5 out of 5 eggsNice HD

Pros: Takes good vids and pics with a small form factor.

Cons: Mine was stolen, but I re-purchased the same cam because I liked it so much!

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding for the price, and in general.

Pros: Amazing little camera. The picture quality is outstanding, and the solid state design, with no rolling transfer means I get my shots from take to edit with no loss of quality. I film in the full HD 24 Mbps, and I can't believe the results. The problems with motion recording are non existent for me (probably because I know how to properly set it) and I use the PF24 framerate, which replicates a "film" look quite nice, and gives me that cinematic look I need on my student films. Overall its a 5/5 because it's got the quality I need at a price I can afford, and with practical features, stunning video from a small 37mm filter diameter. Truly amazing.

Cons: It doesn't do well in low light, IF you don't have the settings properly adjusted. If the settings on the camera is well adjusted, and you know how to light your scene, then it does quite well. The two things you have to take care with are the color, which requires proper settings on set, and proper adjustment in post, and the auto focuses. As this is a small inexpensive camera, there is no manual focus, and the auto focus is only as good as an auto focus can get; I definitely can't rack focus in a scene without moving the camera. There are a lot of little tweaks, but most are fixed with proper settings. The software that comes with it is useless, but I use Adobe Premier at home, and AVID at school, so no big deal.

Other Thoughts: The size of this camera is surprisingly not a hindrance for me, but of great value. I use two of these in a rig I developed and shoot Stereoscopic 3D. The 3D, while not something the average consumer would be looking for, is actually great quality. Shot properly I have some stuff that rivals some of the 3D features in theaters, definitely better 3D than films that were not shot but converted to 3D. If I can acquire a program to burn my two angles together on a blu-ray for viewing on a 3D ready HDTV, I'll be golden. The auto focus does hinder my capabilities for 3D but not too much.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Camera

Pros: Can't beat the price for this HD Cam. I've taken a bunch of footage with it and have been very happy with it. I could get all long winded, but bottom line is for the price, you will not get a better cam.

Cons: Only wish it had a higer res still cam, but again keeping the price in mind it's not really a con.

5 out of 5 eggsGet this camera

Pros: -Incredible video for the price. I am taking video editing in college and the other cameras that the class uses just can't even compete with the quality.
-Surprisingly great sound out of the stock microphone. I would suggest getting an aftermarket condenser microphone, as it greatly improves the sound.
-Small and lightweight.

Cons: -Battery life isn't the best, but a good third party battery can be purchased on many sites. Just search the model. I got two for 40$ and they work fine.
-The software is garbage but you don't need it. Get VLC media player or Windows Media Player Classic for playing videos (both free). Also get a good encoding program, just search for a media encoder and you will find a bunch of free ones. This will greatly reduce the file sizes and keep a lot of the quality at the same time. Adobe Contribute or Nero Vision are great and simple for creating DVD's of the videos as well.

Other Thoughts: This is a great camera. It is well worth the money. You just need a couple of things (mentioned above), and you will be filled with joy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HD Camera

Pros: 1. Great crisp colors with tons of options for adjustments
2. Very light weight
3. Fast moving motion is great when used with right software
4. Very good low light capture with settings adjustments
5. Best HD camera you will find for $550

Cons: 1. Battery life is on the short side
2. Too many compartments for inputs and outputs
3. Only takes 3mp still images
4. Bundled software is horrible!
5. I wish the LCD was a touch screen

Other Thoughts: The bundled software is the worst part of this camera. To play large AVCHD files correctly, you need to install a 3rd party software on mid to low range PC's or you will notice, alot of blurring and lag. Mirillis is a free HD content player and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT Camera, AVERAGE Software

Pros: Easy to use (manual settings are easy to understand), lightweight, not as expensive as the others out there.
Takes absolutely stunning HD video (especially with the vivid color setting which we used while on Safari).
The 3-second pre-record is AWESOME. Used it on safari and during a live action dolphin show and caught everything!
AVCHD format for DVD disks is awesome as you get full HD that will play on most Blue Ray players.

Cons: The software that this camera comes with is a bit of a headache to work with.

Other Thoughts: The optical stabilizer is average out there is software that can correct for that.
You will need a spare battery and I recommend a separate battery charger (search for best pricing) so that you can be charging both batteries at the same time or charge one while you are out with the other.
The video is a beast to edit using the provided software ESPECIALLY if you don't have a computer powerful enough to handle HD video (count the cost of a possible PC upgrade and some semi-professional software to work with).
As stated in the documentation, when it comes to DVDs, you can only burn to DVD-R or -RW (not +R or +RW).
I'd also recommend getting plenty of SD cards (again search for best pricing).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat HD camera!

Pros: Great outdoor, lightweight, easy to setup and use, takes great pictures, great color, compact size!

Cons: Battery life, flash memory can sometimes be hard to find cheap (recording in HD, it chews through memory FAST), low light recording (indoors with table lamps) is not very good.

Other Thoughts: This is my first camcorder I ever bought, it was over my price range, but for the money this camera will do everything I was looking for. It sets up fast, the menus are easy to use, and the quality is GREAT...way better than anything I saw at 550$ and lower. I never loaded the software it came with, using pinacle studio. You can drag and drop files from the camera instead of having to use software. The battery life is about 70 minutes. Shorter if you constantly are turning it on and off. I would suggest anyone on a budget for an HD camera to buy this!

3 out of 5 eggsNice Camcorder, Little Disappointed

Pros: Great ergos and feels great in my hand, nice strap, solid state only(less parts), Takes great video in good/great lighting, OIS is nice, I like the joy stick that canon uses for UI accessing

Cons: Terrible low light recording. No external battery charger, stock battery dies quickly. No mini HDMI cable. Bundled software is basically useless.

Other Thoughts: With a bit of tinkering indoor low light situation can become acceptable I guess. I'm thinking about returning it and looking(or waiting) for a better low light option. I think though I may be past my initial date of purchase for a return because my first HF200 had to be returned due to a hair stuck in the lens. I'm not sure if newegg considers that date I received the new one as a new date of purchase.

Anyways, the Canon 7D looks great in low light but it's also $2000 :/
