2 out of 5 eggsBeware, the video is really 1440x1080 not 1920x1080

Pros: Decent picture quality in very well-lit situations but grainy in low-light (such as indoor lighting). Good frame-rate, saves avchd format on HDD which can be copied to PC and played without conversion.

The videos it produces work fine with Kdenlive on Linux.

Cons: First the big con: It does NOT produce 1920x1080 videos. The actual video files it saves are 1440x1080. The CMOS sensor may be 1920x1080, and the mini-HDMI may output 1920x1080 to TV, but that is meaningless because it doesn't save that resolution on disk. I think it is very misleading and disappointing. The videos this camera creates are 1440x1080.

There is a manufacturing problem with some batches of this camera which causes defective Zoom levers, which Canon has published an advisory about. Mine suffered this defect out of the box and I had to send it to Canon for repair, which they did at no cost.

The hard drive is noisy and the clicking sounds of the disk writes every 2 or 3 seconds are picked up by the microphone. Your nice "Full HD" video will have a never-ending clicking soundtrack in quiet environments. You'll have to post-process your audio to de-click it (like an old record album).

Cannot connect USB to computer to copy files without also attaching AC power cable.

Other Thoughts: I would have returned it if Newegg's return policy on this item allowed for it.

Does not come with HDMI cable. A standard mini-HDMI to HDMI cable will work, no need to pay 10x extra for a Canon-branded cable.

The included battery is pretty weak. Expect to buy a larger-capacity battery or two (and a standalone charger, since this camera doesn't include one).

5 out of 5 eggsstill awsome after a year and a half

Pros: I have taken this camcorder everywhere. From extreme sports to hanging with my friends, this bad boy has filmed it all. The quality is amazing and i am never afraid of running out of space with 40gigs. I have had this thing for a year and a half and it has documented all the awesome moments of my life. You will bond with this camera.

Cons: The battery life isn't that great after you start using it for a while. I suggest buying another battery for backup.

Other Thoughts: buy the dm-50 microphone for awesome sound quality

5 out of 5 eggsWorth the price

Pros: Amazing video recording, lightweight, learning curve isn't bad at all, internal HDD is the way to go - direct transfer from camcorder to your PC.

Cons: People not familiar with the video format (M2TS) will run into some road blocks getting the recorded video to play on their PC.

Other Thoughts: You don't have to spent a lot of $$$ to be able to play/convert M2TS file formatted video. You can download the M2TS codec for free, just google 'm2ts codec' and look for fddshow or similar. I use Vista Ultimate - once I had the m2ts codec installed, I was able to use windows movie maker that was already included with Vista and converted the .m2ts video file to .wmv (option to .avi as well). Too easy.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing video quality

Pros: I really love this camcorder. The image quality is top notch. The controls are well placed and easy to use. The optical zoom toggle switch allows you to zoom slowly or quickly. A ton of features offered if you want to tweak things, but I found that the Auto setting works as well as any adjustment I could make myself. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.
Newegg delivered on time and in great shape.

Cons: The included software did not work for me. Similar situation for everyone, from what I have read here and elsewhere. It's a problem with the compatibility of programs with the .MTS files (aka .m2ts), which are AVCHD, based on the H.264 codec.
The top mounted microphone picks up every thing in all directions, including the cameraman's breathing. I highly recommend getting a shotgun/directional mic to replace it.
The onboard light is also lackluster, so if you plan to shoot in low light situations, you'll need more.
The camera will not store photos on the HDD, so you need a miniSD card as well.
The included battery lasts about 1-1.5 hours, but takes 3-3.5 hours to recharge fully, so you may want a backup just in case.

Other Thoughts: What works for me personally is using the included HGBackup utility to transfer the .MTS files from the HG10 to my PC's hard drive. Then I use TMPGenc 4.0 XPress v4.5.1.254 to convert the .MTS files into .mpg files. From these I can edit, cut, and author in whatever programs I want, with almost no loss in quality. I also found that either Cyberlink PowerDVD or Nero Showtime work well for viewing the .MTS files.

