SLR-Like Just Like the Title Says

white Reviewed By: MBairman on 9/24/2009
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: The camera is easy enough to use in AUTO mode and powerful enough for most photographers to utilize the MANUAL mode. The images are crisp, clear, and easy to manipulate. This version even has "dummy proof" explanations in the menu to help novice photographers understand the camera. The lens is awesome and image stabilization is ridiculously helpful for folks without a tripod.

The camera, like most digital cameras, struggles in low light situations. HOWEVER, by making adjustments to ISO and shutter speed, awesome results can be achieved. This won't occur in the manual mode since this camera is much more than a point and shoot model.

I have owned every version of this camera, all the way back to the S1IS, and Canon keeps making improvements to this model every year. This camera is no exception. With the addition of 720p video and a mini-HDMI connection, this camera puts you on the verge of SLR. Based on these factors, I would buy this camera again in a blink of an eye.
Cons: I CANNOT BELIEVE that Canon did not add a tether to the lens cap. If you read the rants on Newegg concerning this in the SX10IS, I was certain that this would be addressed. It is ridiculously disappointing and totally unacceptable not to include it in this model. That fact alone keeps it from receiving five eggs.

Secondly, while RAW would be awesome, the reality is that the camera is meant for that kind of high level photography. HOWEVER, the choice to continue using MOV format is another serious disappointment. Sure, file sizes are reduced, but sorry, so is the video quality. The video on this camera make look good, but the format is very Windows unfriendly, and from my personal perspective, lacks fluidity and the sharpness of even the S5IS, my favorite version of this camera.

Finally, since Canon clearly raised the price on the camera with this version, most likely to cover their costs of their lens error repairs, they should have included the mini-HDMI cable.
Other Thoughts: The good far outweighs the bad with this camera. Canon, to their benefit, has been very good about dealing with the lens error issues of their cameras, as long as they're under warranty. The only question you need to ask with this camera is whether or not you're willing to sink another $150-$200 for a true SLR. If you're savvy in the world of photography, I would say "yes." However, I teach a digital photography course at a high school, and we live and die with these cameras. They're really very rugged and have just enough features/capabilities to give my students a solid foundation in digital photography.

Great Camera

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: 20X Optical zoom, 720p Stereo Sound Video, Great Color reproduction, viewfinder, Easy navigation of setup options, Great Value for price.
Cons: No lens cap strap, Too long of a screen pause between shots in continuous shoot mode.
Other Thoughts: The sx20 takes amazing photos with great color reproduction with lots of great features. I field tested the sx20 at the local Zoo and was able to utilize it in low light, florescent light, and natural light, Using the preset scenes night scenery, indoor, and foliage respectively produced impressive results. I had the most trouble with very low light settings however I did not have a tripod so the results were anticipated. The button for adjusting exposure is a tad small but after about 20 minutes of use I was able to utilize it without removing my eye from the view finder. The camera has a very sturdy feel and can be gripping solidly by your hands. although this is technically a point and shoot, it feels about as nice as you can get without actually having an SLR. The only thing I found troublesome (and there may be a setting to change it) is that when you shoot in continuous mode the screen freezes for a tad too long and it makes it hard to track moving bojects while shooting.

Excellent value, great camera .... but ......

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I have owned three of the previous models in the S series, and in many respects, they just keep getting better. The pictures at 20x optical have less fringing than previous models at 12x and 10x. The fringing is barely noticable, even at very high zoom levels when computer editing.

The low light focusing has also improved greatly. It is faster and more accurate, but there is still room for improvement. Overall, It would be difficult to find a better camera in this class. I do a lot of wildlife photograpy, and the 20x optical, and muck quicker focusing capability, has made a difference in taking difficult shots like birds in flight against gray skies.

This camera is capable of much more than other cameras in this class because of a "chdk" software addon that can be added to your SD card. See "Other thoughts:". The addon does NOT change the firmware, but greatly increases the capabilities of the camera.
Cons: I have never experienced the dreaded "E18 lens error" on any of my S series cameras, but only because I ALWAYS kept a Lensmate aluminum adapter with a UV filter or polarizer attached to the cameras. This completely protected the lens barrel from being touched or bumped. (Google: "canon lens error").

The SX10 and SX20 have eliminated the mount for this type of adapter, and the inherent protection that it provided. A HUGH STEP BACKWARDS in my opinion.

Thanks to a special lensmate adaptor, I can still attach filters, but now they must be attached to the end of the lens barrel itself, which adds further capability to cause lens error issues. The addition of the Adaptor also allows you to use a tethered lens cap, but you must be careful not to extend the lens with the cap in place, which is probably why Canon does not supply a tether on their own cap in the first place. The tethered lens caps were attached to the adapters in my previous models, and could not bind the lens.
Other Thoughts: I am extremely pleased with the quality of my photos from this camera. In many respects, it is much better for spontaneous wildlife photography than my SLR's are. This camera combines the lighter weight of a point and shoot, with greater capabilities than many SLR's for taking shots along the trail when hiking. I get "photos of opportunity" with this camera that I would never get with my SLR's

The "chdk" software addon is almost completed, and will be a big plus for this camera. (Google "chdk", and go to the wiki) I used "chdk" on my S3 and S5, and found it very useful.

I STILL miss the remote capability that I had on my S1IS. Why did they drop this feature?

OVERALL: Took an egg away for the loss of the barrel adapter ... BUT, you would be hard pressed to find a better camera for this type of photography. Excellent quality photos, and the movie mode is very good.

The change to "MOV" format for movies was a poor decision. Canon should restore the AVI or Mpeg format.

In a Haze

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Great HD video with stereo sound. Intuitive menus (for the most part). Direct USB interface.

Uses AA batteries. Some people consider that a con. But what happens if you're in some remote location and you use up all the battery power you have? Any corner store will have AA's. Not any corner store is going to have proprietary camera batteries. If you put up with the minor inconvenience of using the view finder instead of the LCD screen, you can get PLENTY of life out of a normal set of AA batteries.
Cons: Mediocre (at best) picture quality. I sure would like to talk to the other reviewers who talk about crisp picture quality. I have taken hundreds of pictures over a wide range of subject matter and camera settings. I have yet to find a single picture that I did not feel compelled to use photo editing software to enhance the picture -- whether the original was overexposed, blurry, noisy, or whatever. Also, Canon got cheap and didn't print the full manual. A PDF is not very useful in the field! For $370, I expect to have a manual.
Other Thoughts: I bought this camera to replace my 7-year-old Kodak DX7590. You'd think 7 years later and for $100 more, the Canon would offer a better camera. But this Canon is terrible compared to the quality I got out of my old Kodak (except for the video). Unfortunately, I've looked at reviews for competing products from Nikon, Sony, Kodak, Fujifilm, and Pentax. NONE of them have rave reviews. For $400, I think that's just SHAMEFUL. I guess the camera market must be doing OK even in this economy if they can charge so much money for such mediocre products.
