Remember the tricorders on Star Trek? They didn't need any tapes or moving parts to record high resolution sound and video, and now, neither do you! Utilizing an SD/SDHC memory card(optional), this camcorder uses less power, responds faster, and is more shock resistant than either disk or tape systems. (Even so, don't strap it to a soccer ball for those ball's-eye view shots: it ain't THAT shock resistant!)
A 2.07 mega pixel CMOS sensor gives you full 1920 x 1080 High Definition video and beautiful digital stills, aided and abetted by 12X power HD zoom, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, and Instant AutoFocus. Offering both 24p Cinema and 30p Progressive mode, it can record up to three hours on a 8GB SDHC card! A mini HDMI port gives you additional display choices, and the advanced accessory shoe lets you further enhance your capabilities with optional accessories.

Amazing little gadget
- Pros: Image quality is great for such a small little camera, and with a single CMOS chip (not 3 like some others). With a fast SDHC card you'll never have to wait for the camera to write video while filming. 30p mode is great for those of us who hate interlacing; even though film is 24p, this camera's 30p mode still gives everything a film-like feel.
The standard battery supposedly lasts about 1.5 hours, so I opted for the BP-819 that has about double the capacity.
- Cons: There's a bit of purple fringing when the aperture's wide open, so contrasty scenes at night (say, a baseball game) tend to make it most apparent. It's not a big issue, though. The UI needs a little tweaking - deleting a single clip takes too many steps, but maybe this will be cleaned up in a future firmware revision. The remote control is not very strong, so if you want to watch videos on your HDTV (and believe me, you will), you'll probably want to train your universal remote to run things instead. The package doesn't include a mini-HDMI cable, but you can grab one for single digits online.
24p is recorded with a 3:2 pulldown as 60i (probably because many video editing packages can't handle 24p), so you'll have to do an inverse telecine to get native 24p in post-production.
These are mostly small issues to me, though, and they generally take a back seat to how the camera performs while capturing.
- Other Thoughts: I imagine that cameras like this will soon become the standard, so I see this one as a pioneer in its field. It's one of the first (if not the first) to record AVCHD to SDHC cards in full 1920x1080, and I think the usability features mentioned above will disappear as this family of cameras evolves.
The bottom line is that if you want an HD video camera for three digits without playing the waiting game (there will always be something better in the future - don't waste life waiting!), I don't think you can do much better than the HF100 right now.
Superb Camera
- Pros: Very feature rich camera. Amazing digital quality especially considering the convenience of filming onto flash and instantly downloading it onto a computer. The camera is designed to give you the best images regardless of conditions, bright, low-light etc. This camera will get your shot where other cameras fail. Using the Transcend 16 gig flash memory bundled with the transcend USB memory reader all from NewEgg with excellent, reliable results.
- Cons: It is about the highest quality consumer camera available but I think it tops out at consumer quality - it would take a tremendous amount of skill especially in video conversion abilities to take it to the prosumer level. It seems that all images whether 24p or 30p still convert to 60i in the camera.
- Other Thoughts: I found the previous review very helpful in deciding on this camera and I agree with the reviewer that this type of flash memory camera is the future in digital recording. I have not tried to edit any video (.MTS or .M2TS) files yet. A free windows program called 'Media Player Classic' (klmcodec345) has been the best for playing the .mts camera files and once it was installed Windows Media can now play the files with both video and sound. Some people are renaming the .mts files on their computer to .mpg and that is helping software to play the video files. I expect AVCHD to be a common standard with a bunch editing software.

works very well
- Pros: Good video, great weight, and fast.
- Cons: no internal hard drive but the 16GB flash i got works very well. The software that came with it locked up my pc.
- Other Thoughts: This is so much better then my old dvd camcorder, although you need to get an aftermarket program such as sony vegas to import the video, the software that came with it locked up my pc.
Canon HF100
- Pros: Purchased this camcorder to finally step up to HD from my Canon GL2. WOW! Bright and vivid colors really look great. The controls of the camera, as well as the menus are well layed-out. With a 16GB card (from Newegg) I can record over two hours of 1920x1080 HD. The footage imports into Final Cut Pro (log and transfer) with no issues and looks amazing. The only thing I miss is a viewfinder.
- Cons: Purchased my HF100 for a Spring Break trip to Destin, FL. UPS delivered it the day after we left home, so I didn't get to record vacation footage.
hf100
- Pros: Wow, this thing is tiny and sharp. I've used in low light and very satisfied for price/size. Zoom is amazing for such and tiny camera. Joystick is fairly easy and menus were quick to learn. plugged it into my macbook pro and with iLife 08, it was simple to download and edit my videos. Shipped in 2 days with free shipping option. Very satisfied customer!!!!!
- Cons: Does not come in black :(
- Other Thoughts: DO NOT FORGET A MEMORY CARD
