Great first DSLR
- Pros: Nice little DSLR. The image quality is great all the way to IS 800 and ISO 1600 is perfectly usable. I also love the film like grain at ISO 1600 b/w. The kit lens is surprisingly good. Fast autofocus. Overall, the camera is very comfortable and feels pretty solid (big step up from the film Rebel of old). Goes well with canon 50mm f1.8 II.
- Cons: There are things that are slightly annoying. Live view is practically useless. The viewfinder could be bigger, but overall I think it is a solid camera and if you need to upgrade skip the XSi and go straight for D90 which is twice the price but might be worth it.
- Other Thoughts: You'll need a tripod and a case. For whatever you can't find on Newegg B&H is the way to go. There is only one exception to this that I can think of, overstock has a great deal on hoya UV and PL filters. Do get a UV filter (canon or hoya) and leave it on the lens at all time. The 10 dollars you spend on the filer will save your the trouble of buying a new lens. To clean the lens use a blower (Giotto is a good brand). Finally, if you use the flash indoors for the portraits get a flash diffuser (Gary Fong puffer about 20 bux) or just make one out of white film canister. That's about all the wisdom I can share. Enjoy the experience.
Canon EOS Rebel XS
- Pros: Very crisp image quality. Natural colors well preserved. One of the few entry-level DSLR cameras (maybe the only one) with CMOS sensor.
- Cons: When you hold the camera, you may feel that the build quality is not high due to extensive use of plastic (but the performance is great).
- Other Thoughts: Good entry-level DSLR camera with an attractive price. You hardly ever go wrong with Canon.

The revolution is upon us
- Pros: Relatively inexpensive for a DSLR. Incredible image quality. Lightweight. Nice wide angle lens. Viewfinder is easy on the eyes. Great battery life. Flash works great.
- Cons: Lowish MP for DSLR at 10.1. Cheap, yet solid-feeling, all plastic body. Live-view not worth much in practice. So-so in low light with stock lens.
- Other Thoughts: We waited too long to get a DSLR. Always bought higher-end compacts thinking they were good enough, and they were, until we bought this camera. Nothing compares to the large sensor and amazing speed of SLR design. Finally feel like I'm taking film-esque digital images.
Terrific DSLR
- Pros: Huge improvement from point-n-shoot, especially for low-light. Light weight. Smaller file sizes are faster to post-process. Kit lens is very good, IMHO.
You have to be a really accomplished photographer to tell much difference in IQ (image quality) between this entry level DSLR and a MUCH more expensive camera.
If you are dissatisfied with a p/s, I would suggest starting with this camera, and see how well it serves your purposes.
- Cons: Bulky compared to point-n-shoot.
Entry level not meant for advanced/heavy-duty amateur use, like 1000+ pictures per week. Mine developed problems, but only after 30,000+ shutter activations.
If most of your pictures are outdoors, or you use flash indoors, you may not notice that much difference from an advanced point-n-shoot.
Doesn't have video.
- Other Thoughts: Ended up trading for Canon 50D, which has significantly better build quality and intended for heavier duty usage. However, the more I use the 50D, the more impressed I am with the XS image quality. I would speculate that for 95%+ of the pictures I take, there is essentially no difference in IQ between the XS and the 50D.
Great camera for the price!
- Pros: Great price, Cannon Quality, awsome package. I researched a lot of cameras before buying this one. It takes great picture and the battery life is great! 10 megapixel pictures show great quality. I saw this same package advertised 2 weeks after I got this camera for over $700. This is an great deal.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: I love this camera! I take alot of outdoor pictures and this camera has more than met my needs. I read alot about people saying that picture quality wasnt too great but I have not had a problem. This is a great starter camera for those who shoot pitures professionally. I would recommend this camera to anyone. My sister bought the same camera and she love hers as much as I love mine.
