Great Intermediate DSLR

white Reviewed By: pugboy9 on 12/7/2009
Rating + 5
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: I have become fascinated with this camera and it's abilities. Great ISO, up to 12,800 (you just need to know how to turn it on) good IS with kit lens and the 55-250 starter lens that also came with the deal. Flash compensation is very useful indoors and outside. I don't mind the 20FPS of the 1080P it's not so bad, the 30FPS for the 720P is however the best in its class. Picture sizes are great, as expected with a 15.1 MP camera, but the quality of the photos are really amazing, this was something I was a little concerned about seeing as how the resolution was so darn huge.

Camera body is light weight considering the fact that other dslr's in it's class are almost a pound heavier. The body construction is not bad; I am pleased that canon did add a rubberized grip. This camera isn't weather sealed, but for the price that shouldn't come as a surprise, even the kit lens, as cheap as it is, works better and has a better feel than the previous lens on the XTi model.
Cons: What kind of review would this be without the harsher truth? This camera shouldn't be considered for those who pride themselves as being professional photographers. But those people already know this.

The features in this little guy just don't stand up to let's say the 50D or the 7D, shutter speeds reach 1/4000 of a second, but this is mediocre compared to its bigger brothers. The ISO, as good as I find it, is nowhere near the super high-end camera spectrum.

The HD video was never an issue for me, I plan on using the slower 1080P for time elapses and maybe slower moving action. IF one really needs to have the full capabilities of HD then perhaps the extra $1000 would be used wisely on the 7D.

This camera from what I have seen performs well at night, but I do have trouble even on a tri pod with getting distant night landscape shots to come out sharp, this could be due to my inexperience as an armature photographer, but I feel that I might not be too far from the truth on this.
Other Thoughts: I researched this camera and all the other ones in the $800 to $1500 price range for about three months. I did all the research on the different features and modes and finally decided that having some 1080P video options and full 720P video was better than the Nikon alternative at 24FPS 720P only. Oddly enough it was the 1080P that everyone here seems to hate vehemently that was the real deal breaker for me, and you know, that's just fine by me.

I never used the automatic modes, and strangely enough I am a relative noob to this facet. I started off in the semi auto mode of P and then explored Av and Tv modes for various applications, then one day decided to check out the Manual mode and discovered that I was ready for it. I was pleased to see that working with this camera was easier than I had initially expected. Now I run through the controls and menu items with ease, and it's amusing when I hand over the "Rebel" to an unsuspecting family member. Great buy!! 100% satisfied!!

Old SLR user

Pros: Excellent colors in moderate to low lighting outdoors and indoors. Good lenses produce excellent sharpness and available light photos. I have taken photos along side of pros and have had my photos liked over the pros work. I've been using SLR's since 1973 -- these DSLR's are nice but you have to work them to get good photos. Practice practice practice. Take lots of photos, you will be lucky if one in seven is worth keeping.
Cons: I have had problems with red and/or cyan halos above and below bright objects in strong sunlight outdoor photos. In strong sunlight I have to stop down 1 full stop to prevent washout. This camera will take over a year to learn all the features and the interactions they have with each other. I have gotten myself in trouble forgetting to clear changes from one shoot to the next.
Other Thoughts: I upgraded from an XSi and was able to transfer my accessories over to the T1i. The 'Camera Armor' body armor is nice on this T1i, (with modifications) it adds width and depth to the body and gives a nice feel to the hand. I use an EF 28mm f/1.8 USM for walk around photos, and a EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM for close-up photos and distance work. Kit glass is soft in focus. Buy some good glass - you will like it. (Non EF-S glass requires a 1.6 multiplier to equate MM on this camera body.)

Awesome Camera for the Price

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Well, after weeks of research and reading reviews after reviews on cameras and lens, I chose this camera. It was between The Rebel T1i, 50D, or the Nikon D90. I wanted a good beginner's DSLR that didn't break the bank. The menu is very fast and easy to navigate. I'm a guy who likes to pick up something and just mess with it so I haven't even opened up the manual yet. After reading all the reviews on it, I was able to pick it up and start taking pictures with it with no major problems. It has a FULL AUTO mode for people who still can't get over the point and shoot cameras. It has many other auto modes too like Portrait, Landscape, and Night. If you like messing with RAW images, this camera will produce high quality RAW along with Large JPEGs. I was never a good picture taker, even with the point and shoots, but with this camera, pictures look like they came right out of a magazine or studio. Many people say to invest in lens and not body, although I really did like the GPS on the D90.
Cons: You gotta know about Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. I read up on them quite a bit, but some of my pictures are still really bad. The included 18-55mm lens isn't that good. It's not good for indoor pictures because it has a slower lens and the build quality feels cheap, but all Canon's low end lens are built this way. I guess you can say that it only uses SD and SDHC cards. Compact flash would have been nice. A class 6 is really recommended, but I was able to get by with a class 4 for a while. I now have a class 10 16GB card. For video, it only has Mono Sound, but then again, I'm really not using the video mode that much.
Other Thoughts: I picked up 2 additional starter lens, the EF 50mm F/1.8 II and the EF-S 55-250mm IS lens. I highly recommend the EF 50mm 1.8 lens. It is a very fast lens and takes great indoor pictures. It is also very cheap (in price and build), but the quality of your pictures will look like a million bucks. There are 2 other versions of the 50mm, the 1.4 is the mid-range lens and the 1.2 is the Pro (luxury) lens (has the red ring). I think for what I do, these lens should be good. If I decide to take photography up a notch and decide to start making money with it, then I'll look into buying better quality stuff. My macro pictures look pretty darn good too. They look like I stole them from Google Image search or a magazine. Also the battery grip from the XSi will fit this thing with no problem, because they both have similar bodies. I also recommend getting the SpeedLite 270EX with a diffuser. It's a good starter flash that will make your portraits look very good.

Pros: Takes great photos, rugged enough. Bought with combo telephoto lens for decent price.
Cons: Not for professionals, but certainly capable of great shots for the home user.
Other Thoughts: 1080p recording is only at 20fps whereas 720p is at the standard 30fps, just something to consider.

Pros: you can read the Pros in its advertisement. That is what advertisement is for anyways.
Cons: sadly it only shoots 1080 at 20fps, but u should know that by now the big issue with this camera is you need to buy yourself a nice SDHC card because my 8gb barely cuts it. i fill that up fast. the video takes up a lot so prepare to use up another 100 on just a SDHC card that is large enough 32gb for example.
Other Thoughts: people stated that the camera took them a while to learn....yes if your new to photography and or movie making i can understand that...but it was extremely simple for me and i have never studied photography
