Canon’s PowerShot SD780 combines a broad feature set into a pocket-sized package to capture the world around you. The cutting-edge 12.1 megapixels of imaging power gives you the ability to create photos with incredible quality and clarity. Use the 3x optical zoom to get closer to your subject and count on optical image stabilization to ensure sharp images even when you’re following the action. The 2.5-inch PureColor II LCD lets you see your image as the camera sees it – enabling you to catch the perfect moment.
Canon’s exclusive DIGIC 4 image processor takes most of the guesswork out of getting a good picture. It offers faster, more accurate noise reduction at higher ISO speeds, and incorporates iSAPS technology to improve image focus and color balance. With the SmartAUTO intelligent shooting module, the SD780 IS selects the proper settings for your photos based on the 18 predefined shooting situations, for the perfect shot! The New Face Self-Timer lets you get into the picture with the camera waiting until it recognizes an additional face before taking the shot.
Red-eye can be eliminated automatically or manually within the camera. Additional settings let you take control of the entire picture-taking process with 20 shooting modes. Printing straightly with the camera by selecting SELPHY and PIXMA photo printers. Life happens – capture it with the PowerShot SD780 IS.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Needed something to cover the moments when I got caught without my bulky DSLR. This fit the bill perfectly for the features and discounted price. Sharp images, and added HDMI video aspect rocks. Been ordering from Newegg for years and service is great as always.
Cons: Working in auto mode under low lighting, it takes a second or two lag in order to process settings so you might miss your "normal" speed live action shot. Widescreen is a gimicky crop off the top. Combined, these take one egg off.
Other Thoughts: Did my research and the Canon SD990 has more res. but the noise level in that model is also getting some neg. reviews so the extra cost was not really worth the effects of the 2 extra megapixels. The SD780 is highly portable and gets lost easily in my pocket - just what I wanted in a point and shoot.

Average Camera

Pros: It takes decent pictures and takes 720p video. The feature I love most is its extremely fast start up time, but its small size is a very close second.
The face detection self timer is nice but sometimes takes forever to take the picture and keeps flashing so I wonder if it has taken the picture or not. I also like the custom timer up to 30 secs and can take up to 10 pictures. Battery life is great, went on vacation (7 days) and took hundreds of pics, didn't have to charge it at all and had battery left over when I got back.
Cons: Pictures are not always as crisp as I would like, but it is not a SLR camera. The the viewfinder window is in the middle of the camera which makes it nearly impossible to hold up to your eye unless you don't have a nose. But the LCD viewer works fine

Tiny, Good for small hands

Pros: A very decent camera with the whole host of improvements made to other Canon models in the last year or so, but at an entry price. One we've found particularly useful (that hasn't been as useful on past models) is the "Kids and Pets" mode. Amazing shutter speed and accurate light capturing have allowed us to catch action shots of the puppy and child that we never thought possible. Amazing clarity!
Tiny! To give you a real idea, think of an Altoids tin. In fact, there's a modder out there who made a padded case for it out of an Altoid tin, so it's quite small.
Cons: As others have noted, the video (even at 720p) is just average. Where still photos shine even with indoor lighting, videos particularly suffer. In low or moderate lighting, the 720p is overshadowed by a very high degree of "grainyness" or noise. It suffices for what we need, especially given it's use as a backup to our Vixia HF (our real video camera).
The tiny size is a plus for my wife, but almost makes for a bit of a burden when I try to use it. I feel a bit like a grown-up riding a child's tricycle when I take a picture. :)
Other Thoughts: Stunning photos, tiny size, very attractive camera (prettier even than the images on Newegg can show), average video.

Pros: Small, did I say Small. Great pictures on Auto. The Video is incredible. The battery life is good. Very easy to operate with every feature you could want on a "very small" camera. Fits in your shirt pocket.
Cons: The sound on the Video could be better but is adequate.
Other Thoughts: I bought this camera for my wife and she has very limited (none) experience with digital cameras. With this camera on Auto she takes pictures like a pro. I could not have bought her a camera that would have made her any happier. This is a perfect camera for vacations and outdoor activities as it takes up very little space in your purse for pocket yet is as good as a larger camera.

Pros: Pictures are great quality. A simple search for sd780 under google images will give you plenty of examples. Easy to use.
Cons: 720p video is nothing spectacular at all. You can get clips from youtube for examples.
Other Thoughts: 5/5 due to buying for a camera, not for video recording. My wife nor I are any kind of professional photographers. We just want something that will take good pictures of the kids and this does the job very well. Paired with the a-data class 6 16gb sdcard