4 out of 5 eggsGood quality but not handy

Pros: Good quality of picture.

Cons: It records in .m2ts format and you can't upload the movies on web sites like Google video or youtube because they require file extension like wmp, avi or other basic formats to be able to upload. I called the technical support but they couldn't help. You need to buy a converter software which costs like 100 bucks to be able to upload movies online so your relatives and friends can see your films...

5 out of 5 eggsWow - Great camcorder!

Pros: -Many options and settings
-large internal (40GB) HDD
-if left idle for 5 min, it has auto-shutoff.
-hand strap is nice to have. Would have been great if it came with the optional shoulder strap.

In a quick browse through the user manual, I noticed that you can record in black/white, sepia, fluorescent, plus adjust shutter speed and so many other things!

Cons: Should include HDMI cable, considering price. You can get HDMI cables for $5-10.
No other cons that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: This is my first camcorder, so I don't have much to compare to, but the Canon HG10 has so many features, it'll take a while to figure everything out. The user manual is about 120 pages, but I hear that you can also download it off their website if you like.

Make sure you get a mini HDMI --> HDMI if you want to hook it up to your TV, DVR or other external device that uses that connection. I probably would have ordered one with this order, but newegg doesn't seem to carry them.

I bought this in anticipation of our first child (~1 month away). I wanted something that can take nice video, decent stills and had enough features depending on setting, use, etc.
I'm glad I decided to get an HD camera, as it will be somewhat more "future proof". After extensive review on several sites before buying and this seems to be one of the best (if not the best) camcorder you can get in the $1000 and under range.
Ordered Tuesday night, arrived Friday (standard shipping) -- Thanks again Newegg!

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Camera

Pros: high definition, compact, ergonomic, decent battery life, good picture, external microphone connection (3mm), good zoom, easy to use

Cons: Built-in mic picks up everything the operator says. The video format is only supported through a hack in Linux and is very slow to convert. Not only are still pictures not very good quality (as is expected from a video camera) but I had trouble capturing any that weren't blurry.

Other Thoughts: I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of camera settings so I don't tweak things on the camera unless I have to. I didn't feel the need to tweak anything on this camera. You turn it on, what for the hard drive for a few seconds, point, and shoot. It takes great video. I just have to get a faster processor so that I can edit what I've shot so far.

4 out of 5 eggsSome serious drawbacks...

Pros: Compact, sturdy, nice feature set, great zoom, beautiful video.

Cons: Software is barely worth installing -- lots of registrations and hassles. Will only copy video over USB with power adapter connected. Video is non-standard format.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Compact but impressive. I thought the size would compromise the quality but it is superb. This is my first HDD and first HD camcorder. Daytime quality is flawless. Some artifacts but barely. Low light is pretty good. I record house fires and I had one the other night and it was flawless. Nighttime without much lighting is alright. No HD at all. Nice size HDD. Nice ports. I ordered a HDMI cable and waiting on it but using component cable supplied it is amazing. Pretty good settings and manual settings.

Cons: No wind filter. Only on breezy or windy days it is bad but still decent. Menu is kinda annoying and the dial is ok. Takes some time to get used to but it is fine once learned. Battery life is pretty bad so get another battery. I haven't gotten one yet. The viewfinder is pointless...doesn't move up or anything.

Other Thoughts: Format is still very new. I tried to upload a video on YT but didn't work. I havent used the software with it so I don't know what it does but you will have to convert it I believe. It feels solid. Zoom switch is different but I love it. I like it being a toggle and not a knob or something. The light is ok. Nothing great but could live without it. Being under $1000...very good price for a HDD HD camera. $750 is excellent for a name brand camera and being a Canon. I highly recommend this camera to a novice or amateur.

5 out of 5 eggsOh Yeah!

Pros: Very light weight..User friendly...Great optics...fair price. You get what you pay for. This video camera with an Imac and imovie 06 and imovie 08 a perfect match

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Other Thoughts: 10 to 1 Zoom is all you need the digital zoom is worthless just as I knew it would be
