Excellent Camera
- Pros: Excellent color, and once you have acquainted yourself with the menus and joystick it's easy to change modes "on the fly" while using it. Hard drive has a huge amount of storage for the average user. I really like having the option of using either the LCD screen or the viewfinder, especially in bright sun. The zoom rocker switch has a hair-trigger, but you can control rate of zoom by how hard you press. Powerful zoom for close up, but then you get hand-shake (not the camera's fault at all). I used this on vacation all over Europe and am very happy with it.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: You will need a large capacity battery. You can get excellent generics, no need to pay Canon's ridiculous prices. I got a wall-charger, 1400MV battery, and even a car cigar-lighter plug adapter for $37 online. Most of these batteries will not read the capacity on the charge and the camera will give you a warning-just click it off. Use the battery that comes with the camera as extra backup and you will never run dry. This camera, as with all lower cost digitals, will not do well in dim light or when the sun goes down at dusk. However, if you have light sources such as store lights, etc. it does great. I took multiple night shots of the Venice, Italy store fronts at night and they are spectacular. By the way, if you run HDMI, I use Pinnacle 12 and it accepts AVCHD and edits with no problems at all. I must save the videos as files and import them, Pinnacle will not import straight from the camera. No problem. Excellent camera.
Absolutely Fantatic HD Camcorder
- Pros: Absolutely Stunning performance in outdoor as well as well lighted indoor. Video quality is breath taking. Nice controls. Very responsive and focus is extremely fast. Again video quality is crystal clear and I have no words to describe it. You have to see it to believe. Great camcorder for price.
- Cons: Battery Life (Genuine Canon extra battery is a must and its very expensive)
Software that comes with it is garbage.
- Other Thoughts: Canon engineering should work on their battery consumption for this series. Also, they should provide battery with at least 1500 mAh by default with the camcorder. Canon needs to seriously think about the Software they provide with it. It's absolutely junk and of no use.
Nice Camera
- Pros: I purchased this camera based on a macworld.com review. I do a lot of video editing and home movies, but I purchased this camera to shoot a wedding professionally. I haven't fully put it to the test, but initially it does not disappoint. The software that comes with it is useless if you own a Mac, but my Mac recognized it as soon as I plugged it in, and I was able to get movies to iMovie and Final Cut Express easily. Beautiful picture quality.
- Cons: With the limited amount and high expense of Blu-Ray burners out there, you can't get the full benefit of getting true HD by just burning movies onto a DVD. It plays beautifully on a TV (once you purchase a mini HDMI cord). The joystick takes a little getting used to but nothing that's too annoying.
- Other Thoughts: A great camera so far, I would recommend it highly if you are wanting to get an HD camera.
