
- Pros: Great Look, Awesome controls, Awesome Picture, True 16.9, Plenty opps. & I could go on and on
- Cons: 5.5Lux, it should be around at least 3.0, a vew people don't like this camera because it does not have a pop out LCD screen. This is fine with me. because if you use a good glidecam, it's best to add the extra mon., on the harness. so you really don't need a pop out LCD. The only other thing is the factory mic. & 16bit audio proc. but I have a recording studio and thats no prob.
- Other Thoughts: This is to Newegg, Great fast shipping and product was in org. packing with all acc. you can get this camera here and not worry about getting ripped off.
Good camera, but not the best.
- Pros: Interchangeable lens system, sturdy camera, 4 audio channels, decent factory lens, native 16:9 ccd's (can bump footage STRAIGHT to film), 24p, ergonomics.
- Cons: A bit heavy for holding them camera by the handle (just use is shoulder mounted most of the time), interchangeable lens system, expensive, stock lens (20x) is kind of poor for wide angle usage.
- Other Thoughts: I'm a film student and have access to this camera as well as many others. I've used this camera on multiple shoots. Its a good camera, and the interchangeable lenses is a big draw. But the problem lies in the fact that many of the lenses are pretty expensive. The 24p is a nice touch and a decent way to try and compete with the DVX100.
That being said, I prefer the DVX over the Canon for a few different reasons, the biggest being the fact that it has three different film style gammas as opposed to the one on the Canon. This gives a better and more film-like feel (although lighting, composition, and other things contribute more than FPS). The DVX is also slightly lighter and alot cheaper ($2399 on NewEgg!)
All in all, it's a decent camera but for the money, I'd go with the DVX and buy a good tripod, good hard case, shotgun mic, and some filters and save for a 35mm lens adapter so you can use interchangeable lenses (kinda lol.) Like my teacher says, camera choice depends on the pers

Highlights
 |
3-CCD Performance The Canon XL2's 3-CCD system delivers higher resolution for outstanding picture quality, highly accurate color reproduction and a wide dynamic range with virtually no color noise. The three CCD image sensors are specifically designed to capture as much image detail as possible, making it a consummate field recording device for all conditions, no matter in super low light or under extremely bright conditions.
|
 |
Dual Aspect Ratio Shooting Formats Canon's XL2 offers both the standard 4:3 aspect ratio and the 16:9 widescreen TV aspect ratio. Whether your production is standard video, cinema, wide-screen TV, or HDTV, the XL2 with menu-selectable aspect ratios is the camera for you.
|
 |
XL Mount Interchangeable Lens System As the only MiniDV format camcorder with XL Mount Interchangeable Lens System, the XL2 offers users the ability to change lenses including the XL series of video lenses (the new 20x OIS, 16x OIS, 16x Manual, and 3x Wide), third-party cine lenses, and Canon's extensive range of photographic lenses ( with an XL system adapter).
|
 |
Fluorite Zoom Lens Canon's new 20X Professional L-Series Fluorite optical zoom lens for the XL2 uses fluorite to defeat color aberration effect that causes a reduction in sharpness, contrast and color. It precisely controls components of light, providing an excellent balance of these three critical ingredients of picture quality. The unsurpassed image quality is unobtainable with conventional optical glass.
|
 |
Super-Range Optical Image Stabilization Canon's Super-Range Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) system (VAP type) corrects various camcorder motions including fast vibrations when recording from inside a moving car, medium-speed motions from hand-held recording and the slower motions of body sway. No matter what you're recording and how you're recording it, the XL2's image stabilization corrects camcorder shake instantly.
